Joel Schmidt: Curiosity Without Compromise
By Caitlyn Stair, Diamond Certified Research Reporter
Joel Schmidt has always been driven by curiosity. Never satisfied with surface-level answers, he’s constantly asking questions and looking for the facts. That same mindset guides his work as he helps homeowners make smarter, more informed decisions about their insulation.
Joel’s fascination with insulation started early in life. As a middle schooler, he noticed the size of his family’s heating bills and suggested adding insulation to improve efficiency. Not long after, a crew arrived to insulate the house. “The results were immediate,” he recalls. “Suddenly, my room was the same temperature as every other room in the house!”
Joel’s curiosity only deepened from there. “I learned the physics of hot air and how a hot air balloon works,” he explains. “That’s how I figured out that a home’s attic is actually more important than its walls in terms of heat retention.” Over time, that habit of digging into how things work evolved into a professional strength that he now uses to solve his clients’ home comfort problems.
After years working alongside insulation professionals in the general contracting industry, Joel eventually stepped into insulation estimating and found that the transition came naturally. “I’d already been around the work for years, so I understood how insulation actually performed in homes,” he says. “When the opportunity came up, it just made sense. It was really just taking what I already knew and applying it in a more direct way.”
Today, as a field estimator at Bay Valley Insulation, Joel focuses on diagnosing his clients’ issues and explaining what’s happening inside their homes in simple, practical terms. Rather than pushing a single solution, he lays out multiple options and gives the reasoning behind each one. “I don’t believe in ‘one size fits all’ answers,” he affirms. “Every house tells a different story, so I try to show people what’s actually going on in theirs.”
Originally from Northern Wisconsin, Joel moved to Illinois before settling in the Bay Area in 2001, where he quickly embraced the warmer climate. “I grew up dealing with real winters, so coming here was a big change,” he reflects. “I don’t miss scraping ice off of windshields or bundling up just to go outside. Now I can be in my garden year-round, and I still appreciate that every day.”
For Joel, the most rewarding part of his job is the long-term impact he leaves behind on each project. “I like making differences that are permanent,” he offers. “Ultimately, the changes I make to a home will outlive both myself and the customer.”
Ask Me Anything!

A: Black bear. It’s tough, dry and gamey, and it has to be cooked carefully to make sure there’s no risk of disease or parasites. In my opinion, it’s not really worth it.
Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: The Fourth of July.
Q: Who’s your favorite superhero?
A: Ryan Reynolds’ version of Deadpool. He’s funny, a little chaotic and constantly getting himself into trouble.

A: An early bird. I like seeing the sun come up.
Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The Green Bay Packers and whoever is playing against the Chicago Bears.
