Armando Montalvo: Building With Purpose
By Julie Deacon, Diamond Certified Research Writer
For Armando Montalvo, owner of MRM Construction, a career in remodeling was shaped early through family influence and hands-on experience. “I’ve been surrounded by the trades for as long as I can remember,” he says. “My uncles are all involved in different areas of construction, so I was fortunate to learn from them at an early age. By the time I was 15, I was already working with one of my uncles who’s a general contractor, and that experience set the foundation for everything that followed.”
After high school, Armando continued building experience through fieldwork in construction and restoration, where he began developing his core skill set in carpentry while remaining exposed to multiple disciplines. “I joined a construction company that specialized in fire restoration,” he recalls. “I started out in a labor position, but over time I worked my way into carpentry and broader construction responsibilities. It gave me a well-rounded understanding of how different trades come together on a remodeling project.”
While the technical side of the work became second nature, what stood out most for Armando was the impact construction had on his clients’ lives. “I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating something new, but what really resonates with me is the ability to resolve issues that genuinely affect people’s homes and routines,” he says. “For example, I recently worked on a glass door that had failing hinges, and once I repaired it, the client described it as an early Christmas gift. Moments like that are incredibly rewarding because you see the immediate difference you’ve made.”
That sense of purpose is closely tied to family, which plays a central role in both Armando’s motivation and the structure of his business. “I have three children and they’re truly the foundation of everything I do,” he says. “Even the company name reflects them, as it’s built from their initials. I wanted them to be part of what I’m building because they’re the reason behind it.”
Armando has spent his entire life in and around San Francisco and the East Bay, an environment he values for its diversity, energy and variation. “You can walk a few blocks in San Francisco and feel like you’re in a completely different world, and within a short drive you’re in a different city altogether,” he details. “That variety keeps things interesting.”
Outside of work, Armando enjoys spending time with his family in active, nature-based settings. “Whether it’s hunting, camping with my kids, riding motorcycles or working on my vehicles, I enjoy anything that keeps me active and outside,” he says. “A lot of that comes from growing up around sports and hands-on environments.”
When reflecting on his guiding philosophy, Armando emphasizes effort, accountability and personal standards rather than external validation. “At the end of the day, what matters most is giving your absolute best in everything you do,” he offers. “You may not satisfy everyone, but if you can say you committed fully and left nothing undone, you can stand behind your work with confidence.”
Ask Me Anything!
Q: If you could time-travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I would go back to the late ’80s or early ’90s. It seems like a period defined by strong family culture and a simpler pace of life that I would enjoy experiencing.
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: We have two dogs, Zeus and Zena. They’re part of the family.
Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: House of Prime Rib in San Francisco.
Q: What were you most known for in high school?
A: Playing football. I was an offensive lineman. I had a reputation for being tough on the field, but outside of that, I was one of the nicest people in the school.
Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
A: My dad gave me my grandfather’s watch on my wedding day. I don’t really wear it because I’m afraid it’s going to get damaged, but it’s something I cherish.
