Adrian Zavala: The Value of Understanding

For Adrian Zavala, an HVAC service call isn’t finished when the repair is complete—it’s finished when the homeowner understands exactly what was done and why. He believes knowledge builds trust, so every visit is an opportunity to leave the customer feeling confident and comfortable.

Adrian’s path into the HVAC industry began in 2021 after he decided it was time for a career change. While working as a property manager at a storage facility, he started exploring the skilled trades and was drawn to HVAC because of its variety and problem-solving opportunities. When he came across Bell Brothers Plumbing Heating and Air’s paid training program, he knew he had found the opportunity he was looking for.

Today, as a technician for Bell Brothers, Adrian helps homeowners throughout the Sacramento region restore comfort to their homes. While fixing heating and cooling systems is a major part of his job, he says keeping customers informed is just as important. “I always treat every client like it’s the first time they’re learning about their HVAC system,” he explains. “By the end of the service call, I want them to understand how their system works and why I’m recommending certain things.”

Adrian believes education is one of the most effective ways to build trust. Instead of relying on technical jargon, he uses everyday comparisons and relatable analogies—such as comparing refrigerant to the oil circulating through a car’s engine—to explain complex mechanical issues. “If a homeowner can explain what I told them to their neighbor and that person understands it, I’ve done my job,” he says. “People deserve to know the full story before making a decision.”

Adrian especially enjoys helping families during Sacramento’s hot summers, when restoring a home’s air conditioning can make an immediate difference in their comfort. “I love the satisfaction of leaving a service call knowing I solved a problem and made someone’s day better,” he says. “Seeing a homeowner happy when everything is working again is my favorite part of the job.”

Originally from Sonoma County, Adrian has called the Sacramento area home since 2020. He says he loves Sacramento for its balance of big-city amenities and small-town character, as well as its diverse and welcoming community. Outside of work, he enjoys camping, hiking and backpacking; attending concerts; and spending time with his Aussiedoodle, Delta.

When it comes to a guiding philosophy, Adrian espouses the importance of balance. “It’s easy to get tunnel vision and flood yourself with work, but it’s also important to take care of yourself and have those breaks,” he offers. “It’s all about finding a balance that works for you.”

Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: “Cars.”

Q: If you could immediately travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Hawaii. I’ve never been there and spending time on the beach sounds pretty nice.

Q: What’s your favorite type of music?
A: I listen to a little bit of everything, but I especially enjoy house music and EDM. Chris Lake and Prospa are two of my favorite artists right now.

Q: Would you ever skydive?
A: I already have. I’m in an airborne unit with the Army Reserve and I’ve completed 11 jumps—nine from airplanes and two from helicopters.
