When it comes to a successful paint job, preparation is just as important as the painting itself. Anyone can apply paint, but if the surface isn’t properly repaired and cleaned first, the finished product may not look its best or hold up over time. Here are two things to focus on:
Prepare the surface. For drywall repairs, start by patching, taping and applying joint compound as needed. Once the compound is dry, sand the area smooth and remove all dust before applying primer and two coats of paint. Skipping any of these steps can leave you with visible imperfections, uneven coverage or a finish that doesn’t last.
Protect the surrounding space. Before work begins, furniture, artwork, and sentimental belongings should be moved or securely covered to protect them from dust and paint. Floors, walkways and stairs should also be covered with protective paper or another durable material, even if they aren’t being painted. Small rocks, drywall debris and loose nails can easily scratch your floors as you move through the house.
