Changing your HVAC filter might seem like a small chore, but it plays a big role in keeping your home comfortable and your system running smoothly. Your HVAC filter is the first (and often only) line of defense against dust, pollen and debris circulating through your air. Located in the return vent, the filter traps contaminants before they reach the inner workings of your system. Yet despite how simple it is to replace, many homeowners forget or delay this important task. An old filter can become clogged over time, restricting airflow and allowing particles to bypass it entirely. When that happens, your HVAC system’s evaporator coil becomes the backup filter. Unfortunately, this coil isn’t designed to trap debris, so buildup can lead to reduced airflow, uneven heating and cooling, and a noticeable drop in system efficiency. If left unchecked, this can shorten the lifespan of your system and lead to expensive repairs. To keep your HVAC system operating efficiently, try to replace the filter every 90 days (if you have pets or allergies, consider doing it more frequently). If it has been more than six months, it’s definitely time for a change. A clean filter helps your system breathe, which means better comfort, lower energy bills and fewer maintenance headaches down the road.
