How to Vacuum Stairs

Vacuuming stairs can be challenging if you don’t take the right approach. Here are three tips that will help you thoroughly clean your stairs, whether they’re carpeted or bare:

Use the right vacuum. Opt for a cordless or lightweight vacuum if possible, as these are easier to maneuver on stairs. Start at the top of the staircase and work your way down. This method ensures any dirt or debris that falls during the process will be caught on the lower steps.

Utilize your vacuum’s attachments. Begin with the crevice tool to remove dirt from the corners and edges of the stairs. Follow with the brush attachment to loosen debris. Finally, use the hose to vacuum the remaining surfaces for a deep clean. Don’t forget to clean the risers (the vertical parts of the stairs) for a complete job.

Tackle excessive dirt and pet hair. For stairs with significant pet hair or soil buildup, sweep the steps first or use a squeegee to lift the hair. This prep work helps your vacuum perform better and reduces the time it takes to clean stubborn debris.
