How to Ensure a Smooth Remodel

With so many moving parts, it’s easy for things to go off track with a remodeling project if you’re not adequately prepared. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take before and during your project to help it go as smoothly as possible.

Plan ahead and secure materials early. One of the most common causes of project delays is waiting on materials. Before your remodel begins, make sure all necessary items (cabinets, fixtures, flooring, etc.) are delivered and stored onsite. This will prevent costly interruptions and allow the crew to move forward without hesitation.

Stick to a detailed schedule. A remodeling project without a defined timeline is a recipe for disaster. Work with your contractor to create a daily or weekly schedule that outlines what’s happening and when. This keeps the project moving forward and makes it easier to coordinate with subcontractors, deliveries, and inspections.

Perform pre-construction inspections. Before knocking down walls or moving pipes, it’s essential to know what you’re working with. Structural, electrical and plumbing inspections can reveal hidden issues that may otherwise stall the project. Accounting for these potential surprises ahead of time ensures they’re dealt with efficiently and safely.

Choose a trustworthy contractor. Remodeling means inviting someone into your home, so trust is key. Look for a contractor who listens, communicates clearly and is willing to hold regular onsite meetings. A quality contractor will keep you in the loop, help you navigate challenges and keep your best interests in mind throughout the process.
