Deciphering Care Labels and the Future of Garment Labeling

The symbols were so small that they were difficult to read, and when I did see them, I didn’t know what they meant. Fortunately, I found a symbols guide and learned that my blouse was to be hand-washed, not bleached or tumbled dry, and a cool iron was recommended.</p> <p>Did you know that care labeling regulations haven’t been updated since the 1960s? It’s predicted that today’s care labels are likely to disappear in the near future, and for good reason. Clothing manufacturers are pitching the idea of using electronic labeling—QR codes or links printed or embedded into fabrics that could provide even more care information than they do right now.</p> <p>The industry favors such changes because they say the current labels are wasteful, their size limits the amount of consumer information and the labels themselves can be scratchy. I’ve had to remove some that are both scratchy and annoying. A different kind of labeling would allow manufacturers to easily update care instructions.
