Alan Kaiser: Building Fulfillment

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ST. HELENA — While many contractors cite a particular aspect that initially drew them to the building trade, for Alan Kaiser, there were a number of things that appealed to his young disposition. “While I was in college, I started working for my cousin, who was a very experienced builder,” he relates. “I found construction to be fulfilling on many levels, from working outside to the technical aspects involved, not to mention the simple satisfaction of standing back at the end of the day and seeing the results of my work.” Since founding Kaiser Construction Inc. in 2000, Alan has continued to find fulfillment in the versatile nature of his work.

While he still lives in the same county where he was born, Alan’s is not a tale of small-town stasis, as he spent the bulk of his young life abroad. “My dad worked for the Navy, so we moved around a lot when I was a kid,” he explains. “I actually lived in Central America for a number of years. However, no matter where we ended up, we always returned to Napa County.” Having established his local roots for good, Alan now resides in St. Helena, where he says he appreciates the town’s unique character. “It’s a very active, thriving community, so there’s always a lot going on, but it’s also managed to retain its small town feel. There aren’t a lot of places left in California like it.”

In addition to being a business owner, Alan owns a sprint car racing team, to which he devotes much of his time outside of work. “I’ve been doing automobile racing all my life, and it continues to be a passion of mine,” he says. “We’ve had some topnotch guys drive for our team, and we’ve actually won a lot of races, so it’s been a fun ride.” When he’s not at the race track, Alan enjoys spending time with his fiancée, Diana, and his soon-to-be stepchildren, James and Amanda.

In his life and career, Alan espouses the currency of the age-old golden rule. “I strive to treat others how I would like to be treated,” he affirms. “In addition to my own personal values, I think it’s true that what goes around comes around, which is why I make it a priority to deal fairly and honestly with everyone I meet.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Alan says he’d take a vacation before returning to tackle a long-deferred home improvement project. “I think the first thing I’d do is take my family on a trip to Hawaii. Afterward, I’d get started on a project I’ve been planning for a while: building another house on my property.”

Hung Tu: Building a New Livelihood

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — When Hung Tu agreed to help his sister build her new house, he didn’t realize he’d also be building a new livelihood for himself. “My sister hired a contractor to build a house, but after problems arose, she asked if I could help with getting it finished,” he remembers. “At the time, I was working as an electrician. Once I was on the job, I found I had a talent for construction—I was a fast learner and I really enjoyed the work. After my sister’s house was finished, I got a job with one of the contractors I’d been working with. A few year later, I attended trade school to get a more formal education, and soon after that I earned my contractor’s license and started my own business.”

Today, as president of An Ky Construction Inc. (which he named after his father), Hung says he enjoys all aspects of his construction career. “I have a lot of fun doing what I do. I like talking with my clients and employees, and sometimes I’ll put on my tool belt and get in on the work. After finishing a project, I like to sit there and enjoy the beauty of it.”

Originally from Vietnam, Hung came to the United States in 1983 and today resides in South San Jose. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family. “All my family is here in South San Jose, including my wife and daughters, brothers, and cousins. We’re very close and do everything from birthday get-togethers to family camping trips.” Hung also likes to pursue aquatic hobbies like boating and fishing. “I love the water,” he affirms. “I like taking my boat out and going wakeboarding, water skiing, and fishing on the San Francisco Bay.”

When asked his secret to keeping customers satisfied, Hung says it’s all about relationships. “I make a point of getting to know my clients and learning about their expectations for their building projects. By asking plenty of questions and listening to their needs, I’m able to get a clear idea of what they want and perform the job accordingly. This leads to a high level of customer satisfaction as well as customer referrals, which make up a good portion of my business.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Hung says he’d travel. “I haven’t thought about retirement much because I love my job and don’t really want to retire. However, I do love to travel, so if I did retire, I’d buy an RV and drive all over the U.S. with my wife.”

Sergiu Deac: Building Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE — After finding the opportunity he sought in the United States, Sergiu Deac continued to build upon that initial foundation and further his career. “In 2001, I left my home country of Romania and came to the U.S. to start a new life,” he recounts. “For me, the U.S. is a place where, even if you come with nothing, you can be successful if you work hard enough, so it seemed like a good environment in which to pursue my professional career.” Sergiu started out working for his cousin, a general contractor who taught him everything from kitchen and bathroom remodeling to custom home building. Eventually, he used the knowledge and experience he’d gained to start his own construction company.

Today, as owner of Best Construction, Sergiu says his favorite part of his job is building relationships with his clients. “I love working with people and seeing the happiness on their faces after we’ve completed their projects. I also enjoy seeing the finished product, and I take pride in the knowledge that I’m leaving behind a legacy with what I build.”

A resident of San Jose, Sergiu spends most of his time outside of work with his wife and business partner, Anamaria, and their two boys, Darius and Luca. “Our boys are the diamonds of our lives,” he says. “However, like most boys, they’re full of energy, which is why we do a lot of outdoor activities like hiking.” Sergiu also enjoys having fun with friends (many of whom are former clients), riding his motorcycle and going fishing.

In his life and career, Sergiu espouses the importance of honesty. “I think it’s important to be a man of your word, both personally and professionally,” he says. “A lot of people say things they don’t actually mean, especially in politics and the media, but for me, it’s critical to say what you mean and follow through with it. I think that has been a key part of my company’s success.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Sergiu says he’d see the world. “I don’t see myself being completely retired; I’ll probably work until the last day of my life because I enjoy what I do. However, if I had the time, I’d definitely travel more. In general, I don’t think humans travel enough—we’re so busy taking care of our families and trying to be successful that we forget there’s a whole world out there to explore.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Any part of Asia, because I’ve never been there.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Experiences and relationships.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Hang out and relax with my family.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: Christmas.
