Our four-year-old mattress is sagging in the areas where my husband and I sleep. While the mattress has a 10-year limited warranty (my last one didn’t have to be replaced for 15 years), it only covers manufacturing defects, not normal wear and tear. It’s not enough to say that your mattress has become uncomfortable.

The warranty doesn’t cover gradual softening or sagging because of a poor foundation. It will cover broken coils and it might cover deep, permanent sagging called “body impressions.” So, this is where it gets tricky. The sag depth has to be at least 1.5 inches without weight on the mattress. You can measure this with a straight edge and a ruler.

To make the case to the manufacturer, I’ll need measurements, lots of photos (including of the bed frame) and proof of purchase. Based on my research, my complaint is common for this brand and type of mattress. At the end of the day, though, any compensation largely depends on the 1.5-inch measurement. I think it still might be worth making a warranty claim, because some companies will offer a partial credit or a replacement option. In the meantime, I’ll be sleeping on a high-density mattress topper so my back won’t ache in the morning!

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies.

Related Articles
Your Guide to Being a Savvy Consumer
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free
Find Top Rated Companies in the San Francisco Bay Area
