Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for plumbing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For The Water Heater Guys, Inc., the most effective way to keep clients happy is to provide them with highly professional, trustworthy service. “Our customers know and trust that we’re going to do a professional job,” affirms owner Luigi C. “We’re in this business to do great work and serve the public, and that comes through on every job. Customer service seems to be a lost art, but we’re bringing it back one customer at a time.”

The Water Heater Guys has been repairing and replacing traditional, tankless, and electric water heaters for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Francisco Counties since 2014. The company is able to offer same-day service on most jobs, and its technicians are available seven days a week for the convenience of its customers.

Unlike less experienced plumbing companies that take a “one size fits all” approach to each job in an effort to maximize their workload volume, The Water Heater Guys focuses on the details of every project so it can provide the best possible service. “We set ourselves apart by the way we treat our customers,” says Luigi. “Low prices are always good, but our hard work, reliability and honesty are what people really remember.”

Another distinguishing attribute of The Water Heater Guys is its special expertise with Bradford White water heaters, which Luigi says are the best products on the market. “In my 16-year career, I’ve never seen a brand that needs less repairs and has a lower number of warranty call-backs. It’s also the only water heater that’s manufactured in the United States. We can work on all makes and models of water heaters, but we stake our reputation on Bradford White.”

Industry Info

Progressive codes and products are keeping the plumbing industry Green.

“The fact that the plumbing industry is going more Green is great for California residents,” says Luigi C., owner of The Water Heater Guys, Inc. in Redwood City. “Take hybrid water heaters—instead of having a 100-gallon water heater, you can install a hybrid heater with a 50-gallon bladder that acts like a 100-gallon tank. That saves water and energy and still allows you to have hot water on demand.”

While tankless water heaters are still more expensive than traditional water heaters, these new options bridge the gap between technology and price. “Some new products have smaller tanks that replace large water heaters, and their prices are cut in half compared to tankless water heaters,” says Luigi. “They still require venting systems and electrical outlets in close proximity to the devices, but they’re good options if you’re price-conscious or want to be environmentally-friendly.”

Solar plumbing offers options and eco-friendly appeal
Solar water heaters use solar panels instead of electricity to heat stored water. These systems, which come in active (with circulating pumps) and passive (without circulating pumps or controls) versions, offer reliable hot water for less money and energy usage.

Research shows up to 25 percent of most homeowners’ utility bills go toward heating water. The installation and use of solar plumbing systems can reduce that cost by about two-thirds. Most systems use a solar panel that’s connected to a water storage tank (most are like traditional water heaters). Recent developments in solar heating mean that even a small solar panel array can provide enough solar energy to heat water, and the tank can keep it warm for hours. This is true even on cloudy days and in areas that don’t get constant sunlight. Still, many homeowners who use solar plumbing systems also have traditional water heater systems in their homes as backup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are some advantages and disadvantages of tankless water heaters?
A: “The upfront price is an obvious disadvantage. Tankless water heaters cost considerably more than traditional water heaters, but the average person will save $25 to $30 a month on their PG&E bill, so it evens out. You’ll also have consistent hot water, no matter how much you use.”

Q: Is it possible to have instant hot water?
A: “Yes. We can install an aftermarket pump on your water heater and a valve sensor in the nearest bathroom, so you’ll get hot water within seconds of turning on a fixture.”

Q: Are some pipes more efficient than others?
A: “Yes. For example, copper pipes are more efficient than galvanized pipes, which is unfortunate because most homes have galvanized piping.”

Q: Are all water heater tanks as efficient as others?
A: “Different brands have certain pros and cons, so you should talk to us about your needs and wishes so we can suggest some options.”

Q: Should I have my old water heater replaced for safety’s sake?
A: “Not necessarily. Just because a water heater is old doesn’t mean it’s unsafe. Older water heaters are ‘grandfathered in’ regardless of new regulations because they met the code standards when they were installed. We still work on 20-year-old water heaters that don’t have earthquake straps because the previous code didn’t require them. That being said, you should definitely install earthquake straps on your old water heater to ensure safety.”

Luigi C.: Mind, Body and Soul

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

REDWOOD CITY — When it came time to choose a professional path, Luigi C. settled on a trade that not only offered both physical and mental stimulation, but was also something he could be passionate about. “I’ve always been a worker,” he says. “I worked construction as a kid and did a lot of odd jobs here and there, but it was plumbing that really took my interest. Most of all, I liked the fact that it wasn’t just a physical job—I had to use my mind as well. I started out working for a company that specialized in water heaters and founded my own business in 2014. I absolutely love every aspect of what I do.”

Today, as owner of The Water Heater Guys, Inc., Luigi says his favorite part of his job is interacting with others. “I’m a people person, so getting to meet new people and make new friends is the icing on the cake for me. I also enjoy running my own business. It’s hard work, but it’s what I’m built for, and I like being able to treat customers and employees the way I’d want to be treated.”

As a resident of Redwood City, Luigi appreciates his convenient proximity to the rest of the Bay Area. “The best thing about living on the Peninsula is being centrally located,” he affirms. “East Bay, North Bay, South Bay, the beach—everything is within a relatively short distance.” When he’s not working, Luigi says the bulk of his free time revolves around sports. “I recently got back into boxing—not competitively, just as a way to stay fit. I’m also a big sports fan, and I root for the Raiders, Warriors and Giants.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Luigi cites three critical virtues. “My mantra is, ‘Honest, hardworking and reliable’—three qualities my mother taught me when I was growing up,” he explains. “She was one of the kindest, hardest-working people I’ve ever known and a huge inspiration to me. Those three words are on every company logo because that’s what I strive for as a professional.”

When asked about his future career goals, Luigi lays out his plan to expand into charity work. “I’m passionate about helping people, and I’m working on starting a nonprofit that will be connected to my business. Basically, I want to give opportunities to young kids, single mothers and anyone else who is interested in learning about plumbing or running a business. The hope is that by giving people practical skills, we can be a stepping stone for them to reach bigger and better things.”

  • How to Light a Water Heater Pilot Light

REDWOOD CITY — When your water heater’s pilot light goes out, you’ll need to know the right technique to re-light it and restore your home’s hot water supply. If you don’t already know how to do this, follow these step-by-step instructions:

Note: Every water heater is a little different, but for the most part, the same technique is used for re-lighting the pilot light.

    1. Turn the temperature control knob to “Pilot” and hold the button down to let the gas flow out.

    2. While pressing down on the knob, press the water heater’s ignition switch. You may have to do this several times before it ignites. If you have an older water heater, it may not have an ignition switch; in this case, you’ll need to hold a lighter up to the burner (preferably a “wand” style lighter) and light it manually.

    3. Once the pilot light has ignited, do not release the gas valve; hold it for another 30 to 60 seconds. This will ensure the pilot light stays lit after you release the valve.

    4. If the pilot light stays lit, you’re in business. The only thing left is to turn the temperature control knob to your desired setting. The average temperature setting for a household is 120 degrees, but you can set yours for up to 160 degrees, depending on how hot you like your water. However, if you have small children in your home, a lower setting is best to ensure safety.

Within an hour of re-lighting the pilot light, you should have a full tank of hot water.

Expert video tip
  • Video: How to Light a Water Heater Pilot Light

    Complete Video Transcription:

REDWOOD CITY — Host, Sarah Rutan: If your water heater’s pilot light goes out, it’s helpful to know how to re-light it yourself. Today we’re in Redwood City with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Luigi C. of The Water Heater Guys to learn how it’s done.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Luigi C.: So, today’s water heater tip is how to light your own pilot light. And here we go. Every water heater component is different, but relatively the same, which what you’d want to do if you have no hot water and your pilot light is off, what you want to do is turn your knob setting onto pilot. Hold the button down to let the gas flow go through. Press your piezo igniter, which sparks the light. If I were you, I’d press it maybe 10, 12 times, like this.

The most important thing is after you click that button, keep the gas flowing for about 30, 45 seconds, maybe even up to a minute. Once you let it go, the pilot light should stay lit.

Then you turn it back onto your original setting, which would be 120 degrees. And you’ll hear it come on. Hot setting is average, every household, 120 degrees. After that, it goes by increments of 10. “A” would be 130, “B” 140, “C” 150. Very hot, 160. No residential water heater ever goes above 160 anywhere. But a lot of people like me who like hot water, I’d only go to A, which is 130. And then one hour after that, you’ll have a full tank of hot water.
