Industry Info

Be absolutely sure that the paving expert you hire is actually an expert. Leen Van Bergen, vice president of Union City’s System Pavers, says it’s not unusual for paving companies to be asked to repair jobs that have been abandoned by other crews. He’s even been asked to testify in court cases involving unscrupulous crews who’ve taken advantage of clients and their money. “When you hire a paving company, it’s absolutely crucial to make sure it’s legitimate,” he says.

Mr. Van Bergen notes the existence of rules that regulate the maximum deposit allowable for a paving job, how payments can be collected, and who must be licensed. He advises consumers to confirm their contractor is licensed, insured, bonded, and carries full workers’ compensation. “As a homeowner, make sure you have no liability,” he says.

Reputable contactors are also far more likely to follow basic installation guidelines that, when ignored, can cause pavers to fail prematurely. “I’ve seen installations with too much sand, hardly any base material, or pavers that have been used in the wrong application for a driveway,” says Mr. Van Bergen. Homeowners should confirm that their contractors are using the best available stone materials rather than “seconds,” he says.

Like most homeowners considering a paving project for their home, you’re probably unfamiliar with these best-practice guidelines. Therefore, your best recourse is to hire a reputable company. That way, you’ll feel comfortable trusting its employees to act with integrity and skill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many days does installation take?

A: It really depends on the size of the job. But our crews are dedicated to one project only, and they won’t leave in the middle to start up another jobsite.

Q: Do you have an onsite superintendent?

A: Yes. Each superintendent handles no more than two or three jobs per week, and spends a great deal of time on each project.

Q: What exactly is the process for laying pavers?

A: We take up the original material, dig down a total of nine inches, level that out, and install a geo-fabric material. Then we install and compact six inches of glass tube base material. Next comes an inch of sand, upon which we hand-install the pavers. We install concrete bumping under the borders, then compact the whole system. We spread sand between the joints and compact again. The final step is sweeping and cleaning.

Q: Do pavers require much maintenance?

A: Virtually none. You should do some sweeping and cleaning, but there’s no real maintenance necessary.

Q: What can you tell me about places with growth between the pavers?

A: Most of what grows between pavers comes from above, like seeds floating through the air that land in a crack and sprawl. They can be prevented or dealt with by using any weed-killing product. Or they can be power washed out.

Q: Why are pavers better than concrete or asphalt?

A: Concrete is gray, drab and will crack over time. With pavers, you’re actually enhancing the home rather than just installing a utility feature. Pavers will also last much longer than concrete. Concrete doesn’t lend itself to doing any repairs underneath, but pavers can be unzipped and zipped back—you can do work on pavers, put them back and nobody knows you were even there. Asphalt gets hot in the summer—it’s ugly and deteriorates in the heat.

Q: What’s the difference between a normal and synthetic lawn?

A: Synthetic lawns don’t really need any maintenance except for an occasional sweep, and they don’t need water, which saves money. They also don’t need any mow-and-blow maintenance from yard workers. Children love it because they don’t get dirty.

Q: Do you do gas installations?

A: Yes, either propane or natural gas.

Q: What kinds of lighting do your offer?

A: We use lighting techniques that really enhance a home rather than just light it. We want to feature the house with our lighting. As we say, ‘The novice concerns himself with the fixture, the professional focuses on the effect.’

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Andrew Headington

Andrew Headington: A Twofold Fulfillment

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

UNION CITY — As a lover of the arts and the outdoors, Andrew Headington feels fortunate to have found a job that fulfills his dual passions. “I’ve always had a passion for the arts, but at the same time, I’ve always been a very outdoorsy person, so when I heard about landscape architecture in college, it seemed like a good fit for me,” he explains. “I ended up getting my B.S. in landscape architecture from the University of Connecticut, and I’ve been in the field ever since.”

Today, as sales manager for System Pavers, Andrew says his favorite part of his job is the daily challenges it entails. “I love meeting new people and helping them solve their landscape and hardscape problems. Every day is a new challenge, which keeps things exciting.”

A resident of Marin (where he lives with his wife, Laurie), Andrew expresses his appreciation for the Bay Area’s temperate climate and lush landscape. “I have no complaints about the weather in Marin. It’s absolutely gorgeous up here. The best part is you can take part in outdoor activities basically year-round.”

Outside of work, Andrew can often be found pursuing one of his three main hobbies. “First off, I brew my own beer, which I’ve been doing for about 15 years,” he explains. “Secondly, I play guitar in a local band called Polkalicious that gigs around San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area. Basically, we take hits from the ’80s, ’90s, and today and turn them into polka songs. Thirdly, I’m an avid kiteboarder. Kiteboarding is like surfing, but you have a giant kite attached to your surfboard and use the wind to navigate your way around.” In addition to these pastimes, Andrew enjoys working on his house, hiking and snowboarding.

In regard to his professional career, Andrew espouses the importance of honesty. “It may sound a bit generic, but the phrase, ‘Honesty is the best policy’ is absolutely true, especially from a sales standpoint,” he says. “That’s why I always make it a point to be honest with customers, and I do my best to subvert the ‘used car salesman’ stereotype. I also try to be a good leader and have a positive impact on my coworkers.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Andrew says he would see the world. “I would definitely travel. In particular, I’d like to visit Southeast Asia. There’s some incredible development happening over there, with some really interesting designs and just a totally different way of life, so it’d be neat to experience that.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Bananas.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Sol Food in San Rafael.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?
A: I’d go to the past to uncover some of the mysteries of ancient times. For example, I would love to go back and see how the Egyptians built the pyramids.

Q: What’s your favorite Bay Area brewery?
A: Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa.

Q: If you could immediately master any musical instrument, what would you choose?
A: The banjo that’s hanging on my wall. Maybe I’d start a bluegrass band in addition to my polka band.

  • Benefits of a Dedicated Pedestrian Walkway

UNION CITY — One aspect of home design that often gets overlooked is pedestrian access to the front door from the sidewalk or driveway. In these cases, getting to the front door can be an awkward ordeal, whether you have to travel up a driveway between two parked cars or walk through your lawn or garden. That’s why, if you’re looking to invest in a home improvement or upgrade, you should consider the addition of a dedicated pedestrian walkway. Besides creating a convenient route to your front door, a dedicated walkway increases your home’s curb appeal and gives it a more inviting façade.

To demonstrate the aesthetic impact a dedicated walkway can have, many established design firms have software that enables them to create a virtual rendering of the proposed design element. This rendering allows the homeowner to see an accurate representation of what the completed product would look like. In many cases, homeowners are surprised to see what a significant improvement a dedicated walkway makes on their homes’ appearance.

Not only will a dedicated pedestrian walkway increase the beauty and functionality of your home, it’s also likely to increase its resale value. For this reason, whether you’re planning to remain in your home indefinitely or sell it in the coming years, a dedicated pedestrian walkway is a worthwhile investment.

    Complete Video Transcription:

UNION CITY — Host, Sarah Rutan: When it comes to investing in home upgrades, one exterior improvement can increase both functionality and curb appeal. Today we’re in Union City with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Andrew Headington of System Pavers to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Andrew Headington:  Today’s tip, we’re going to talk about increasing your home’s curb appeal and pedestrian experience by adding a dedicated pedestrian walkway. And a lot of the houses I visit lack this amenity and find myself traveling up a driveway between two parked cars or between a car and a garden to get to the front door. So, today, we’re going to look at an example of a typical house that lacks this dedicated pedestrian walkway to the front door and we’re going to show you that now. One tool that many established design outfits have is the ability to create a rendering or model of the proposed design element that can help the client see what the project could look like when completed. In this example, I’m going to use a simple software that will allow me to input the image that I show you and build a pedestrian pathway and entryway that now I can show a customer, so they can see the tremendous improvement to the curb appeal of their home.

Here, you can see how much more inviting this house is and how this walkway is going to change the experience a guest has when entering the property. This project is also going to increase the visual appeal or curb appeal of the property while at the same time increasing this home’s value. Of course, there are lots of ways that you can improve your home’s curb appeal and this is just one. I hope you enjoyed this tip.
