Unlike bodybuilding and other strenuous training techniques, Pilates can be practiced by any age group. “Pilates is something you can do all your life because it focuses more on controlled movements that rigorous physical exertion,” affirms Ms. Himes-Powers. “That’s why people tend to feel refreshed and rejuvenated after a Pilates session rather than beaten down, as can be the case with other workouts.”

    SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: For those who spend their workdays sitting at a desk, a simple exercise can help counter the effects of a sedentary livelihood. To learn more, we’re in San Francisco with Susan Himes-Powers of Simply Balanced, speaking on behalf of our Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carie Matthias.

    Susan Himes-Powers: So, my expert tip for today is about countering the posture of sitting at our desk job all day, and to help you strengthen the muscles of your upper back, and to help loosen the tightness in your neck muscles. So, Kelly’s going to be my model today. This is all about your rhomboid muscles, which sit between your shoulder blades and angle up from the inner border of your shoulder blade towards your head. And when they contract, they pull the shoulders back and up toward the head. And when they relax, the shoulder blades move down and apart, and they pull in and up, and they slide down and out. Thanks, Kelly.

    So, the exercise I’m going to show you, I’m just using a three-pound hand weight. You can go heavier if you like, but those muscles get really weak and tight, and you might want a lighter weight to start with because we’re going to do about ten reps each. So, the opposite foot of my hand with a hand weight goes forward. So, I’m in a bit of a lunging position. My free hand is resting on my thigh. And with a flat back, I’m leaning over that leg.

    My right arm hangs straight down from my shoulder. And I’m going to pull my shoulder blade back toward my spine, and let the weight pull my shoulder away from my spine. And I’m breathing, keeping the breath moving, as I move the shoulder forward and backward. So, we’re going to repeat this about ten times. After you’ve done ten of those, we’re going to turn it into shoulder circles.

    So, the shoulder’s going to roll forward and up, and back and down. And you’re trying to make that shoulder roll be as big as you can make it. Ten times in this direction. And then we reverse and do 10 times in the opposite direction. And after you finish those sets and you’ve done both sides, if we switch, I switch hands, I switch legs.

    And I do 10 of the shoulder pulling back and forward, circling in one direction, circling in the opposite direction, 10 times each. And after that, you stand up and see how easy it is to stand upright effortlessly, with your head floating off your spine, and your neck muscles relaxed and loose.
