Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for Pilates studios that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Simply Balanced, the best way to keep clients happy is to focus on being responsive to their shifting needs. “Some studios have very rote methodologies for teaching Pilates, but we prefer to take a more customized approach,” says Manager Susan Himes-Powers. “Whether clients are in the mood for advanced workouts or just feeling a little extra sensitive, our trainers are able to respond accordingly and meet them where they’re at.”

Simply Balanced has been teaching individual, duet and group Pilates sessions at its San Francisco studio since 1994. The company’s instructors design sessions for clients of all fitness levels, from those who want to enhance their flexibility and core strength to those who need physical rehabilitation for joint pain and the latter phases of post-breast cancer treatment.

Unlike less experienced Pilates studios that lack the training and equipment to offer a variety of options, Simply Balanced provides a wide array of workout styles and environments. “Not everyone is comfortable in a crowded class with loud music, so we provide different options to meet our clients’ individual needs,” affirms Ms. Himes-Powers. “We can accommodate all types of workout preferences, and we even offer live online video conference classes so clients can keep up with their practice from home, at work or while they travel.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Simply Balanced is its well-rounded team of trainers, all of whom are trained in industry-best practices and dedicated to improving their clients’ physical health. “Our trainers are passionate, creative, and devoted to the health and wellness of our clientele,” says Ms. Himes-Powers. “Their professional backgrounds range from dance and gymnastics to medicine and massage therapy, and they each bring a unique store of knowledge and experience to our studio.”

Industry Info

Whether you want to stay fit or rehabilitate following an injury, it’s worthwhile to consider the benefits of Pilates. Invented by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a fitness discipline that combines various training techniques, including gymnastics, martial arts and yoga. According to Susan Himes-Powers, manager of Simply Balanced in San Francisco, the purpose of Pilates is to address not mere individual muscles, but the body as a whole. “The overall philosophy of Pilates is total body conditioning,” she explains. “Regardless of which exercise or piece of equipment you’re using, you can get a full body workout. Whether you want to improve your balance and posture or increase your strength and flexibility, Pilates can help you achieve your goals in a healthy, holistic manner.”

Unlike bodybuilding and other strenuous training techniques, Pilates can be practiced by any age group. “Pilates is something you can do all your life because it focuses more on controlled movements that rigorous physical exertion,” affirms Ms. Himes-Powers. “That’s why people tend to feel refreshed and rejuvenated after a Pilates session rather than beaten down, as can be the case with other workouts.”

Besides general balance and strengthening, Pilates is being used by many studios to aid with rehabilitation and healing. “Pilates training is easily adaptable, so studios are able to customize fitness regimens for clients who are coming out of acute injuries and trying to ease back into their daily lives,” says Ms. Himes-Powers.

Additionally, with the increasing prevalence of sedentary occupations (such as working at a computer), Pilates is a great way to stay strong, flexible and healthy. “Nowadays, people sit much more than they used to, which can lead to poor posture; repetitive strain injuries; and back, wrist, and shoulder soreness,” says Ms. Himes-Powers. “Pilates helps people with these conditions regain their joint, spinal and muscular health.”

  • The Importance Of Daily Movement

SAN FRANCISCO — In today’s increasingly sedentary world, the simple act of movement often gets neglected, which can result in stiffness, soreness and muscular atrophy. So, to keep your body limber and your muscles engaged, you should make it a point to move your body every day. Few people realize that engaging in a couple of 10-minute movement sessions on a daily basis can have greater benefits than an hour of vigorous exercise once a week. This commitment to daily movement will help you maintain bodily health not only in the present, but even more so as you enter your later years.

A good example of the importance of daily movement is joint mobility. Since the body’s joints don’t have a direct blood supply, they require movement to stay healthy, which is why simple movements such as rolling the shoulders back and forth can be helpful. It doesn’t have to be strenuous—you simply want to take the joints through all ranges of motion. Besides promoting greater comfort and flexibility, keeping your joints healthy will make you more prepared for any exercise you plan on doing.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Exercise to Improve Posture

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: For those who spend their workdays sitting at a desk, a simple exercise can help counter the effects of a sedentary livelihood. To learn more, we’re in San Francisco with Susan Himes-Powers of Simply Balanced, speaking on behalf of our Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Carie Matthias.

Susan Himes-Powers: So, my expert tip for today is about countering the posture of sitting at our desk job all day, and to help you strengthen the muscles of your upper back, and to help loosen the tightness in your neck muscles. So, Kelly’s going to be my model today. This is all about your rhomboid muscles, which sit between your shoulder blades and angle up from the inner border of your shoulder blade towards your head. And when they contract, they pull the shoulders back and up toward the head. And when they relax, the shoulder blades move down and apart, and they pull in and up, and they slide down and out. Thanks, Kelly.

So, the exercise I’m going to show you, I’m just using a three-pound hand weight. You can go heavier if you like, but those muscles get really weak and tight, and you might want a lighter weight to start with because we’re going to do about ten reps each. So, the opposite foot of my hand with a hand weight goes forward. So, I’m in a bit of a lunging position. My free hand is resting on my thigh. And with a flat back, I’m leaning over that leg.

My right arm hangs straight down from my shoulder. And I’m going to pull my shoulder blade back toward my spine, and let the weight pull my shoulder away from my spine. And I’m breathing, keeping the breath moving, as I move the shoulder forward and backward. So, we’re going to repeat this about ten times. After you’ve done ten of those, we’re going to turn it into shoulder circles.

So, the shoulder’s going to roll forward and up, and back and down. And you’re trying to make that shoulder roll be as big as you can make it. Ten times in this direction. And then we reverse and do 10 times in the opposite direction. And after you finish those sets and you’ve done both sides, if we switch, I switch hands, I switch legs.

And I do 10 of the shoulder pulling back and forward, circling in one direction, circling in the opposite direction, 10 times each. And after that, you stand up and see how easy it is to stand upright effortlessly, with your head floating off your spine, and your neck muscles relaxed and loose.
