In addition to helping homeowners create showers that meet their practical and aesthetic needs, the company has the training and equipment to work on glass products like windows, doors, skylights, commercial storefront systems, and more.

Owner Jason Patterson says See Through Glass & Door’s dedication to customer satisfaction has been a key factor in its success. “We want each client to have a great experience, so we take the time to listen to them and figure out exactly what they want to accomplish. Ultimately, this allows us to provide them with high-quality work that’s completed in a decent amount of time for a reasonable price.”

See Through Glass & Door takes a detail-oriented approach to every glass project, which Mr. Patterson says is crucial for ensuring positive results. “With shower enclosures, for example, if you’re off by even an eighth of an inch, it can jeopardize the entire piece, so getting the details correct is very important. We’re extremely careful—we double-check our work as we go, and if something doesn’t look right, we’ll fix it before moving on.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for shower enclosure companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For See Through Glass & Door, the most effective way to keep clients happy is to provide them with finished products that are exactly what they envisioned. “Our favorite part of the job is helping customers figure out what they want and seeing how happy they are when it’s done,” says owner Jason Patterson. “They really appreciate how much we care about their long-term satisfaction.”

See Through Glass & Door has been installing, replacing, and repairing shower enclosures for clients in Sonoma and Napa Counties since 2017. In addition to helping homeowners create showers that meet their aesthetic preferences and practical needs, the company has the in-house capabilities to work on glass products like windows, skylights, doors and commercial storefront systems.

Unlike less experienced shower enclosure contractors that take shortcuts in an effort to maximize their workload volume, See Through Glass & Door takes a meticulous approach to each job in order to achieve first-rate results. “We’re very detail-oriented and we make sure every step of our work is done correctly before moving on,” affirms Mr. Patterson. “Ultimately, that’s the best way to ensure our clients have positive experiences and don’t encounter any problems after their jobs are complete.”

Another distinguishing attribute of See Through Glass & Door is its dedication to being upfront with its clients before their projects begin so there are no misunderstandings. “We go through our process with each customer and make sure they understand what their job entails,” explains Mr. Patterson. “We listen to their concerns and work with them to make sure they’re getting exactly what they want. They know that if they’re ever unhappy with something, we’ll make it right.”

Industry Info

Before installing a glass shower enclosure, make sure you’ve done your homework.

Open any home improvement magazine or watch any remodeling TV show and you’re likely to see glass shower enclosures. An alternative to shower curtains, glass shower enclosures can transform bathrooms from average to spectacular. However, as with any home upgrade, there are numerous features you need to consider before jumping in.

Pick a foundation
Showers have three basic foundation options: tiled floor, shower tray or alcove bathtub. Each has its pros and cons, and your decision will inform the rest of your choices and the finished product.

  • A tiled floor is flush with the bathroom floor, often with a slight angle toward the wall or drain to direct water. Sometimes called walk-in showers or curbless showers, they’re a smart option for older homeowners, those who need accessible showers and those who appreciate minimalist design.
  • Shower trays have a threshold that needs to be stepped over, and each threshold requires its own glass pane to form the wall of the enclosure.
  • Alcove bathtubs sit within an alcove, usually enclosed by walls on three sides. Shower glass creates the fourth wall.

Framed or frameless?
Framed shower doors have a metal (usually aluminum or stainless steel) surround with hinges, handles and other hardware. Frameless shower doors usually have little to no framing and are generally made of a solid sheet of glass. This is a modern style and can be easier to clean and maintain.

Understanding glass options

  • Thickness: Glass panels vary from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch or more. The thicker the glass, the less framing is needed. Your contractor should recommend the correct thickness for your job.
  • Opacity: From clear to etched to textured, your choice of glass changes the look of your shower. Clear glass is the most modern choice, frosted or textured offers privacy, and etching and custom cuts add visual interest.
  • Coatings: Many shower contractors offer glass that’s treated with a coating to repel water; soap residue; and substances that can make the glass appear dingy or scummy, grow mildew, stain, or discolor.

Choose your finish
Frames and hardware for glass shower enclosures and doors come in a variety of metals, including nickel, chrome, bronze and brass in brushed, oil rubbed, and other finishes. This completes the look of the enclosure and should be carefully planned to match fixtures and other bathroom metal details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How wide should my glass shower enclosure be?
A: It depends on a few factors. The width of the glass panels dictates how sturdy they are and the aesthetics of the installation. Remember, the bigger the shower, the more deflection you’ll get on the glass, which allows it to move back and forth. If a piece is above a certain square footage, it needs thicker glass so it doesn’t bow. You need to make sure you get something strong enough to handle the load it’s going to bear over time.

Q: Can you apply a water-repelling glaze to my new shower glass?
A: Yes, all of our showers include an integral shield coating on the inside unless we’re specifically instructed otherwise. It’s like an armor for the shower—it makes the water bead off instead of etching into the glass.

Q: How has technology changed windows?
A: The seals on windows have improved and insulated glass units are a lot more efficient—they last longer and they’re built to a higher standard. New windows tend to hold up for 30 to 50 years, which is about three times as long as they used to last.

Q: Are double-pane windows still the best choice?
A: Triple-pane windows are the best for harsh environments, but as soon as you get past double-pane windows, the price shoots way up and it becomes a lot more labor-intensive. We don’t deal with that much in Northern California, though. Once we determine your needs, we can help you choose the best windows for your home.

Q: Are there different grades of glass?
A: There are different grades of mirrors, but glass manufacturers don’t have a grading system for glass. You just want to make sure your contractor gets their supplies from a quality manufacturer.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jason Patterson

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Jason Patterson: A Clear Trajectory

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

PETALUMA — An early introduction to the glass industry gave Jason Patterson a clear trajectory for his professional career. “I started working with a glass company in San Rafael when I was 16,” he remembers. “It was a good fit and I enjoyed the work, so I just stuck with it. Over time, I continued to learn about different aspects of the industry, from windows to glass doors and shower enclosures. After high school, I spent some time in retail management, where I gained valuable experience in customer service. In 2018, my wife, Margaret, and I started our own glass business.”

Today, as owner of See Through Glass & Door, Jason says his favorite part of his job is seeing the results of his work. “Glass is one of the last aspects of a remodeling project, so it’s neat to see our work in the context of the finished product. And, of course, it’s very gratifying to see the client happy with the result as well.”

A resident of Petaluma, Jason spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “Margaret and I have three kids, so we do a lot of family activities,” he details. “Other than that, my favorite hobby is gold mining. I usually go up to the Sacramento and Auburn areas where gold can still be found in the rivers. It’s hard work for a hobby—there’s a lot of hiking and digging involved—but it’s a lot of fun when you actually start finding stuff.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Jason espouses the importance of honesty. “I get really frustrated when I see companies being dishonest with clients or operating in unethical ways,” he relates. “I don’t think that’s right, which is why I always try to be straightforward with our clients and do everything in an honest manner. I want our customers to have positive experiences with us and not worry that they’re being taken advantage of.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jason says he’d take his favorite hobby to an unprecedented location. “I’d probably go gold mining in Alaska or Australia. There are a lot of gold-rich areas in those places, so it would be fun to see what I could find.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Seared in Petaluma.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?

A: The San Francisco 49ers.

Q: Did you play any sports in high school?

A: I played football and hockey, and I was also on the wrestling team.

Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or the future?

A: Definitely the past. I know it’s mostly just nostalgia at this point, but it seemed like a better time.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

A: Hang out with my wife and watch a movie together.

  • Learning About Your Shower Glass Options

PETALUMA — Whether you’re installing a new shower or remodeling an existing one, you’ll need to choose a glass product. The two most commonly used shower glass products are standard tempered glass and starphire glass.

The biggest difference between these two products is their aesthetic qualities. Whereas standard tempered glass has a greenish tint, starphire glass’ tint is more bluish. Starphire glass also offers superior clarity compared to standard glass.

Starphire glass’ aesthetic superiority is the result of a unique manufacturing process, during which most of its innate heavy metals are removed. Because of this, starphire glass is also known as “low-iron” glass. The results are greater clarity and a more pleasing quality of light diffusion.

    Complete Video Transcription:

PETALUMA — Host, Sarah Rutan: When choosing glass for a new shower enclosure, learning about your options can help you make an informed purchase. Today we’re in Petaluma with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jason Patterson of See Through Glass & Door to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jason Patterson: We’re going to go over a couple of the most common options that people go with on glass type for heavy glass showers. These are the two most common glass types we tend to get or install. This is a half-inch clear tempered glass. This is a half-inch Starfire glass, which means the heavy metals have been removed from the glass. It gives it a clearer, more blue diffusion through the edge, and a little bit more clarity through the glass itself. The biggest difference between the two is about looks or aesthetics. The clear tempered glass will leave more of a greenish diffusion when you look through the face of the glass, as well as through the edge of the glass. The Starfire is a much clearer, less visible type of glass, and the diffusion is much more blue – much more pretty.
