Company Philosophy

"We take care of every person one car at a time. Getting a car fixed after an accident isn't always a positive experience for people, so we do whatever we can to help our customers through the process and work hard to meet their expectations."

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto body repair companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Scott’s Body Shop, the key to achieving and maintaining customer satisfaction is simple: take a personalized approach to the body repair process so every person who visits its shop feels as comfortable as possible. “We know car accidents can be stressful, so we really focus on helping our customers through the process and putting smiles on their faces,” says owner Robert Scott Jr. “Seeing the relief in their eyes when they pick up their cars lets us know we’ve met their expectations and helped them move past the incidents that brought them here.”

Scott’s Body Shop has been providing collision repair services for all types of vehicles at its Santa Cruz facility since 1993. The company has the in-house capabilities to handle everything from paint work and frame alignment to glass replacement and electrical repairs, and it guarantees all work for as long as customers own their vehicles.

Unlike less experienced auto body shops that undervalue the importance of staying up-to-date with industry advancements, Scott’s Body Shop implements the latest tools, materials, training methods and quality control procedures in order to provide customers with the best possible services. “We’re an I-CAR Gold Class shop, and we have three ASE Master Collision Technicians on staff, so we know exactly what it takes to perform top-quality body repairs,” says Mr. Scott. “Our equipment, training and quality control checklists ensure each job is done correctly the first time.”

Another unique attribute of Scott’s Body Shop is its status as a family-owned and operated business, which Mr. Scott says is an underrated benefit for customers. “This shop is run by me, my father [Robert Scott Sr.] and my two brothers [Ron Scott and Danny Scott]. We all have a vested interest in the company and look at business from both a personal and professional standpoint. Santa Cruz has a great small-town feel, and the people here really like connecting with local businesses, so being family-owned and operated really appeals to our clientele.”

Industry Info

If you’re in the market for a used car, make sure you know how to tell if a vehicle has been in an accident. Many people prefer buying used cars over new cars, but if that’s your preference, it’s important to carefully research your options so you can avoid buying a vehicle that has been involved in a serious accident. According to Robert Scott Jr., owner of Scott’s Body Shop in Santa Cruz, you have several options when it comes to verifying the safety and history of a used vehicle. “A good place to start is by looking at the door jambs, under the hood and at other solid places to see if all the major parts have the same VIN label,” he says. “That can be a helpful way to determine if parts have been replaced, which is often an indicator of an accident that required extensive body work.”

Mr. Scott says people who are looking to buy used cars can have luck visiting Carfax.com or looking up a vehicle’s VIN on a similar used car website. “Carfax can be helpful, but there isn’t 100 percent participation in the industry yet, so some vehicles and collisions don’t get reported.”

Another easy way to determine the quality of a used car is to get a professional’s opinion. “Most reputable auto body shops will perform visual inspections on vehicles that their customers are thinking of purchasing,” says Mr. Scott. “Auto body professionals know what to look for. They can measure the thickness of the paint to see if there are multiple layers, determine if major parts have been replaced and provide an idea of what happened to the cars in the past.”

Here are some other warning signs to look for when purchasing a used car:

  • The current owner can’t or won’t supply accurate or complete repair/maintenance records.
  • Visible signs of neglect or abuse such as dents, large stains, strong interior odors and chipping paint. While these aren’t definitive signs of problems, it may hold true that someone who doesn’t care about the general appearance of their vehicle may not have taken good care of it mechanically.
  • Leaking fluids or grease stains under the vehicle.
  • Debris in the coolant fluid, which can mean the fluids weren’t regularly changed (a professional may have to check this for you).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to repair my car?

A: Once we perform a teardown estimate, we can determine how many hours your car will need to be in our shop. We meet and even beat the promised date on almost every job.

Q: Should I file an insurance claim after my accident?

A: Filing a claim should be an individual decision based on your preferences, the amount of damage, the accident details and your insurance coverage. Sometimes it helps to get an estimate before you choose whether to file a claim. We can help you decide the best route to take by looking at factors like the total estimate, your deductible and any past claims.

Q: Will I have to communicate with my insurance company?

A: No. Once we take charge of the insurance claim, we’ll handle everything for you.

Q: Can you match my car’s original paint color?

A: Yes. We have an experienced paint technician on staff who knows how to mix the correct color for every vehicle.

Q: Can a car with a bent frame be restored to like-new condition?

A: If it’s an older car, it might need to be totaled, but newer cars have modular frames that are made of multilayered sheet metal, which are designed to be replaced in different quadrants of the car in the event of an accident. Our laser measuring system tells us exactly where these control points are supposed to be.

Q: Do I have to use the body shop that my insurance company sends me to?

A: No. In California, you have the right to choose the body shop you wish to work with, and your insurance company has to honor that choice.

Q: Do you implement Green business practices?

A: Yes, and we’re actually the only Green-certified auto body shop in Santa Cruz. We made the adjustment to waterborne base coats last year, so part of our painting process is cutting down on chemical emissions that the whole country is working on reducing.

Q: Can you help me get a rental car?

A: Yes. We’re conveniently located next to a Hertz location, and Enterprise picks up and drops off from our shop as well. We also have a shuttle that can pick you up and drop you off around the local area.

I would say to go there to get the best service. It is an over the top service. They completely satisfied my requirements for the repair. They did it in such a way that even when my insurance company was being difficult about going through a different body shop, Scott let them know that he would work with me more. I didn't have to worry about the company. All of it is due to the fact that Scott does a lot for the community.

I thought they went out of their way to fulfill my experience beyond what I had hoped for. They fulfilled my dream. I got champagne service and champagne parts for a sparkling wine price.

Besides the work they did for me, there were a couple of scrapes on the side of the car that I asked for an estimate to have them buff out, and they looked at my car and told me they'd do that at no additional charge. I felt like not only did they do a good job on what I was paying them to do, they went above and beyond to help me.

They listened to my concerns and bent over backwards to help me.
