Take simple steps to keep your moving project as affordable as possible. Moving is never an inexpensive venture, but if you’re trying to save money, hiring a cheap company is never the best way. Instead, cut costs the smart way by hiring a mover that provides good value and utilizing the following tips to reduce your expenses:

Move during the off-season or mid-week if possible. Most people move on weekends and during summer months, but according to Peter Poulos, owner of Poulos Moving Systems in Salinas, this can have a sizeable impact on the overall cost of the project. “Moving prices are determined based on availability, which means moving on a weekend in June could cost up to 40 percent more than the normal rate,” he explains. “If you move mid-week or during the winter months, you can usually find companies that offer lower rates.”

Don’t move what you don’t need. Assess your belongings before you begin to pack, and downsize wherever possible. The less stuff you have, the less your move will cost—you can rent a smaller truck, use fewer boxes and supplies, and require less actual moving time. You may even be able to recoup some of your moving costs if you sell unneeded items at a garage sale or online.

Give yourself time. Start preparing as soon as you know you’re moving. This will give you time to collect sturdy boxes, downsize and pack carefully. Ask your moving company for information on packing—some will even show you the best ways to protect your belongings. Start by packing items you rarely use so you have less to do immediately before moving day.

Don’t buy a lot of moving boxes and materials. Instead, reuse sturdy boxes from grocery stores or wholesale clubs. Potato chip boxes make especially good packing boxes because they’re made from heavier cardboard that’s designed to protect fragile cargo. Recycling facilities may also be good places to find reusable boxes. Bubble wrap is expensive, so use towels, newspapers, butcher paper or linens to wrap fragile items.

A: That depends on the types of moving services you need, but we’ll give you an estimate before any work begins. We’re always honest with our customers, and we’ll work with you to come up with the most cost-effective solutions for your move.

A: Yes. All our employees are responsible professionals, not day laborers. They’re good people with a lot of integrity, and we trust them to present our company well to others.

Q: Do you offer packing services?

Q: Who will unpack my belongings after the move?
A: There are many variables when it comes to unpacking, so we leave that decision to our clients. We can unload belongings for a local move or a move where we provide all transit services. Traditional interstate moves are booked through our van lines, so the driver will be the one who unloads your belongings. Some people prefer to hire their own unpacking crews, and that’s perfectly fine as well.

Q: Will the price you quote be the price I pay?
A: Yes, if the services you request during your move match the services we bid, you’ll pay the exact cost of the bid. We typically issue a ‘not-to-exceed price’ to protect our customers. In fact, you may end up paying less if the actual time of the move is less than expected. However, if you request additional moving services or change the scope of the work on the day of the move, there may be additional charges.

Q: What’s your protocol if something gets broken?
A: That depends on the valuation of the item and what the customer wants. If the item is unimportant, we’ll haul it away. If it’s a piece of furniture, we have an on-call furniture repairman who can provide free repairs. We give the industry standard valuation fee for damaged items, which is $0.60 per pound. However, if you buy additional valuation coverage, we’re liable to give you whatever the item is worth after it’s professionally appraised.

Q: What if it rains on the day of my move?
A: We pad wrap everything in the house, so our pads will get wet instead of your furniture. If it’s a hard downpour, we’ll stop the move and wait until it’s safe to move your belongings. Of course, we don’t charge extra for moves that are delayed by weather.

Pete Poulos: On the Move

SALINAS – Not many people turn their post-high school jobs into professional careers, but for Pete Poulos, an early employment opportunity provided a direct path to a lifelong livelihood. “I got a job with a local moving company right out of high school,” he remembers. “I was hired to help out during the busy season, but after showing up and working hard all summer, they decided to keep me.” After working for the company for several years, Pete purchased his own tractor trailer and became an independent contractor, performing interstate hauls for United Van Lines under the business name Poulos Moving Systems. A few years later, his company went from being a sole proprietorship to a full-fledged operation, which today employs a sizeable staff and owns more than nine field vehicles.

As president of Poulos Moving Systems, Pete says one of the things he enjoys most is working closely with his staff members, many of whom he cites as personal acquaintances. “I grew up with a strong core group of friends, and I’ve been fortunate enough to make many of them my colleagues and co-workers. Everyone here knows that when we clock out for the day, I’m not the boss anymore—I’m their friend.”

A lifetime resident of the Monterey Peninsula, Pete says his experience with long-distance moves has given him a greater appreciation of the temperate local climate. “As a driver for United Van Lines, I did moves to Phoenix in the summer and North Dakota in the winter, so I’ve experienced weather extremes on both sides of the spectrum. I was always glad to come back home, where the year-round temperature averages 60 degrees.”

When he’s not working, Pete can often be found engaged in his primary hobby: disc golf. “I’m a pretty simple person—once I find something I enjoy, I tend to stick to it, because I’d rather be really good at one thing than mediocre at a lot of things,” he says. Additionally, Pete enjoys spending time on and off the disc golf course with his eight-year-old daughter, Hera.

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Pete simply replies that it’s the furthest thing from his mind. “I’m not thinking that far ahead. I’m still pretty young, so I have a lot more to do and experience in my career. Ask me again in 30 years!”

    Pack breakable dishes side-to-side. Many people assume plates and dishes should be stacked on top of each other to maximize space, but this actually creates an excessive amount of pressure that often results in cracks and breaks. To better ensure the safe transport of your dishware, be sure to pack plates on end, in a side-to-side arrangement.

    Load large items first. When it comes to loading a moving truck, having a packing strategy ahead of time can help you maximize space. If possible, load furniture and other large items first—you’ll have more freedom to incorporate smaller boxes and items into the packing arrangement. Also, by doing most of the heavy lifting at the beginning of the day, you’ll be less likely to experience fatigue later on.

    Choose an indoor storage unit. If you plan to temporarily stow items at a storage facility, it’s best to go with an indoor unit rather than an outdoor one. Even if it means a longer walk from the truck to the unit, an indoor storage unit will provide maximum protection against rodents and outdoor elements.

    SALINAS — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re preparing a move, you’ll first want to plan how you are packing before you begin. Today, we’re in Salinas with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pete Poulos of Poulos Moving System to learn three moving tips.

    Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pete Poulos: So, the next day on your moving day – and you’re looking to pack your plates, which way do you pack them? Do you pack them horizontally, or vertically? The answer is vertically. Reason being is, when you pack your plates horizontally, you allow a small pressure point on the plate to crack it, as opposed to vertically, where you have all this surface area to provide strength and protection, not allowing the plate to break.

    Also, when you are loading your truck, try to load all the furniture first. Of course, you won’t be able to do that – we can’t do that. But, few make a conscience decision to loading all the hard stuff in the beginning of the day, and you’re left with easier boxes to load at the end of the day. Everything’s worked out well.

    If, when you are looking to move into a temporary storage situation in a storage facility, choose the indoor storage unit, as opposed to the outdoor storage unit. It will be a longer walk from the truck to the storage unit, but the indoor storage unit provides protection against rodents and the outdoor elements and dust, as opposed to the outdoor storage unit.
