Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is essential for any business, but it’s even more important for remodeling contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Penny Pinching Construction & Remodeling, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: focus all its efforts on creating living spaces that are as practically functional as they are aesthetically pleasing. “Too often, contractors try to cut corners with things like materials and fixtures, which results in final products that look great but don’t perform well,” explains owner Rick Gudgel. “I realize that the functional aspects of a home are just as essential as its visual appeal, and that’s why I make sure to provide high quality at every level.”

Penny Pinching Construction & Remodeling has been providing construction services for residential and commercial clients throughout Napa County since 1998. The company’s diverse capabilities allow it to handle every aspect of the remodeling and rebuilding process, from plumbing work to finish carpentry.

Unlike contracting firms that lack the experience to effectively deal with unexpected issues, Penny Pinching Construction & Remodeling takes a proactive approach to each project that includes planning ahead for such situations. “I do my best to avoid surprises, and at the very least I’m always prepared in the event of one,” affirms Mr. Gudgel. “I never know what might be on the other side of a wall, so I always include some wiggle room in my estimated budget and timeframe.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Penny Pinching Construction & Remodeling is its ability to successfully achieve the vision of each individual client. “Unique isn’t a problem for me,” says Mr. Gudgel. “I enjoy the challenge of tackling a difficult or unusual project and figuring out how to make it work and look the way the client wants.”

Industry Info

Increase the value of your home through a well-planned, well-executed remodeling project. Not all remodeling projects are automatically good investments, so if you’re planning to fix up your kitchen, bathroom or living room, it’s important to use caution and make the most out of your money. Consider the following tips:

  • In terms of value, a new kitchen is one of the best remodeling investments you can make. Most sources agree that you can recoup 60 to 120 percent of your money if you make smart decisions on your kitchen remodel. Don’t go overboard—keep your new kitchen in line with the style and value of the rest of the house.
  • New bathrooms are also a wise remodeling investment, especially if your home only has one bathroom. You don’t need a lot of extra room to add a bathroom—even a half-bath is a smart move. Think about extra rooms or underused spaces, including closets and under-stairs areas. Plan for at least 18 square feet for a half-bath, or at least 30 square feet if you want a full bathroom with a shower. A bathroom with a bathtub will require a minimum of 35 square feet. Choose nice (but not overpriced) accessories and décor.
  • If you’re planning to sell your home within the next five years, keep potential buyers in mind when making remodeling and style decisions. Look for tasteful, cost-appropriate choices that will cater to the widest variety of buyers. A fresh coat of paint makes a big difference. Choosing colors with wider appeal and low- or no-VOC paints can be big selling points.
  • Replace old appliances with new, energy-efficient models. Energy Star products are recognized for their efficiency, which is good for the environment and better for your bottom line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will my project take to complete?

A: It depends on a lot of factors, but once I evaluate the scope of your project, I can give you a high and low estimate of how long it’s going to take.

Q: Can you help me pick out fixtures and appliances?

A: Certainly. I can steer you toward quality products that won’t put you outside of your budget.

Q: Do you make allowances for unexpected issues?

A: Over the years, I’ve found the best policy is to expect the unexpected. Too often, I’ve started a job and found issues with dry rot, termites and other things that delay the timeframe. That’s why I include allowances for unforeseen circumstances in every estimate.

Q: Can I stay in my home while it’s being remodeled?

A: Yes, but you should make sure you’re mentally prepared for a challenging experience. Living in a construction zone can be stressful—even though I clean up every day, there’s still going to be dust and your house will constantly be in a state that you’re not used to. As long as you’re prepared for these things, you can live in your house while it’s being remodeled.

That Rick and Jay go above and beyond, they are just really wonderful and very understanding. They talk to you with absolute expertise or they can dumb it down for you. They take the time to explain things to you in ways that you can understand, not just in regular language.

We had a very unusual case, because of the Napa fires. They not only guided us through permit issues and through insurance issues, they have stuck with us through everything. They have been absolutely invaluable.
