Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for moving companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Pedro’s Moving Services, Inc., the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take an honest approach to every job that’s designed to make the moving process go as smoothly as possible. “Even though we charge by the hour, we work very quickly and are ready to go as soon as we get to a customer’s house,” explains owner Pedro Hermosillo. “We know exactly what it takes to get the job done safely and correctly.”

Pedro’s Moving Services has been handling residential and commercial moving projects for clients throughout the Greater Bay Area since 2007. The company takes a full-service approach to moving that includes everything from packing and unpacking to home and office organization, and it also has the capabilities to load and unload customers’ portable moving containers.

Unlike less experienced moving companies that constantly strive to maximize their workload volume and often overbook themselves in the process, Pedro’s Moving Services only takes on one job at a time to ensure it will be onsite the day of each customer’s move. “It’s not uncommon for movers to overbook and then drop the less lucrative clients just prior to their moves, which is wrong and not very smart,” says Mr. Hermosillo. “This is a word-of-mouth business, so if a company gets a bad reputation, everybody knows it. That’s why we do every job right the first time and treat our customers with respect.”

To further differentiate itself from its competition, Pedro’s Moving Services makes sure all its moving trucks are equipped with cordless drills and other useful tools so its movers can quickly assemble and reassemble furniture if necessary. “Our trucks are fully loaded with all the materials needed to safely transport our customers’ belongings,” confirms Mr. Hermosillo. “They really appreciate how prepared we are, and they know that if anything goes wrong, we’ll be able to fix it immediately.”

Industry Info
If you’re hiring a moving company to handle your move, leave the heavy lifting to its employees.

Some people think they can save some money and speed up the process by helping with their moving projects, but according to Pedro Hermosillo, owner of Pedro’s Moving Services, Inc. in San Francisco, that’s not always the case. “For example, if you insist on helping and your moving company’s insurance doesn’t cover damages or injuries, you’ll be held liable if something breaks or someone gets injured,” he explains. “Also, mover’s insurance only covers damage to items that have been packed by the moving company. You can save money by packing everything yourself, but if something breaks, the insurance won’t cover it.” The best option is to pack durable items (books, clothes) yourself and leave breakables like dishes and furniture for the movers.

Mr. Hermosillo also recommends personally packing and transporting small valuables or things you may need on the actual day of the move. “You should take items like purses and credit cards with you,” he says. “Even if you completely trust your moving company, it’s easy to lose small items amidst all the packing material. When you arrive at your new place, the last thing you want to do is search through a bunch of boxes to find your credit cards.”

When your moving company performs the initial estimate for your project, you might be tempted to leave items off the inventory list or not mention certain location traits of your home in an effort to save money, but Mr. Hermosillo says practices like these are bad ideas. “By making sure the estimate is correct from the very beginning, you’ll ensure you have no surprises when the bill comes. Your moving company will arrive with the right amount of crew members and all the necessary packing materials, which will save time and money for both parties.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you charge by the job or by the hour?

A: We charge by the hour, but we move as fast as possible while still ensuring the safety of our customers’ belongings. Our employees are very experienced, so we can usually accomplish in four hours what other companies can accomplish in five.

Q: Are your estimates accurate?

A: Yes. We add some extra time to each estimate to ensure we don’t end up overcharging. Of course, if we get a job done sooner, the customer will pay less. Our final invoices are almost always less than the estimates.

Q: Do you add extra charges for things like mileage?

A: No, we don’t have any hidden fees. We even lend out wardrobe boxes at no extra charge. The only thing we charge extra for is packing materials.

Q: Do you charge for shrink wrap?

A: No, shrink wrapping is complimentary with your move.

Q: Do I have to get a parking permit for my moving project or will you handle that?

A: Getting a parking permit is your responsibility. You can usually obtain one at your local police station.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Pedro Hermosillo

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Pedro Hermosillo: Self-Made Mover

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — Like many business owners in the moving industry, Pedro Hermosillo started out small, delivering furniture to local craigslist customers out of his pickup truck. “It was just something I started doing on the side to make extra money—I would move a couch here and a mattress there when I wasn’t working my regular job as a day porter at a high-rise building,” he recounts. “As time went on, people started referring me to their friends, and pretty soon I was getting so many calls that I quit my job and purchased a bigger truck.”

Today, as owner of Pedro’s Moving Services, Inc., Pedro says one of his favorite parts of his job is receiving positive feedback from customers. “It’s music to my ears when I hear from a customer that we provided a great experience. Running a business can be challenging and at times overwhelming, but I get a lot of satisfaction from doing quality work that makes our customers happy.”

Born in Mexico, Pedro came to the United States at a young age and grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco. Still a resident of the City by the Bay (where he lives with his wife, Andrea, and their five children), he says he appreciates its open-minded atmosphere. “There aren’t many moving companies with a distinctly Latino name, which is something that might be perceived negatively in other areas of the country. Here in San Francisco, however, people don’t think twice about it, which speaks to the diversity of the population and the progressive mindset of the area.”

Outside of work, Pedro spends much of his time pursuing outdoor activities with his family. “We love being outdoors and take every opportunity to go camping, fishing or jet skiing at a nearby lake,” he affirms. Additionally, as a loyal fan of the San Francisco Giants, Pedro is a regular attendee at AT&T Park during baseball season.

In reference to a personal philosophy, Pedro says having a positive, hardworking attitude is the key to achieving success. “When I first came to the U.S., I learned pretty quickly that in order to succeed, I needed to have a strong work ethic and a good attitude. That’s why I’ve always tried to keep a smile on my face and work hard at anything that comes my way.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Pedro says he’d take some time to relax and go fishing. “I’d also like to do some traveling. I haven’t seen much of the U.S., or even my home country of Mexico, so I’d definitely take the opportunity to do some exploring.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Playa Azul in San Francisco.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?
A: The 4th of July.

Q: If you could visit any country, where would you go?
A: Ireland. I think the Irish people and I come from a similar background—we’re hard workers who came to the United States to make better lives for ourselves.

Q: What were you most known for in high school?
A: I was the class clown.

Q: Who makes you laugh?
A: George Lopez.

Q: Who’s your favorite movie monster?
A: King Kong.

  • Labeling Your Moving Boxes

SAN FRANCISCO — Packing for a move may seem like a simple task, but there are some important guidelines you should always follow. In addition to using smart packing procedures (making sure not to overfill large boxes, for example), another crucial aspect of packing is labeling your boxes.

When labeling a moving box, the first thing to consider is its intended destination. The last thing you want after an arduous move is to find out all your cookware ended up in the corner of your garage, so be sure to denote which area of the house each box is to be placed. This will eliminate any guesswork for your movers and enable them to work more accurately and efficiently.

Besides labeling boxes by room, it’s also important to clearly label all boxes that contain fragile or breakable items. Many people simply mark these boxes with a felt-tipped pen, but an even better way to ensure your label gets seen is to use brightly colored stickers. When your movers know there’s something breakable inside the box, they’ll take extra precautions to prevent breakage.

  • Tips for a More Efficient Move

SAN FRANCISCO — Let’s face it: moving is never easy. From packing boxes to filling out “change of address” forms, it’s an enterprise that involves numerous details and unforeseen complications. However, when preparing for a move, there are plenty of simple steps you can take to make the process more efficient. Here are a few:

    • Prior to moving day, take apart furniture and other items that need to be disassembled for transport. This will leave one less step for the movers to deal with.

    •  Take any items that aren’t going in boxes and put them on one side of the room. This will help eliminate confusion about what is and isn’t being boxed.

    •  When scheduling your move, consider local traffic patterns. By planning for the actual conveyance to take place during low traffic times, you can save additional time and hassle.

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re packing for a big move, remember that it’s one of the few times when it’s best to think inside the box. Today we’re in San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Pedro Hermosillo of Pedro’s Moving Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Pedro Hermosillo: Hi there. This is an example of how to label your boxes for your move. It’ll make life a lot easier when coming and getting your stuff into your new house. First of all, you just want to label all your boxes, room by room. Kitchen. All the boxes that are coming to the kitchen from your old place will definitely have to go to your new place in the kitchen. You don’t want the kitchen stuff to end up in the garage. So, in this case, all – every box, mine or any box that you get, please label either on top, on the side. Kitchen, kitchen items. That way everything goes to the kitchen.

Living room stuff. Label everything living room stuff. That way it’s easier for the movers to know where each box will end up at the new location. If you have boxes that are fragile, you have some stuff – breakable stuff inside a box – you want to make sure you either get stickers or mark fragile all over the box. That way – on every box on the top or the bottom – that way the movers know that there is something breakable inside the box. And we’ll take extra precaution, extra care of that box.

We have different sizes of boxes, you know, for either – we have small. You might – you have to use the small box for books. You don’t want to use the medium or large box to overfill with books. A large box with books is around 150 lbs. So, that box, when somebody grabs it, it’ll break apart. So, make sure you – all the books, heavy items, you put them in a small box. You don’t want to overfill a big box where even a mover can’t lift 200 lbs. of stuff and the box will break.
