Dr. Parham Karbassi: Detour to Destiny
By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
MARTINEZ — When asked what led him to a career in dentistry, Dr. Parham Karbassi says it was actually a detour from his intended destination. “I originally planned on going into the medical field,” he explains. “However, after a short time working as an emergency room assistant, I decided it wasn’t for me and opted to switch gears. I applied to a dental office, was hired and started working as a dental assistant, which I enjoyed very much. About four years later, I became a dentist myself.”
Today, after almost two decades of professional practice, Dr. Karbassi says his favorite part of his job is making his patients smile. “I just enjoy having satisfied patients. I get a lot of fulfillment from keeping their teeth healthy and giving them beautiful smiles.”
A resident of Oakland, Dr. Karbassi spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I enjoy golfing, playing tennis and working out,” he says. “I also like reading, as well as fixing and restoring old cars.” In addition to his personal hobbies, Dr. Karbassi enjoys spending time with his wife, Ramona, and their three children. “As a family, we do a lot of outdoor activities like skiing and hiking. We also like to travel—we take a trip to Europe almost every year.”
In his life and career, Dr. Karbassi believes in maintaining a positive mindset. “I’m a big proponent of staying optimistic when life gives you challenges,” he affirms. “For example, even after my plans to go into the medical field fell through, rather than give up, I kept a positive mindset and reassessed my options. That led me to the dental field, which turned out to be great. So, even if the road you started down doesn’t lead where you thought it would, you can always take a detour to get where you want to be.”
When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Dr. Karbassi says he’d catch up on his reading. “I love to read all kinds of books but I rarely have time for it, so I’d probably pick up a book and start reading.”
