Comparative Summary

Brothers Mark and Brian Edwards and their partner, David Bryant, are the inventors of the Sun Tunnel, a way to route natural daylight into inaccessible locations in a home (such as closets and baths), and the Fan-Attic, a solar-powered attic ventilation system. After Velux USA bought the Sun Tunnel from the partners in 2002, they founded Nulight Solutions, Inc. to sell and install Sun Tunnels, Fan-Attics and Velux skylights in the Bay Area.

Velux is one of the premier skylight manufacturers in the world. Highly praised by architects for their low-profile design that doesn’t disrupt rooflines, Velux skylights come with a variety of blinds that can be used to control the amount of sunlight that enters a room. Triple paned and Energy Star rated, the skylights can be installed with electric blinds and venting that can be remote controlled for installations that are out of reach.

Sun Tunnels are an energy-efficient way to illuminate closets, laundry rooms, hallways, and second bathrooms. From the inside, a Sun Tunnel looks like a recessed lighting fixture, but its flexible tubing bends sunlight around attic obstructions and brings natural light to hard-to-reach areas. With its optional light kit, Sun Tunnels also work when the sun goes down.

NuLight Solutions also manufactures and markets the Fan-Attic, a solar-powered ventilation system that quietly increases airflow through attic spaces, helping to cool houses and extend the life of their roofs. The Fan-Attic is solar powered, so it doesn’t add to electricity bills and is a Green way to ventilate and cool a house. “The Fan-Attic is our baby, and we’re very proud of it,” says Mark Edwards. “It really makes a difference in a home and saves money on air conditioning costs.”

Industry Info

When installing a skylight or attic ventilation system, the first thing to look for is product quality. “Be cautious about new products that have just arrived on the market,” says Mark Edwards, co-owner of NuLight Solutions. “One common problem with inexpensive, imported products is their aluminum and steel are simply incompatible. They come in contact with each other and electrolysis occurs, which corrodes those parts and often results in a recall. You should buy products from people who’ve been in the industry for a while.”

When installing solar powered devices, assembly and manufacturing quality is critical to the product’s lifespan. “Q-Cell brand solar panels are some of the best,” says Mr. Edwards. “Other solutions might be less expensive, but they aren’t comparable. Solar cells need to be in perfect alignment. If you look at the cells, you should be able to see nice, straight lines. If an assembly is rushed, they don’t line up, and over time the variance can cause wear at different rates, reducing efficiency and product life.”

When asked for a skylight maintenance tip, Mr. Edwards recommends using Rain-X. “It’s made for your car windshield, but it works great on skylights and the solar panels on ventilation fans. It keeps them clean and operating at optimum capacity, and it prevents dirt and bird droppings from sticking to the glass.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the benefits of natural light?

A: Natural light is the most environmentally friendly way to illuminate a building. It saves on energy costs by using the sun’s light, and it can be very aesthetically pleasing and make a room feel bigger. It also has a positive effect on people within a building. Natural light has been known to have a positive effect on a person’s mood, and light therapy is a treatment for depression. A New England Journal of Medicine study has shown that students who live and study in natural light have higher test scores, and Wal-Mart did a study that showed a workplace with natural light had more productive workers and customers who purchased more merchandise.

Q: Do you make your own skylights?

A: We used to, but we sold our manufacturing arm to Velux, the largest manufacturer of skylights in the world. We now exclusively sell Velux skylights and Sun Tunnels. However, we still manufacture the Fan-Attic.

Q: What’s a Sun Tunnel?

A: A Sun Tunnel is a flexible tube that bends light from an attic skylight around obstructions and brings it to hard-to-reach areas like closets, second bathrooms and laundry rooms. It also has an optional light kit to work as a lighting fixture after dark. There’s also a rigid version of the Sun Tunnel, which we often recommend for installation on northern and eastern exposures.

Q: How long does it take to install a Sun Tunnel?

A: It depends on the type of roof. One of our experienced professionals can usually install a Sun Tunnel in about one hour on a standard composition roof. Installing one on a tiled roof takes a bit longer.

Q: Can your skylights and Sun Tunnels be installed on any roof?

A: Yes. We’re one of the few companies that offer solutions for all roofs.

Q: What’s a Fan-Attic and what does it do?

A: The Fan-Attic is a solar powered attic ventilation system. As an ‘active’ attic ventilation system, the Fan-Attic provides more effective ventilation than ‘passive’ systems, such as turbine vents. Since the Fan-Attic is solar powered, there are no wires to attach and no electricity is required to run it.

Q: Why is attic ventilation important?

A: Heat and moisture affect your roofing materials all year. In summer, built-up attic heat migrates into your living area, heats up the air in your air conditioning ducts, and makes the air conditioner work harder to cool your home. Adding a Fan-Attic solar ventilation system to your roof reduces the operating time of your air-conditioner, saves on power use and helps the environment. In winter, moisture from inside the house can enter the attic. Without proper ventilation, excess moisture promotes mold and mildew, can saturate insulation, and can freeze on the underside of your roofing material. A Fan-Attic ventilates this air before it has a chance to condense inside your attic, extending the life of your roof.

Q: Is the Fan-Attic difficult to install?

A: A skilled professional can install the Fan-Attic on an asphalt composition roof in about 30 minutes. For other roofs, we highly recommend you hire a qualified Fan-Attic dealer or roofing professional.

Q: Does the Fan-Attic make a lot of noise?

A: The Fan-Attic is extremely quiet. The solar cell provides power to a DC motor without the humming sound associated with AC motors, which are used on electric attic fans.

Q: What’s the life expectancy of the Fan-Attic’s solar panel?

A: Every Fan-Attic features a state-of-the-art solar panel and is designed to last for more than 20 years. It’s backed by a 20-year limited warranty—one of the strongest in the industry.

Q: Is a building permit required to install the Fan-Attic?

A: Not usually, but you should check with your local building codes just in case.

Q: Is additional wiring required?

A: No. The Fan-Attic works right out of the box.

Q: Can the black fan housing be painted to match the roof shingles?

A: Yes. We recommend you prime the housing with an acrylic paint. Don’t apply any paint to the solar panel.

Q: Can I replace my existing static or turbine vents with the Fan-Attic?

A: Yes. In most cases, the Fan-Attic will easily and directly replace existing vents with little or no additional roof cutting.

Q: Will the Fan-Attic run after dark?

A: The Fan-Attic doesn’t run after the sun goes down, but since it’s already cooled your attic during the daylight hours, the residual cooling effect lasts well into the evening.

Mark Edwards: Reaching for the Sky

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

CAMPBELL — Few people can say they’ve competed in weightlifting at the professional level, and even fewer can say they helped develop a game-changing innovation in the home improvement field. However, Mark Edwards can lay claim to both of these achievements. It all started when he left his job in skylight manufacturing to pursue a very different career. “In the early ’80s, I decided to go into competitive power lifting,” he remembers. “I won third place for my weight class in the Northern California division of the Mr. USA competition, and I ended up opening a gym with a famous heart surgeon.”

Despite these promising beginnings, Mark’s weightlifting career was cut short by a debilitating injury. “I used to do a lot of really heavy lifting with my legs,” he explains. “Since I had very large trapezius muscles, it caused the bar to sit too high on my neck, which, over time, crushed the cervical vertebrae and impinged the nerve holes, ultimately leaving me paralyzed.” Thankfully, Mark was able to make a full, though gradual, recovery. “It took two years of painful physical therapy, but eventually I was able to be 100 percent rehabilitated,” he says. “Obviously, I’m not competing anymore, but I’m at least myself again and can still work out, which I consider a true medical miracle.”

A few years after recovering from his injury, Mark rejoined his brother in the skylight business, where together they developed a ground-breaking technology known as the “sun tunnel.” “The sun tunnel is a skylight that captures light at the roof and channels it into the home through a tubular shaft,” he explains. “What’s really special about this design is that it sidesteps a lot of the structural work that was once required for skylight installation. Today, you can find sun tunnels in homes all over the country.” After selling their design to a major manufacturer, Mark and his brother founded Nulight Solutions, Inc., which handles the installation of skylights and other roof-based products.

A resident of Los Gatos, Mark expresses an appreciation for life in the Bay Area. “I’ve received offers to work for companies all over the country, but I’ve chosen to stay here, not least because of the people and the weather. Not only are the people here great to work with, but with all the sunshine we get, it’s the perfect place to be in the skylight business.”

Outside of work, Mark engages in a variety of pastimes, including making improvements to his historic home estate. “I actually live in a castle,” he explains. “It was built in the 1930s and designed by Julia Morgan, who also designed Hearst Castle. It was in pretty rough condition when I purchased it a few years ago, so my girlfriend, Lisa, and I are in the process of restoring and refurbishing it.” Mark also enjoys working out at his gym and participating in outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking.

In his life and career, Mark espouses the residual benefits of treating others with kindness and respect. “The biggest thing I’ve learned over the years is that it pays to be a nice guy,” he affirms. “It’s always done me right, as I’ve found that people tend to reciprocate the kindness that’s been paid to them. I think that’s why I have so many people who are dedicated to me and to getting the job done.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Mark says retirement is the furthest thing from his mind. “I really enjoy being an entrepreneur—right now, I’m actually in charge of five different corporations. I could probably retire now if I wanted to, but I’d rather keep doing what I’m doing for as long as I can.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: I’m a big Bay Area sports guy, so I like the 49ers, Warriors, Sharks, Earthquakes and any other local team.

Q: Did you play any sports in high school?
A: I played football.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Cars and rare artifacts.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?
A: Chocolate.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Probably Costa Rica, because I have friends there.

  • Innovations in Solar Attic Fan and Skylight Technology

CAMPBELL — When it comes to skylights and other roof-based applications, there are several innovative products available to today’s consumers. In addition to increasing comfort and aesthetics in the home, many of these cutting-edge products incorporate solar technology, which represents an additional improvement to home energy efficiency. Here are two such products:

    Solar-powered skylights
For those looking for a Green alternative to conventional skylights, a solar-powered, fresh air skylight may be just the thing. In addition to improving energy efficiency, this product is equipped with a rain sensor that prompts the skylight to close automatically in the event of a shower. Even better, solar-powered skylights currently qualify for a 30 percent rebate, which, when applied, equates the cost to that of a fixed skylight installation. So, it’s a great option if you want to bring more natural light and fresh air into your home without increasing your energy costs.

    Solar-powered attic fans
Another product that can improve the comfort of your home is a solar-powered attic ventilation fan. The design is simple: the harder the sun beats down on your roof, the faster the fan blades spin, which creates more airflow to exhaust the hot air from your attic. In addition to keeping your home cool without increasing your energy bills, the improved ventilation provided by a solar-powered attic fan can help extend the life of your roof, making it well worth the initial investment.

  • Video: Sun Tunnel Skylight Technology

    Complete Video Transcription:

CAMPBELL — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re planning to install a skylight, you’ll want to know about the benefits of sun tunnel technology. Today we’re in Campbell with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mark Edwards of Nulight Solutions, Inc. to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Mark Edwards: If you’re looking to bring natural light into your home, the Velux Sun Tunnel is the answer. It’s a flexible tube which allows it to go around obstructions in your attic. It gives you a very nice, diffused light unlike a clear skylight which gives you a beam of light that we call hot spots. This product you will never have a hot spot. It’s always a nice, diffused soft white light.

We also have a light kit that mounts up in the ceiling. If you’re in a small bathroom, sometimes you don’t have a lot of room up there and the light is right in the middle. Well, we can take that light out and substitute it for the sun tunnel, bringing you natural light day in and day out, not having to turn lights on. You can have plants in your bathroom. Velux has done a wonderful job making this product even better. And it is a metal flashing with an injection molded dome that’s ten times stronger than glass and comes with a very nice ten year warranty.
