Industry Info

Learn about roofing options before you choose a contractor. Whether replacing a roof or planning a new construction project, most homeowners have a basic idea of how they’d like their house to look. Changing roofing material can dramatically change the look of a house or business, but some people feel it’s not worth extra money for a nicer roof if it’s not visible to others.

Budget constraints may be a major consideration when changing or installing a roof. Composition (asphalt or fiberglass shingles) products are generally the least expensive. Tile options follow, and shake (wood shingles) products are usually the most expensive.

Consider how often access to a roof is needed. Properties with solar panels, HVAC or other roof accessories that occasionally need maintenance will need roofing that can support someone walking on it. Composition is the easiest to walk on without damaging the roofing material, but tile and shake can be walked on if installed properly.

Other questions to ask yourself when choosing roofing material:

• What do you want your house to look like?
• How long are you planning to live in the house?
• How much of the roof can be seen?

Before investing in re-roofing a house or other property, pre-qualify and choose a professional roofing contractor. Here are some guidelines to help navigate which roofer is best for a project:

• Ask the contractor to explain their project supervision and quality control procedures. Ask the name of the person in charge of the project and determine the number of workers required and the estimated project completion time.
• Verify that the contractor has a valid contractor’s license and is bonded.
• Ask about a permanent business office location, phone/fax number, tax identification number, and business license where required. Communication by telephone or email should be available throughout the project.
• Make sure the company provides its employees with the proper work and safety training and has liability and workers’ compensation insurance in place.
• Make sure the roofing contractor is financially stable.
• Ask to see examples of previous projects or a list of references.
• Request a detailed, written proposal and review it for a complete description of the work and specifications, including estimated project start and end dates and payment procedures.
• Make sure the contractor is a licensed and approved applicator by the manufacturers for the roofing materials chosen.
• Contact the California Contractors License Board to check if there are any previous complaints filed against the roofing contractor.
• Find out what warranties the company offers before signing any contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long do tile roofs last?

A: In many cases, tile, clay and cement roofs can outlast the buildings they protect.

Q: What’s the advantage of tile roofing materials versus asphalt?

A: Besides the superior appearance of tiles over asphalt, tiles offer long-term cost savings, perform well under all weather conditions, and are processed using environmentally-friendly manufacturing techniques.

Q: How do I know if I need a new roof?

A: We can inspect a roof to determine if there are missing, cracked or curling shingles, rotting wood, stains on interior walls or ceilings, or leaking water after heavy rains. Any of these problems can indicate a roof replacement may be necessary.

Q: What are the safety procedures for workers on a roof?

A: We’re fully insured and bonded. All our employees are trained in comprehensive safety procedures, and we can review those procedures with clients before a project begins.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Mike Creeden

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Mike Creeden: A Twofold Education

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

FREMONT — During his college years, when Mike Creeden wasn’t studying for his classes, he could often be found working on a rooftop. What he didn’t realize was that both activities were preparing him for his future career. “While earning my degree in business administration, I worked for my uncle’s roofing business on the side,” he remembers. “After I finished college, my uncle asked me to run his company for him. It was the best opportunity I had at the time, and between my college degree and my roofing experience, I was qualified for the job, so I took it.”

Five years later, in 1975, Mike decided it was time to strike out on his own and founded Marco Roofing. Today, after more than four decades in business, Mike says his favorite part of his job is the customer interaction. “I enjoy meeting new people and working with them to achieve their goals. It’s very satisfying to see my clients happy at the end of their jobs.”

A resident of Pleasanton (where he lives with his wife, Lynette), Mike spends his time outside of work on a variety of active pastimes. “I have a Harley-Davidson that I ride all over the western United States,” he details. “I also play golf regularly and enjoy working in my garden.” When he’s not engaged in one of his personal hobbies, Mike enjoys spending time with family. “Lynette and I have two children and six grandchildren, so family is a big part of our lives.”

After nearly a half-century in the roofing business, Mike reflects on the core value of his career. “To me, being a roofer is primarily an opportunity to help people,” he affirms. “The same goes for any job in the service industry. It doesn’t matter if you’re a plumber, an electrician or a swimming pool technician—at the end of the day, the goal is to help someone in need. That’s why I’ve always put my clients first and made a priority of meeting their needs.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Mike says he’d spend more time on his hobbies…and maybe add a few more. “I would play more golf, ride my Harley more often and do some more traveling. I’d also probably try my hand at some new things. For instance, I’d like to get better at cooking.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: Peru. I’ve always wanted to see Machu Picchu.

Q: What’s your favorite book?

A: “The Light and the Glory” by Peter Marshall.

Q: What kinds of music do you like?

A: Country and jazz.

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: Chocolate chip cookies.

Q: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A: When I turned 50, my wife surprised me with a brand-new Harley-Davidson. It was the biggest shock ever!

  • The Proper Way to Walk on a Tile Roof

FREMONT — Whether to hang Christmas lights, wash upper-story windows or retrieve a wayward ball lost by the neighborhood kids, it’s inevitable that you’ll need to get up on your roof at some point. Naturally, safety should be your main priority when walking on your roof, but if you have a tile roof, there’s an additional concern to consider.

Due to the fragile nature of roofing tiles, if you aren’t careful, you can easily damage your roof while walking on it. To avoid this, you’ll need to employ the right technique. When you step on a roofing tile, you should step on the bottom part where it overlaps with another tile. Since this area of the tile has additional support from the underlying tile it overlaps, it’s less likely to break when you step on it. By sticking to this technique, you’ll minimize the chances of accidental damage when walking on your tile roof.

Expert video tip
  • Video: How to Walk on a Tile Roof

    Complete Video Transcription:

FREMONT — Host, Sarah Rutan: When getting up on a tile roof, knowing the correct way to walk on it can prevent damage to the roof tiles. To learn more, we’re in Fremont with Chad Creeden of Marco Roofing, speaking on behalf of Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mark Creeden.

Chad Creeden: Here in Northern California we have a lot of tile roofs. The best thing if you own a tile roof is to stay off the tile roof if at all possible. However, with Christmas lights, window washing, painting, and the occasional wayward ball from the kids up on the roof, it’s inevitable that you will eventually have to get up on the roof. When getting up on the roof, the best way to walk on the tiles is to walk on the bottom three inches of the tile where they’re overlapped. This will give you the least chance of breaking the tiles since if you step in the middle there’s nothing to support it, and that’s where they crack and break the easiest.

They are a excellent roofing company. They are probably not the least expensive. If you got 3-4 quotes from other companies, they wouldn't be near the lower end. High quality and a fair price, but not a bargain
