Comparative Summary

Few tree care companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality and Helpful Expertise®. Even fewer can also say they’ve been serving their communities for more than 30 years, but that’s exactly the case for Lewis Tree Service, Inc. “When our CEO, Nathan Lewis, became an ISA Certified arborist in 1985, there was a real need for knowledgeable tree workers in the area,” explains Operations Administrator Jamie Lafollette. “All these years later, taking care of trees is still what we’re all about. We’re dedicated to maintaining them and adding to the beauty of Santa Cruz.”

Lewis Tree Service provides a wide range of tree care services for residential and commercial clients throughout Santa Cruz County and beyond. The company has the training and equipment to handle everything from routine pruning and trimming to stump grinding and removal, and it utilizes its in-house crane to take on a variety of specialty projects.

Unlike tree care companies that lack personnel depth and documented industry expertise, Lewis Tree Service is proud to be one of the few companies in its area to be accredited by the Tree Care Industry Association. “Our knowledgeable staff of tree care professionals really sets us apart,” says Ms. Lafollette. “We really know what we’re doing. We keep up-to-date on industry standards and provide our technicians with constant training to ensure they’re well-educated on best practices.”

Ultimately, Ms. Lafollette sees Lewis Tree Service’s dedication to customer service as one of its most important attributes. “We’ve built our reputation on customer recommendations over the years, and that’s a direct result of our great service,” she says. “Most of our business comes from people who call us to prune their trees year after year, so it’s important that we make sure our customers are satisfied and want to keep coming back. The best way to do that is to hire and keep great employees, evaluate our services to find areas for improvement, and listen closely to our customers’ needs.”

Industry Info

Tree care is a dangerous business, so make sure you hire carefully to protect your property.

When homeowners hire contractors, cost is often their top priority. But experts suggest putting price lower on your list and instead considering the value that a good contractor provides.

This is especially important when it comes to hiring a tree care company. “Tree work is extremely dangerous, so you don’t want just anyone working on your property,” says Jamie Lafollette, operations administrator at Lewis Tree Service, Inc. in Santa Cruz. “Since this is a high-risk industry, it’s crucial to hire a company that knows what it’s doing and understands how to take care of your trees.”

Ms. Lafollette says some companies will offer excessive and often harsh pruning to customers who are looking to decrease the frequency of their trees’ pruning maintenance. “This practice generally backfires because the harder trees are pruned back, the more maintenance they require in the future to maintain that shape and size. Hiring a knowledgeable tree care company can save you money in the long run by reducing unnecessary tree pruning.”

Smart hiring basics

  • As with any contractor, make sure the tree care company you hire is licensed and insured. That way, you’ll be covered and have recourse if there’s a problem.
  • Look for a tree care company that has ISA Certified arborists on staff.
  • Talk to the tree care company about the services you need and ask them for suggestions and advice. Most good tree contractors won’t do certain things (such as tree topping) for the health and safety of the trees. If the company won’t provide the service you’re asking for or suggests a different route, ask them why. They should be able to explain their reasons in a way you can understand.
  • Get everything in writing, including services to be performed and any warranties or guarantees. Many tree care companies like to do minimal trimming for the health of the trees, but they often guarantee you’ll be happy with the work or they’ll come back and make it right.
  • Ask what the company will do to protect your yard, home and landscaping while they’re working.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you give me an estimate over the phone?
A: We prefer to send an arborist to your home so we know what type of equipment is needed, which will ultimately help us get you the best price.

Q: What should I do in an emergency situation?
A: We offer 24-hour emergency service. If you call our main line and no one answers, we have multiple cellphone numbers listed on that line, so someone can always help you in an emergency. It’s also a good idea to contact your homeowners insurance provider either right before or right after contacting us. Take photos of the event and document what happened so you can give that information to the insurance company.

Q: Do I need a permit to remove my tree?
A: Our certified arborists are well-versed in the permit requirements for each city and county, so once they review those and measure your tree, they’ll be able to give you an answer.

Q: Do you work with homeowners associations and multi-home properties?
A: Yes, we offer full-inventory services to HOAs and other properties. We can provide multi-year pruning plans, inventories and maps for your entire association so you can plan your long-term tree care costs.

Q: Do you offer crane services outside of tree work?
A: We offer a full range of crane services, from lifting HVAC units to moving beams for construction companies. Whatever needs to be lifted, we can lift it.

Q: Will you haul away my piles of brush?
A: We can send a crew with a truck and a chipper to chip brush for you. You can also rent one of our dumpsters and load it with brush, and then we can haul it away for you. That tends to be an economical solution for people who do a lot of yard work but still need help hauling away debris.

Q: What do you do with your wood mulch?
A: We offer free pickup and delivery of our wood mulch products. There’s more information about that on our website.

Mike Hernandez: An Outdoor Opportunity

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA CRUZ — Mike Hernandez has always loved being outdoors, so when he accepted an opportunity to give tree work a try, it was hardly going out on a limb. “One day, about a year out of high school, I ran into a family friend who worked in the tree service industry, and he asked me if I’d be interested in trying it,” he remembers. “I had worked a couple of other jobs by that point and learned that working indoors wasn’t for me, so tree service seemed like it might be a good fit. As it turns out, it was—I fell in love with it and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Today, as operations manager of Lewis Tree Service, Inc., Mike says he enjoys multiple aspects of his career. “I still enjoy working outside, but I also get a lot of satisfaction from seeing the jobs run smoothly. Additionally, I enjoy the camaraderie of working with the crew. It takes a little bit of effort from everyone to make the job go well, and it’s neat to be a part of that.”

A resident of Watsonville (where he lives with his wife, Sydney), Mike spends his time outside of work on a variety of pastimes. “I’m an avid cyclist,” he details. “I raced BMX for years, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve become interested in mountain biking as well. I’m also into vintage vehicles—I have a couple of motorcycles, as well as a 1974 Econoline van that I’m constantly working on. Sydney and I also enjoy going camping whenever we get a chance.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Mike espouses the importance of teamwork. “As the phrase goes, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work!’” he quotes. “That’s really big for me, especially being in an industry where pride and machismo can get in the way of productivity. I try to emphasize to our guys that we’re all on the same team, and the better they can work together, the easier everyone’s job is going to be.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Mike says he’d hit the road. “I used to go on a lot of road trips when I was younger, but it’s not as easy to get away these days. So, if I retired, I’d load up the van and travel the country with my wife, camping all along the way.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

A: Shogun Japanese Restaurant in Santa Cruz.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?

A: Definitely a night owl. During the week, I’m up early for work, but on weekends, I usually stay up way too late and sleep in.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?

A: Skydiving.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A: I’d probably do a tour of East Asia and visit countries like Thailand and Singapore.

Q: What was your favorite toy as a child?

A: Anything with two wheels. As a kid, I was always riding bikes—I guess not much has changed!

  • Why You Shouldn’t Over-Prune Your Trees

SANTA CRUZ — As tree service professionals, we’ll often have customers ask us to prune back their trees as much as possible. Naturally, they think this will maximize the length of time until their next pruning service. However, the reality is that over-pruning a tree can actually have the opposite effect and result in the need to prune sooner.

Wondering how this is possible? Consider this: Any action you take on a tree incites a reaction. When you over-prune, the tree’s reaction is to bush back out as quickly as possible. Why? Because it needs as much live foliage as possible for photosynthesis. This is especially true of young, healthy trees, which will grow back with vigor if over-pruned.

What’s worse, when you spark this kind of reaction in a tree, the accelerated rate of growth often results in limbs that are structurally weaker than they should be. So, not only will you have to prune again sooner, you’re potentially jeopardizing the health of your trees as well. For this reason, when having your trees pruned, it’s always best to follow a professional’s advice.

  • Video: The Downside of Over-Pruning

    Complete Video Transcription:

SANTA CRUZ — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you think pruning your trees back extra far will save you time and money, you might want to think twice. Today we’re in Santa Cruz with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Mike Hernandez of Lewis Tree Service to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Mike Hernandez: Over-pruning or excessive thinning of trees is a very common request that we get from customers on a regular basis. Whether it be for getting more light into a patio area, over a yard, size maintenance, or just because they think that if a tree is pruned harder that it will last longer before the next pruning is necessary when, in actuality, over-thinning or over-pruning a tree can lead to excess growth, decline in the health of your tree, or potentially poor structure which could lead to increased costs in the long term.
