Company Philosophy

"Our aim is to treat every customer exactly the way we'd want to be treated. Comparative Summary

Larsen Construction installs and replaces all types of doors and windows, including bay, bow, picture and garden windows, as well as French, patio and entry doors. The materials they use include wood, fiberglass, and vinyl. Mr. Larsen keeps prices low by stocking most major quality brands, direct from top manufacturers.

It’s all on display at Larsen Construction’s vast showroom. At over 3,000 square feet, it’s one of the largest in Northern California, according to owner Jim Larsen.

If you’re a Bay Area homeowner or business looking to replace windows or doors, that’s an enormous asset. There are no surprises. Unlike ordering from a catalog, you can actually see the product you plan to buy and try it out for yourself. That’s especially important for higher-end products, where quality workmanship can be difficult to explain, but easy to demonstrate.

Mr. Larsen started his company in 1992. With over a quarter-century of experience in the home-improvement business, he has built strong relationships with his network of customers and manufacturers. The guiding philosophy of Larsen Construction, however, is customer satisfaction. Because his company is neither small nor inordinately large, Mr. Larsen can field a large number of installation crews while retaining tight control over quality. He chooses those installers from among the best in the business and, as an incentive to good work, pays them above industry standards.

Mr. Larsen prides himself on his company’s willingness to “go the extra mile,” tending even to minute details that many companies ignore, overlook, or simply refuse to do. He remains involved in every project, overseeing it from beginning to end.

As a result, Larsen Construction derives fully a quarter of its business from referrals. That’s an extraordinarily high percentage, and one in which Mr. Larsen takes greater pride.

Industry Info

All windows and doors are not created equal. Whenever you buy a product for your home—furniture, refrigerator, TV, etc.—you have a choice among low, medium and high quality. Windows are no different.

Yet it might seem hard to justify spending a large amount on a high-end window, when you can buy one at a home improvement chain for less. Jim Larsen of Larsen Construction recommends visiting a showroom and seeing the difference for yourself.

“Chances are, you’ll see the difference. For example, some people try out a high-end Milgard window and they fall in love with the lock,” he says. “It’s arthritis approved—the first the time Arthritis Foundation has ever endorsed a locking system on a window. It seems like a small thing, but for some people it makes a huge difference.”

The same is true of doors, which can run anywhere from $100 at a home improvement chain to $5000 for a top-of-the-line model, says Mr. Larsen. While you certainly don’t want a product that will bust your budget, at the same time you shouldn’t blindly assume that high-end doors are overpriced, or that low-end ones are a good deal. Ask a salesperson to explain why the differences justify the price. Many people conclude that, over time, inferior products are no bargain because they don’t hold up well. Or perhaps you’ll end up feeling unsafe in your own home because you opted for an inferior exterior door. In which case you’ll almost certainly regret cutting corners.

When you’re pricing windows, also keep in mind that today’s new models will save you money on your fuel bills. Over time, they should pay for themselves—though your break-even point can vary widely, depending on the price you paid and the energy efficiency achieved.

Assume that the manufacturer’s warranty is the only one that’s binding, no matter what the sales representative tells you. The good news is that many top brands of windows offer a 20-year warranty on glass and a 10-year warranty on parts that are non-prorated and fully transferable should you sell your home—an additional bargaining tool for homeowners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What sets your company apart?

A: We’re not a great big company but we’re not a little company. We’re somewhere in the middle so, we can control the quality of our work. We have 15 crews in the field.

Q: I have no idea how to shop for windows. Where do I start?

A: I’ll take you through the showroom for a general overview. We’ll talk about which materials and brands are the longest lasting, which are most energy-efficient, how much they all cost—and whether they’re right for you. By the time we’re done, you’ll have a good general understanding of your options.

Q: Can I install my own windows?

A: I wouldn’t recommend it. People with good basic carpentry skills can probably install a window, but many people who do try end up calling me after their second or third window saying, “This is ridiculous. You’ve got to come help me.”

Q: Do I need triple-pane windows?

A: I don’t think it’s necessary in California. Triple pane is more for the Midwest, up in Wisconsin and Minnesota, where it drops below freezing.

Jim Larsen: Unstoppable

By James Florence, Staff Writer

HAYWARD – For some, the road to success is smoothly paved, but for others, it’s a path fraught with harrowing obstacles. For Jim Larsen, owner of Larsen Construction, it involved a veritable life-and-death struggle—one that, while leaving an indelible mark, also served as a catalyst toward a higher achievement.

It was in the midst of a burgeoning career as a window salesman that the unthinkable struck: Jim was diagnosed with cancer. The subsequent year of his life would consist of an excruciating treatment and recovery process, but even though he was physically out of commission, he didn’t just sit idly by. “While I was in the hospital, I started to put together a business plan,” he recounts. “I wanted to do something that hadn’t been done before, not only in combining the window and door industries, but also in creating a company that generated most of its business through customer referrals.”

As a window salesman, Jim found that customer referrals were difficult to come by, so he knew he needed to find a way to make them consistent for his business model to work. After much contemplation, he finally hit upon the crucial element. “I realized installation was the key,” he says. “Even if I had the greatest salespeople and office staff in the world, if I didn’t have quality installers, I wasn’t going to get the referrals.” With his newfound focus, he immediately set to assembling a team of expert installers.

Building a business from the ground up wasn’t easy, particularly in the wake of his medical ordeal, but Jim’s indomitable spirit proved equal to the task. “Since my hospital bills had created a significant financial setback, I had to start this business on a shoestring budget,” he explains. “Fortunately, I was able to connect with people who believed in what I was trying to do and were willing to invest in it.” Jim’s hard work and determination paid off, and so did his business model—Larsen Construction is still going strong nearly two decades later, and almost half of its business is produced by customer referrals.

In addition to his business, one of Jim’s great passions in life is traveling. Having been all over the European continent, he says he feels a particular affinity with the people of Italy. “They’re just so full of life. I like how dinner in Italy isn’t something you do quickly before moving on to the next thing—it’s an all-evening affair.” Jim also takes an annual trip to the Florida Keys, where he spends a week fishing on the flats. Yet as much as he enjoys relaxing, he also feels the need to maintain a livelihood. “I don’t think I’ll ever actually retire,” he says. “I’ll always want to be involved in something, even if it’s just part-time consulting.”

Looking back on his life and career and the obstacles he’s overcome along the way, Jim attributes his success to his positive outlook. “The cancer may have changed me physically, but I didn’t let it change who I was,” he says. “Some people who have been afflicted with cancer just give up on life, but it really comes down to a choice—you can sit and feel sorry for yourself, or you can wake up every morning to a new day and keep living your life.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Did you play any high school sports?
A: I played football—I was a halfback and linebacker.

Q: If you could speak any language fluently, which would you choose?
A: Italian, since I love to visit that country.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
A: Larsconi.

Q: What’s your favorite tree?

  • How to Shop for Windows

HAYWARD — When it comes to purchasing windows for your home, it should never be a snap decision. Windows are an integral part of any home, and an expensive one at that, so it’s essential to know what you want before you buy.

Choosing windows isn’t as simple as you might think, as there’s a lot of diversity in terms of brand, style and quality. In addition to the variety of brands on the market, most manufacturers offer different quality grades, usually ranging from high-end to medium and low. Typically, the main differences between these grades consist of frame thickness and sightline—high-end windows have thicker frames and more equal sightlines than lesser grades. The cost difference between a high-end window and a medium window is usually about 15 percent, so you have to decide how much of an investment you want to make.

To ensure you get the right windows for your home, you need to do your homework. Never purchase windows without going to a showroom and looking at them firsthand—catalog samples really don’t do justice to what you’re going to have in your home. Once you have visited a showroom, received the pertinent information and discussed your situation with a professional, you’ll be ready to make a good decision and investment for your home.

Expert video tip
  • Video: Choosing Windows For Your Home

    Complete Video Transcription:

HAYWARD — Host, Sarah Rutan: When shopping for windows, it’s important to first do your homework. So today we’re in Hayward with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jim Larsen of Larsen Construction to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jim Larsen: When you’re shopping for windows, you’re going to be spending quite a bit of money on the project depending on how many windows or whatever you are planning on doing. It’s up to the consumers to do the homework, do the leg work and find out what they want to get.

The biggest suggestion I can make is there is no one window that is “the best.” There are several brands on the market that have good windows. Usually with most of the major brands you’ll find that they make a high end, a medium and a low. The difference is usually that the high-end windows have a little thicker frame and they have an even sight line and the mediums to low-end windows usually have a 2 ¾ frame vs. a 3 ¼ frame and they have an uneven sight line. There are other things too but those are the major differences.

Usually the cost difference between a high-end to a medium is usually about 15% less, plus or minus. I think the best way to do this is come to either come to a showroom before you make a decision or come to showroom after you’ve gotten some estimates from some people that you think that you want to do business with.

My suggestion is never purchase windows without going to a showroom and looking at them. The little suitcase size windows that the salesmen carry really don’t do justice to what you are going to have in your home. So, once again, you the consumer have to do your homework and once you come to a showroom and have done your homework and get all of the information, I’m sure you will make a good decision and investment for your home.

Host, Sarah Rutan: Thank you to our Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Jim Larsen of Larsen Construction. I’m Sarah Rutan.

They do excellent quality work for a great price. They did exactly what I wanted, and I'm more than happy.

They came out when we agreed, they were responsive, and they informed me about the many options that were available within my budget. The biggest thing that really sets them apart is how they did the work on an older house that no other company wanted to touch. Jim listens to his customers, and there's really nothing he can't do.
