Company Philosophy

“We value our customers’ time as much as we value our own, so if we say we’ll start a job at a certain time, we’ll be there. We schedule every project to be completed on time. We also understand the comfort customers feel when they’re in their homes, so we work on houses as if they were our own.”

Comparative Summary

According to Kenneth Turnage II, owner of general contracting firm K2GC, the most common complaints about general contractors is they show up late and leave a mess. K2GC aims to overcome that reputation “one customer at a time,” he says.

The Antioch-based company’s contractors are prompt for all appointments—one piece of a larger corporate commitment to superior customer service, says Mr. Turnage. When customers call K2GC’s offices, someone nearly always answers the phones, and in the unlikely event they can’t, they return messages within two hours.

Mr. Turnage says K2GC puts in extra effort on behalf of its customers. Should someone incur losses in a fire, another company might simply help compile an itemized list, send an estimate and call the job done. But with their extensive insurance background, K2GC’s employees are able to patiently walk clients through the insurance process. “Whatever decisions you ultimately make,” says Mr. Turnage, “they’ll be well-informed and in your best interest.”

Ultimately, Mr. Turnage’s objective is to make customers feel like part of K2GC’s “family.” He works hard to earn customers’ trust, which he believes is the foundation of every long-standing customer relationship.

When work on a home is underway, K2GC takes abundant precautions to protect belongings from dust, debris and damage. Floors are masked and barriers are erected to block off sections of the house, and when the company leaves after a day’s work, it leaves the home absolutely clean and orderly.

All K2GC’s employees submit to background checks before being hired. Once cleared, they’re carefully trained to the company’s high standards of workmanship and service. As a result, Mr. Turnage says employee turnover is extremely low.

The company also offers complete design consultation for room additions, kitchens, bathrooms, and the like. ”We really emphasize personalized service,” says Mr. Turnage. If customers choose custom cabinetry, K2GC will bring a custom cabinetmaker to their home for a meeting. Every service is “customized to fit your desires and needs.”

Industry Info

In the construction industry, estimates without descriptions often have little value.

When getting estimates from different contractors for a home improvement project, make sure the quotes involve comparable time and quality, says Kenneth Turnage II of K2GC, an Antioch-based general contractor.

“A lot of contractors do lump sum estimates,” he says. “You’ll see ‘X amount for dry wall.’ The contract should specify precisely which walls or how many square feet. That way, you don’t hear later that ‘it wasn’t included in the estimate.’”

Mr. Turnage says your objective is to minimize or eliminate change orders, those pesky 11th-hour revisions to your contract that so often account for cost overruns. He warns there will occasionally be unforeseeable problems that’ll necessitate a change, “but there should be no reason for the contractor to charge significantly more.”

Mr. Turnage recommends you only use contractors with a physical business address as opposed to a post office box. Communicating with your contractor should be easy, and a lack of a physical address suggests otherwise. It may be they operate out of their home, and Mr. Turnage says that’s fine, but you should at least find out where it is. Pay a visit and see how the business is set up. “If it’s in disarray, that’s a direct indication of how they’ll treat your home.”

Confirm your contractor is licensed and insured, and that their workers’ compensation insurance is paid, says Mr. Turnage. Make sure the subcontractors are getting paid. And most of all, he says, trust your instincts. “If you’re leery about your contractor after a few appointments, you may want to stay away. Sixty percent of this job is communication; only 40 percent is the work itself. If you can’t communicate your expectations to your contractor, how will you ever get the outcome you want?”

Consider these environmentally friendly (and money-saving) energy tips.
• Monthly changing of air filters would result in approximately $100 per year savings
• Temperature setting reminders on a yearly basis
• Reducing wattage of light bulbs can result in additional savings
• By ensuring your caulking and weather stripping are working properly, you can cut your heating bills up to 10%.

Water damage prevention tips:
• Make sure sprinklers do not spray your homes
• Exterior grading needs to be sloped away from the home for water runoff
• Make sure foliage is not building up in your gutters and downspouts to avoid blockage issues from occurring

Fire prevention tips:
• Make sure there is no pest intrusion, which may result in the gnawing of wires
• Don’t overload circuits by using additional outlet devices
• Change range hood filters to eliminate grease build-up
• Clean your chimney on a regular basis to prevent soot build-up

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do you complete your projects on time?
A: “We have a very good history of completing projects on time. We make sure projects are scheduled properly and not started before materials are verified for arrival.”

Q: How do you find your subcontractors? Do you take bids?
A: “No, we don’t take bids. We’ve been using our subcontractors for many years—in some cases, more than 20. We know they’re good, and we know what we’re going to get, because we’ve already built a rapport.”

Q: Do you have a home maintenance program?
A: “Yes. We’ll come to a home once or twice a year, depending on which program you choose. We check all the angle stops, sinks and washing machine connections. We’ll go through all the neglected areas of your home that could potentially suffer long-term damage, like dry rot, which isn’t covered by insurance. If we see areas where water is penetrating, we’re able to bring them to the owner’s attention. Our goal is to help prevent any long-term costs due to unanticipated damage to the home.”

Q: Will I ever see my project manager?
A: “Yes. There’s a project manager assigned to every project. You’ll have their cell phone number, and you can always call our owner, Kenneth Turnage, if your needs aren’t being met.”
Q: What about getting a rental car?
A: “If you have coverage for one, we can help with that. We arrange pick-up and drop-offs for our customers’ convenience.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Kenny Turnage

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Kenny Turnage is a 29-year veteran of the construction industry and president of K2GC, a Diamond Certified company since 2007. He can be reached at (925) 754-5232 or by email.

Kenny Turnage: Restoration Man

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ANTIOCH – While he’s made a career of restoring homes damaged by fire and water, Kenny Turnage’s field of specialty was no coincidental development—in fact, it stemmed from a specific incident that occurred during his childhood. “When I was a kid, my grandparents’ house caught on fire and needed some restoration work,” he recounts. “My father was a building contractor, and he wasn’t about to let anybody else work on his parents’ home, so he became licensed to perform insurance-related construction work. Pretty soon, he was doing damage restoration on a regular basis.”

Kenny started working for his father at the age of 12, and he quickly became immersed in the damage restoration trade. “While other kids my age were out riding bikes or playing sports, I was shoveling ash in burnt-up houses,” he says. After spending 18 years working for the family business, Kenny decided to strike out on his own and founded K2GC in 2004.

Kenny says his favorite part of restoring damaged homes is improving them beyond their original condition. “With all the building code requirements nowadays, many houses we restore end up in better condition than they were before being damaged. Considering the emotional trauma that comes from losing a home, I find it very rewarding to return my customers’ houses in better shape than ever.”

Kenny is a lifelong resident of Antioch—his office is located a few blocks from the elementary school he attended as a kid, and he stays actively involved in his community by coaching youth sports. Additionally, some of his favorite activities outside of work include leisurely fishing trips and spending quality time with his daughters, Savanna and Serena. “My girls and I enjoy everything from going to Warriors games to doing jigsaw puzzles and having cooking contests,” he says. “We have a lot of fun together.”

As a business owner, Kenny says delivering on promises is the most important aspect of customer satisfaction. “It just boils down to following through with whatever you say you’re going to do, from returning phone calls and showing up to the job on time to delivering the final product on schedule and up to the customer’s expectations.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Kenny says he’d take an extended fishing trip in an exotic locale. “I’d charter a fishing boat in Cabo San Lucas and spend some more time on the open water. I’d let someone else be the captain and I’d be the deckhand—heck, I might even grow some dreadlocks while I’m at it!”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: The Oakland Raiders.

Q: What was your favorite cartoon as a child?
A: It’s a three-way tie between Spiderman, The Flintstones and Popeye.

Q: What’s your ideal hamburger?
A: I actually developed my own recipe—I call it the Kenny Burger. Just add ranch dressing, a handful of shredded cheese and a little Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef before making individual patties and cooking them up.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect memorabilia items. It doesn’t have to be anything specific—I just like collecting random stuff. In my office alone, I have a Darth Vader suit, a 3-D portrait of Elvis and an autographed Tom Brady jersey.

Q: What’s the most death-defying feat you’ve ever attempted?
A: Eating my mom’s cooking.

  • Improving Kitchen Fire Safety via Microwave Maintenance

ANTIOCH — Most homeowners aren’t aware that one of the leading causes of kitchen fires is over-range microwaves. All over-range microwaves have grease filters underneath, both to ensure proper ventilation and to capture fumes and grease particles. When these filters become clogged, they fail to perform effectively and can actually pose a fire hazard. Since the microwave is situated above the stove, if a flame rises while you’re cooking, it can catch a greasy filter on fire and lead to an extremely dangerous situation.

The good news is that over-range microwave filters are easy to maintain. If your microwave has a metallic filter, you can remove it and wash it in soapy water or in the dishwasher (make sure your filter is dishwasher-safe). Allow the filter to dry completely before putting it back. Charcoal filters, on the other hand, can’t be re-cleaned and should be replaced twice a year.

By taking these simple steps to maintain your over-range microwave, you can better ensure optimal fire safety in your kitchen.

  • Video: One Way to Prevent a Kitchen Fire

    Complete Video Transcription:

ANTIOCH —  Host, Sarah Rutan: More fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home and could be prevented with a little bit of maintenance. Today we’re in Antioch with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Kenneth Turnage of K2GC to learn one way that you can prevent a kitchen fire.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Kenneth Turnage: From doing fire damage for so many years , we’ve been able to identify some items that really cause more fires than any other thing. One of the leading causes for kitchen fires is the filter for the microwave range hood or the range hood. They are really easy to come out, they slide right out just by grabbing the little clip right here and you can just pop them right out. This is a clean one. When they are dirty, they are completely filled with grease and when they are over the stove, the fire is coming up, it catches the grease on fire and the next thing you know the entire kitchen is engulfed in flames.

These are really easy to maintain, you can buy them at your local hardware store, they will already have the sizes precut and ready to go in or if you want to with these metal ones, you can reclean them. Spray them down with 409 and run them through your dishwasher. Once they are done, you will want them to dry completely that way the grease doesn’t go back in and coagulate as soon as possible then you can put it right back in just by sliding it right into the slot and it is really that simple to do.
