Jim Darling, Owner

J & M Termite Control provides structural inspections, damage repairs and pest control services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Mountain View area. In addition to combating termite and wood pest infestations with fumigation and chemical treatments, the company can create inspection reports for real estate agents and property buyers/sellers.

Owner Jim Darling established J & M Termite Control in 1973 to offer prompt, reliable termite removal services to his community. Mr. Darling says he’s been able to maintain his business for so many years because of word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied homeowners and realtors. “Even though we’re a smaller company, our clients come back to us because they trust our expertise. Sometimes, larger termite and pest control firms don’t have the desire to cater to the real estate industry.”

J & M Termite Control’s employees are all licensed by the Structural Pest Control Board, which regulates industry practices such as infestation identification, inspection reports, estimates and bids, the use of chemical and mechanical eradication devices, and more.

Company Philosophy

"We've earned a reputation for being a termite company that can be counted on to provide outstanding service, and we aim to keep that reputation by staying committed to our ideals. Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for termite control companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For J & M Termite Control, the keys to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction are simple: take an old-fashioned business approach to each project and emphasize quality every step of the way. “We have a very strong work ethic, and it shines through in our services,” says owner Jim Darling. “Our clients really appreciate how helpful and patient we are when it comes to dealing with their termite problems.”

J & M Termite Control has been providing structural inspections, damage repairs, and pest control services for residential and commercial clients throughout the Mountain View area since 1973. The company uses fumigation, chemical, and microwave treatments to combat termite and wood pest infestations, and it can also create inspection reports for real estate agents and property buyers/ sellers.

Unlike less experienced termite control companies that take a “hands-off” approach to communicating with their customers, J & M Termite Control stays in constant contact with its clients so they have all the information they need to make smart decisions. “We treat each situation individually and help our clients understand the extent of their infestations so they can get a better idea of their options,” explains Mr. Darling. “Our goal is to help them find solutions that meet their needs and budgets, but we’re also honest about what will work and what won’t.”

Another distinguishing attribute of J & M Termite Control is its highly trained and experienced technicians, all of whom are directly supervised by Mr. Darling himself. “I’m in the field every day, so I often hear our customers talking about how wonderful our employees are,” he says. “They like the help and answers they get, and they always comment about how thorough we are.”

Industry Info

When it comes to preventing termite infestations, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. No one wants termites in their home or business, but do you know how to prevent an infestation from occurring in the first place? Termite extermination and fumigation can be expensive (and repairing termite damage can be even more costly), so prevention is your best option. The tips below will help you take the necessary steps to prevent termites from getting a foothold in your residence or commercial building.

  • Wood that touches the ground can lure an entire termite colony to take up residence. Make sure any wood supports, footings, deck supports and other wood surfaces attached to your home or property aren’t in direct contact with the ground. “A good way to keep termites away is by installing metal flashing around the base of fence posts,” says Jim Darling, owner of J & M Termite Control, Inc. in Mountain View.
  • Termites need a source of water to thrive, so fix leaky faucets, eliminate standing water, remove debris in gutters, and make sure there’s adequate drainage underneath and near your home.
  • Vegetation near buildings can create moist areas that encourage termites. Cut back brush and heavy growth, and keep leaves and other vegetation from piling up near the base of your home.
  • Keep firewood, building materials, scrap wood and other wooden materials away from the exterior of your home. Termites can easily travel from wood storage areas near homes into the structures themselves.
  • Remove dead trees and stumps from your yard. Decaying wood attracts termites, and they’ll look for new sources of food in close proximity.
  • Wood mulch provides a food and water source for termites, so use rubber mulch or stone near your home instead.
  • Use mesh, aggregates, concrete or plastic barriers to keep termites from penetrating your home’s foundation, pipes, piers and other contacts with the ground.
  • Have a termite control company apply a chemical barrier treatment around your home or business. “Many termite products have a residual effect for up to 10 years,” says Mr. Darling. “Treating around a home can keep subterranean termites away for a decade.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you repair termite damage?

A: Yes, we can provide repairs and rebuild areas that have been damaged by termites, water or dry rot.

Q: What types of termites are in this area?

A: In Northern California, there are two types of termites: drywood and subterranean. Drywood termites live in wood—when they show up in your home, there’s no way to tell where the colony is without dismantling the house, so fumigation is usually the best way to deal with them. We can also use a localized treatment in many cases if you’d prefer.

Q: Why can’t you provide termite control or extermination without doing an inspection first?

A: California law says we must do an inspection before we can move forward with control or repair work on a property. We also like to perform inspections so we know exactly what needs to be done. We can do a complete inspection of the entire house or a limited inspection based on your specific concerns.

Q: Why do you charge for termite inspections?

A: Our inspection report is valuable because it explains the severity of your termite problem, details your options and helps you prioritize the actions you may want to take. Some companies use free inspections as a way to get their foot in the door so they can sell products, but most termite companies charge for inspections because they invest their time and expertise.

Q: How often should I have my house inspected?

A: We recommend having a termite inspection every three to five years.

Q: Do you work evenings and weekends?

A: We try to work with our clients’ schedules whenever possible, but we do need daylight to do our work. We like to do inspections earlier in the day because they can take several hours to complete, so we can’t start too late or we’ll run out of natural light. We don’t typically work on weekends, but we understand that some commercial and residential customers need us to perform inspections at those times, so we’ll work it into our schedule if it’s absolutely necessary.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Jim Darling

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Jim Darling is a veteran of the pest control industry and owner of J & M Termite Control, Inc., a Diamond Certified company since 2005. He can be reached at (650) 530-0987 or by email.

Jim Darling: Daily Earnings

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Program Reporter

MOUNTAIN VIEW — With an educational background in horticulture, Jim Darling originally planned to pursue a career in the landscaping industry. Little did he know, that was merely a stepping stone to a bigger professional opportunity. “My brother-in-law, Jim Meredith, started J & M Termite Control, Inc. in 1973,” he says. “Soon after, he talked to me about coming to work for him, but I was more interested in developing my landscaping career. Later, the landscape business partnership I was in wasn’t working out very well, so I decided to take him up on his offer. Eventually, he put me in charge of the office, and when he retired in 2005, I bought the company from him.”

Today, as owner of J & M Termite Control, Jim says the one aspect of his job he enjoys more than dealing with termites is dealing with people. “I like the social interaction of going to people’s homes and meeting them. A lot of our business is real estate inspections, so it’s always interesting to talk to people about their circumstances.”

A lifetime resident of the Bay Area, Jim lives in Pleasanton with his wife, Donna, where he appreciates the temperate climate. “Here on the Peninsula, we have some of the best weather in the world,” he says. “When I was in the Army, I had the opportunity to see a lot of the United States, which convinced me that where I came from was one of the best places to live.”

Outside of work, Jim engages in a variety of pastimes, particularly ones that take place outdoors. “We have a cabin in the mountains where we go to relax and kayak,” he says. “I also enjoy gardening at home, which goes back to my horticultural background.” Additionally, Jim likes spending time with his grown sons, Kevin and Scott. “My older son, Kevin, is a deputy sheriff in Sacramento County and has two sons, so we enjoy getting together with them as often as we can. My younger son, Scott, works in the pest control industry. He worked here at J & M for about 20 years, and he’s currently working in the Los Angeles area.”

In his professional career, Jim espouses the importance of professional integrity. “I believe in doing the best job you can and being honest and straightforward with people,” he says. “After more than 40 years in business, this company has earned a very good reputation, but we have to keep earning it every day.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Jim says he’d hit the open road. “We have a big SUV that doesn’t have a whole lot of miles on it, and I think it’d be fun to take it for a road trip. I’ve always wanted to go to Glacier National Park, so I’d probably drive there.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Do you have a favorite local restaurant?
A: I like brew pubs and pub food, so two of my favorites are Main Street Brewery and Redcoats, both of which are located in Pleasanton.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Read or work on whatever home improvement project I have going.

Q: If you could live in the city or the country, which would you choose?
A: The country.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I collect different types of weather thermometers. Ever since I was a pilot in the military, weather has been a hobby of mine.

Q: Pancakes or waffles?
A: Pancakes. We always make them when we’re up at our cabin.

  • Identifying Signs of Termite Infestation

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Termites are a constant concern for Bay Area homeowners, which is why it’s a good idea to be aware of typical signs of infestation. One of the most common indicators of termite activity is tiny wood granules, which are often situated in piles on windowsills and other areas. These granules are the byproduct of drywood termites eating away at a home’s structural wood, so if you see them, you should immediately call a termite professional.

Another sign of termite activity is mud tubes, although they indicate an entirely different species of termite at work: subterranean termites. Mud tubes are tiny holes created by subterranean termites as they travel from their underground nests up to the surface in search of sustenance. They’re commonly found along foundation cracks, beneath flooring, around baseboards, and behind siding and plumbing fixtures.

Whether or not you’ve observed evidence of termite activity in your home, it’s recommended to have a professional inspection every two to five years. By taking this preventative step, you’ll allow for the detection of termite activity long before it becomes a full-blown problem.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jim Darling: To help you protect your own home, you could be looking for evidence such as little granulated droppings that are wood colored that’ll be either scattered or in piles. We were worried that we had termites because there was a lot of sawdust coming out of cracks that met the foundation. It ended up being sawdust that was getting blown out, due to high winds, from when it was built. They were good though, we liked the tech who came out.

The tech was very informative.

It was a very simple and straightforward service. They were able to make the concrete, somehow, look exactly the same. The last testing we had done for termites left little holes all around the foundation, like little drill bit holes filled with concrete that did not match the current. Somehow these guys made it look like nothing ever happened.

We couldn't tell they drilled holes.
