Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for tree service companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. Horticultural Services, LTD. takes an all-inclusive approach to helping its clients and provides them with a wide range of tree care services, including removal, stump grinding, pruning and trimming, view clearing, fertilization, consulting and pest control. “The first thing we do with a new client is schedule an onsite meeting and walk through their property,” explains owner Chris Chapman. “After identifying any problems, we then offer them options that begin with the least dramatic, invasive and expensive choice. They really appreciate the effort we put into making the process as simple as possible.”

One of Horticultural Services’ most distinguishing characteristics is its punctual staff members, all of whom are meticulously trained to provide timely service within the given parameters of each job. “We go through every item on a work order and answer any questions that may arise,” says Mr. Chapman. “Also, we only use small footprint-type equipment to prevent damage to other landscaping.”

Unlike other tree care companies that only focus on arboricultural work, Horticultural Services also offers pest control services that utilize organic products as much as possible. “We take an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to pest control that starts with the least toxic solutions,” notes Mr. Chapman. “Then we work our way up the scale into fungicides, insecticides and heavy-duty herbicides. We feel it’s important to give our clients numerous choices when it comes to environmentally-friendly products and materials.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will your equipment harm my landscaping?

A: We ask our customers to consider possible damage to nearby plants when a tree stump is removed. Some choose to add more plants to cover up a stump, others choose to remove plants during a stump grinding and replace them when the work is completed.

Q: Can you trim my neighbor’s tree for me?

A: Most of the time, the answer is yes, but there are multiple issues involved. You have to deal with your neighbor, and deal making is often part of the agreement. It’s important to be aware of all the legalities before you proceed.

Q: Can I top my tree?

A: No, it’s never a good idea to top a tree. There are techniques we can use to reduce the size of your tree.

Q: Is my tree dangerous?

A: Trees have to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. More often than not, if a customer suspects a tree is dangerous, it’s not. They often equate the overall size of the tree with a high level of danger.

Q: Are you insured?

A: Yes, and all our insurance information is available on request. Customers can even be named as additionally insured parties on their policies.

Chris Chapman: Cultivating a Livelihood

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ORINDA — Chris Chapman spent much of his childhood working outdoors, and even though he didn’t realize it at the time, he was cultivating a future livelihood all the while. “When I was growing up, my dad used to send me off to different places to work during the summers,” he remembers. “I spent one summer putting up hay and chasing cows in Montana, another working with a big game outfitter in Colorado, and yet another working agriculture in California. During college, I got involved in landscaping and ended up starting my own business. After 10 years, I was looking for a career upgrade, so I got certified as an arborist and have specialized in tree service ever since.”

Today, as owner of Horticultural Services, LTD, Chris says his favorite part of his job is seeing the long-term effects of his work. “I like seeing the gradual changes that take place on the properties we work on. It’s very rewarding to service a distressed tree and then come back a couple of years later to see it healthy and flourishing.”

Originally from Southern California, Chris now resides in Concord with his wife, Gael, and their two children, Jack and Marilyn. When asked what he appreciates most about living and working in the Bay Area, Chris cites the ideal outdoor working conditions. “With the great weather we have, the Bay Area is the best place in the country to do this kind of work…probably one of the best places on the planet, for that matter.”

Outside of work, Chris furthers his outdoor enjoyment with hobbies like gardening and cultivating bonsai trees. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, reading about military history and keeping up with his two older children: Jessica, who lives in San Diego, and Trevor, who is currently attending college.

In regard to his professional career, Chris espouses the importance of honesty. “If I look at a job and it’s apparent that it doesn’t require my level of expertise, I’ll let the client know and refer them elsewhere,” he explains. “I’ll tell them, ‘I can do this for you, but so could a gardener, and you’d get a better price.’ I just prefer to be honest rather than stick my hands in people’s pockets or try to sell them services they don’t need.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Chris says he would get to work on expanding his home garden. “The space is kind of limited where we live, so we’re mainly growing things in containers. If I had some more room, I’d triple the square footage of my garden and get ready for the coming season.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: A dog person.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Rocco’s Ristorante Pizzeria in Walnut Creek.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Read a book.

Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: Besides the Bible, one of my favorites is “Guadalcanal: Starvation Island” by Eric Hammel. It’s a military history book about the United States’ first offensive in the Pacific during World War II. It’s an absolutely fascinating account.

Q: How do you like your eggs?
A: Scrambled.

  • Proper Tree Irrigation

ORINDA — Irrigation is crucial for established trees, but in order to be effective, it’s important to follow proper procedure. For example, a common mistake people make with tree irrigation is watering the trunk. Since a tree absorbs water through its roots, watering its trunk doesn’t make much sense. Instead, water should be applied at the outside edge of the tree’s drip line, where the shadow of its canopy is cast upon the ground. It’s also important to provide an adequate amount of water—ideally, the water should soak down about a foot into the soil.

In addition to proper procedure, a great way to maximize the effectiveness of irrigation is to apply a 4- to 6-inch layer of mulch beneath the tree’s drip line. Besides reducing sun and wind evaporation, mulch adds beneficial fungi and bacteria to the soil as it decomposes, which improve tree roots’ ability to absorb water and nutrients. Since mulch decomposes over time, it should be reapplied annually.

  • Video: Proper Tree Irrigation

    Complete Video Transcription:

ORINDA — Host, Sarah Rutan: While it’s important to regularly water the trees on your property, it’s equally crucial to use the proper techniques. Today we’re in Orinda with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Chris Chapman of Horticultural Services, LTD to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Chris Chapman: Irrigation of trees is the most important thing you can do for established tress this time of year. The best place to water is at the outside edge of the drip line. That’s where the canopy — the shadow of the canopy — comes on to the ground — the drip line, outside edge of the drip line. You have to make sure that the water soaks down about a foot, so you’re going to want to soak the — turn the hose on, so it soaks in real deep. You want to get about a foot of water penetration all the way underneath the drip line of the canopy. If you water real close to the trunk, that won’t do any good.

You want to get a, like I said, about a foot of penetration all the way around the drip line of the tree. After that has been accomplished, another thing that you could do that would be really helpful — also really cheap — would be to put a layer of mulch, about four to six inches of mulch, underneath the drip line of the tree. Getting chips from a chipper is probably the best stuff that you can get, and usually you can get it for free. That should be good for about a year. The reason why you put the chips down is it keeps the water from evaporating with the sun and the wind. Also, as the chips decompose over time, they add beneficial fungi and bacteria back into the soil.

If you have any concerns about your particular site you might want to contact an arborist, and, if you do, use Diamond Certified. They’re a good bunch.
