Company Philosophy

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for kitchen and bathroom contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Jeffrey Goffo Construction, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: take a personalized approach to each project that emphasizes respect for clients and their properties. “We take our time and give our clients the attention they deserve,” affirms owner Jeffrey Goffo. “From the initial meeting to the finishing touches, we focus on doing the job right.”

Jeffrey Goffo Construction has been remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, building room additions and outdoor living spaces, and providing other general contracting services for residential and commercial clients throughout San Francisco since 1991. The company also offers style-specific facade renovation services that help customers improve the curb appeal of their homes, and it can renovate basements and garages to meet San Francisco’s unique living requirements.

Unlike remodeling companies that limit the contents of their estimates to the bare essentials, Jeffrey Goffo Construction takes its bids to the next level. “We give line item proposals with language that clearly outlines the labor and material costs associated with every item,” explains Mr. Goffo. “It’s more work for us, but it helps our clients see the exact content of their projects and allows them to edit their proposals to better match their specific needs and budget.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Jeffrey Goffo Construction is its highly experienced crew members, all of whom have been with the company for many years and share Mr. Goffo’s passion for personalized construction work. “We’re loyal to our employees, and in turn, they’re loyal to the company,” says Mr. Goffo. “They’re polite and talented, and they really care about our clients.”

Industry Info

When working with a contractor on a home renovation project, don’t underestimate the importance of a highly detailed bid. Regardless of the size or scope of your remodeling project, your budget will be one of the biggest factors in terms of how satisfied you are with the finished product. Few homeowners have unlimited funds for renovations, and most contractors understand this, so instead of pushing you to find more money for your job, your contractor should give you a detailed bid that allows you to stick to your original budget and still achieve the results you want.

So how can you find a remodeling contractor that will honor your budget? The difference is often in the estimate and initial bid. “Beware of contractors whose bids give one-word descriptions and flat prices,” cautions Jeffrey Goffo, owner of Goffo Construction Inc. in San Francisco. “Good proposals should have detailed line items with language that clearly explains what the contractor will do, as well as the labor and material cost for each.”

This practice will not only give you a chance to fairly compare bids from several companies and see why certain bids vary, it’ll also provide you with assurance that your job will be completed to your specific standards. “A line item proposal will give you the opportunity to see exactly where your budget is going and enable you to cut costs by removing unimportant items from the proposal,” says Mr. Goffo.

Detailed bids can also prevent confusion by outlining who is responsible for each part of the job and the exact materials and amount of labor included in the base price. “Instead of simply saying ‘tile,’ a detailed bid will read, ‘Install cement board over existing frame with building paper. Owners supply tile. Grout and seal seam, no borders or patterns included,’” explains Mr. Goffo. “This will help avoid confusion and conflict because you and your contractor will have the same expectations from the start. Often, homeowners see something intricate in a magazine or online and think that all remodeling work costs the same. If a contractor’s estimate doesn’t spell out everything, you could be under the impression that your job will cost the base price, when in reality, what you’re expecting is much more labor intensive than a standard installation. A detailed estimate will protect against that and keep your work on budget.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will it take to complete my job?

A: It depends on the extent of the work, but we always include a detailed timeframe with the initial proposal, and we’ll complete the job within that timeframe barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Q: Do you provide detailed proposals?

A: Yes, our proposals clearly explain every line item and the labor and material cost associated with each. This is important for helping our clients see the exact content of their jobs, and it also allows them to edit their proposals to better match their needs and budget.

Q: How many people are on your crew?

A: There are typically three to five people on a crew, and we also use subcontractors when jobs require larger crews.

Q: Are your subcontractors reliable?

A: Yes, and we also carry additional insurance certificates for each of them to further protect our clients.

Q: Does the owner of the company visit the jobsite?

A: Yes, our owner, Jeffrey Goffo, usually visits each jobsite twice a day to oversee the work and make sure everything is being done properly.

Q: Can I get a reference list of your past clients?

A: Absolutely. We encourage our potential clients to not only check references, but also to come see past work that we’ve done firsthand.

Jeffrey Goffo: Big City Builder

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO — While Jeffrey Goffo grew up working alongside his father, it wasn’t until his college years that he realized he wanted to follow in his professional footsteps. “My father was a carpenter for 60 years in the Chicago area where I grew up,” he tells. “I began working with him when I was a young boy and continued into my teens and through college. When I was in my early 20s, I traveled to Florida to help him build a new house, and it was during the course of that project that I decided I wanted to pursue a career in construction.”

Today, as owner of Goffo Construction Inc., Jeffrey says one of his favorite aspects of his job is working amidst the architectural diversity of San Francisco. “I enjoy all the different types of architecture we have here in San Francisco, from Victorians and Edwardians to Marina-style homes and earthquake cottages. Each style has its own set of challenges, so it keeps things interesting.”

Originally from Indiana, Jeffrey came to the Bay Area in 1976 and continues to reside in the San Francisco area today. “San Francisco has a lot to offer, from its visual beauty to its rich cultural diversity,” he says. “Also, the weather is perfect for working in the construction trade. I couldn’t think of a better place to be.”

Outside of work, Jeffrey engages in a variety of activities, from golf to winemaking. “I’ve played golf my whole life—I started out caddying for my dad and later became a Chick Evans Caddie Scholar,” he says. “Today, I run an annual golf tournament and donate all the proceeds to charity.” Jeffrey also enjoys getting away from it all by spending time at his summer house with his wife, Lisa, and their sons, Nick and Alex.

In his life and career, Jeffrey cites the influence of a particular piece of paternal wisdom. “One of the things my father told me was to treat the home you’re working on as if it were your own,” he remembers. “This advice really served me well over the years and continues to be at the core of my business philosophy today.”

When asked what his future retirement might look like, Jeffrey says it’ll likely be a mixture of avocational pursuits and charitable ventures. “I plan on perfecting my winemaking craft and improving my Bocce game, both of which go hand-in-hand with my Italian-American heritage. I’d also like to volunteer more time to charitable organizations I’m passionate about, such as Habitat for Humanity and the First Tee Junior Golf Program at Harding Park Golf Course.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Coffee or tea?
A: Coffee.

Q: What’s your favorite kind of tree?
A: The olive tree. In addition to winemaking, I like to make my own olive oil.

Q: What’s your favorite season?
A: Fall—that’s when San Francisco has the best weather.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Antique tools.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Harris’ Steakhouse in San Francisco.

Q: Who’s your favorite movie monster?
A: The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

  • The First Step to Starting a Remodeling Project in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — If you own a San Francisco property and are considering a remodeling project, there’s one preliminary step you’ll want to take before getting a contractor involved: contact the city building department to find out if there are any outstanding Notices of Violation on your property. A Notice of Violation is issued when a home or property is deemed to be in violation of local building code and requires remedial repairs or modifications. The reason it’s important to look into this at the outset is because a Notice of Violation can significantly delay the start of your project and require you to reschedule for a later date, which can conflict with your contractor’s schedule.

Getting a report on your property is a simple process. You can either visit the city building department in person at 1680 Mission Street or request a 3R report online at sfdbi.org. By discovering any back permits, job cards or potential violation notices in advance, you’ll be able to ensure your home or building is completely legal before commencing the remodeling process.

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN FRANCISCO — Host, Sarah Rutan: Prior to starting a remodeling project in San Francisco, it’s important to consider the legal aspects and local building codes. Today we’re in San Francisco with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeffrey Goffo of Goffo Construction Inc. to learn one tip before you begin.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Jeffrey Goffo: As an individual owner of a property in San Francisco, considering a remodeling project, it is always a good idea to go to the Building Department and see if you have have a Notice of Violation on your property. That will tell you if you need to take care of this problem before starting a remodeling project. If you have a Notice of Violation on this property, it’s possible that you will be delayed in the start of your new project, you may lose that contractor, as they are very busy that this time, and have to either reschedule at a later date, the project you were hoping to start right away.

This is a very simple process that can be done on the third floor of the Building Department, talking to a supervisor on the counter, and/or getting a 3R report on the sixth floor of the Building Department at 1680 Mission Street and getting a report of all the back permits, job cards, work that was done, and potential of Notice of Violations in that report.

Host, Sarah Rutan: To learn more from local, top-rated companies, visit our Diamond Certified Expert Reports at experts.diamondcertified.org.
