Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for plumbing companies that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing, the key to achieving and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction is simple: focus on providing quality workmanship throughout every step of every project. “We guarantee all our work, so if a customer ever has a problem with any service we’ve performed, we’ll come back and fix it as soon as possible,” says office manager Robert Morales. “We never consider a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”

Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing has been providing plumbing services for residential and commercial clients in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties since 1985. The family-owned and operated company has the in-house capabilities to handle general plumbing installations and repairs; perform trenchless sewer line replacements; clean sewers and drains; install Green plumbing equipment like tankless water heaters, low flow toilets and hybrid heat systems; and more.

Unlike plumbing companies that hire inexperienced technicians in an effort to reduce their operating costs, Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing maintains a staff of knowledgeable professionals who have experience dealing with a wide range of plumbing issues. “We have a very high standard for our employees,” affirms Mr. Morales. “For example, we never send a technician out on their own unless they’ve spent the requisite time training with an experienced member of our staff, which allows us to maintain high levels of quality control.”

Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing further differentiates itself from its competition by utilizing a variety of cutting-edge technology on every job, including high-resolution in-line cameras and sophisticated leak detection equipment. “We’re also fully equipped to handle the most current methods of sewer work, such as trenchless replacement,” adds Mr. Morales. “Having the best technology is important because it allows us to provide efficient solutions for our customers’ needs.”

Industry Info

If you’re a homeowner, it’s important to consider the benefits of a preventative sewer line inspection. A house’s sewer system is one of its most neglected features, primarily because it’s underground and easy to forget about. As a result, most people don’t notice sewer problems until they’ve escalated out of control, necessitating drastic repairs and even costly sewer line replacements. This can be especially troublesome for new homeowners, who may discover that their recently purchased home has a damaged sewer line that could add $20,000 to the original price tag.

Even if your house has had sewer problems for an extended period of time, the damage often goes unnoticed due to its clandestine nature. For example, tree roots can rupture pipes and allow sewage to seep into the ground, but since sewer lines can be as deep as 10 feet below the surface, such a leakage could go on for years without attracting attention. When it comes to identifying a leaking sewer line, look for unusually lush patches of lawn in random areas of your yard, sections of ground that are perpetually moist or damp, sewage back-ups in your sinks and bathtubs, and the lingering presence of a foul odor around your plumbing fixtures.

The benefits of trenchless sewer replacement
Replacing a sewer line used to be a sizeable, labor-intensive endeavor that required the excavation of the entire sewer pipe. Today, trenchless replacement technology allows plumbers to repair damaged sewer lines without the need for excessive excavation or extensive interruption. In this method, a plumber inserts HDPE pipe (which is extremely tough and durable) into the old sewer pipe from a single access point and feeds it through the entire length of pipe, which essentially replaces it from the inside. Unlike clay or cast iron pipe, this pipe is practically indestructible, impervious to both corrosion and breakage.

Because of the simplicity and time efficiency of the procedure, trenchless sewer replacement is often a less expensive option for homeowners. Equally beneficial is the significant reduction of landscape disruption: the old method required the excavation of 20 to 50 feet of pipe at a depth of four to six feet below the surface, but the trenchless method requires only a single entry hole.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you tell me if my plumbing is up to code?

A: Yes. We work with several property management and homeowner’s associations, and we’re able to perform comprehensive property reviews to ensure our customers’ plumbing and gas systems meet California code requirements.

Q: Do I need to schedule an appointment ahead of time or can you come out today?

A: It depends on our work volume for that particular day. If it’s a plumbing emergency, we can typically be there within an hour or two of the call.

Q: Can you fix my dishwasher?

A: A lot of people mistakenly assume dishwasher maintenance is a regular plumbing service. We can help if your dishwasher is clogged, but if it’s a mechanical problem, we have to refer you to a company that does appliance work.

Q: How much will it cost to clear my clogged drain?

A: It depends on the extent of the problem. Until we’ve seen the issue firsthand, we won’t know what’s clogging your line, so it’s not really possible to give you an estimate. However, we’re happy to come out and fix the problem, regardless of its scope.

Q: Do you offer free estimates?

A: We offer free estimates on pretty much everything except drain cleaning. A technician will come to your home and provide a quote on the spot.

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Victor Morales

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE
  • Victor Morales is operation sales manager at Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing, a Diamond Certified company since 2013. He can be reached at (510) 564-7933 or by email.

Victor Morales: Up for the Challenge

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN LEANDRO — After spending just five years working in the plumbing industry, Victor Morales felt he was ready to take things to the next level, so he obtained his state license and co-founded Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing with his wife, Esther. Twenty-five years later, when asked what motivated him to make the leap from employee to proprietor, Victor replies that he was simply up for the challenge. “I saw it as something to aspire to—a challenge to myself,” he remembers. “So far, it’s been a successful venture. Not only have we been able to keep our license in good standing, we’ve also been able to build a loyal clientele base by continuing to keep our customers happy.”

As operation sales manager of Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing, Victor says his favorite part of the job is taking care of customers and furthering his company’s positive reputation. “As a plumbing professional, my passion is providing our customers with excellent service at an honest price. Not only does this give me a personal sense of fulfillment, I also think it has been a major factor in the continued growth of our business.”

Originally from Mexico City, Victor came to the United States in 1979 and currently resides in Alameda, where he says the temperate climate and scenic landscape make for “a contractor’s heaven.” Victor believes limiting his company’s service area to the local region has helped it maintain its reputation for dependability. “Unlike companies that advertise all over the Bay Area, we only service Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, just because we want to stay reliable for our customers in the local community.”

When he’s not working, most of Victor’s time is devoted to activities with his family. “Esther and I have eight children, some of whom are grown up and some of whom are still at home,” he says. “We like to do things together like swim at the beach and go to Raiders or A’s games. My kids have been instrumental in motivating me to lead a successful life.”

Victor attributes much of his professional success to his ability to surround himself with people who share his vision. “One of our original company goals was to assemble a very skilled and reliable crew,” he says. “By hiring high-caliber people who possess the same level of integrity and motivation that we do, we’ve been able to further our success as a business.”

When asked what he’d do if he could retire tomorrow, Victor says he’d transition to a full-time career as a stay-at-home dad. “We still have four young ones at home, so I’d definitely take advantage of the opportunity to spend more time with them and have a greater involvement in their lives.”

Ask Me Anything!

  • Avoiding Problems with Toilets and Garbage Disposals

SAN LEANDRO — While plumbing fixtures such as toilets and garbage disposals offer convenient ways to dispose of refuse, it’s important to know a few usage guidelines so you can avoid potential problems. One of particular importance is knowing what not to put down your toilet or garbage disposal.

    Garbage disposals
While a garbage disposal may seem like a “catch-all” for organic refuse, there are actually several things that should never be put into it. For example, items like chicken bones and large pits from avocados and peaches can damage the device’s blades, and rice and pasta can cause clogs due to water expansion. Stringy vegetables, potato peelings, egg shells and coffee grounds can also cause problems by wrapping around the blades or getting caught in the trap. To avoid these situations, consider composting organic items instead.

    Toilets
As a general rule, never flush anything that doesn’t dissolve in water. While in many cases this is obvious, a common point of confusion is in regard to items like paper towels, baby wipes and sanitary napkins, which is why those are the most common culprits in toilet and sewer line clogs. To avoid a costly service call, dispose of these items in a garbage receptacle rather than flush them down the toilet.

  • Video: Caring for your Plumbing Fixtures

    Complete Video Transcription:

SAN LEANDRO — Host, Sarah Rutan: An important part of maintaining your home’s plumbing fixtures is to know what not to dispose of. Today we’re in San Leandro with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Victor Morales of Gladiator Rooter & Plumbing to hear why.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Victor Morales: What we suggest to customers is to not overload their garbage disposals. Don’t grind heavy stuff like chicken bones or stuff like that. Don’t do potato peelings or coffee grounds because they usually clog the drain within the first use.

Also, when it comes to your toilet, don’t flush paper towels or sanitary napkins or baby wipes because they don’t get dissolved by the water and they usually clog right within the toilet and also downstream within the sewer line.

They are such great people. We've used them at least four or five times. Every time it is something new, and they fix it no matter what. We have had different issues from the outside to the inside, 1890 was when our house was built, so they are very versed with their skills. They are a great company.
