He's my go-to mechanic. What I tell everybody and what I tell all my friends is that he's a great guy and a great mechanic. He listens to you when you tell him what is going on with the car, and he troubleshoots well. He will talk about the work that needs to be done and what the priorities are. He's great at working with you to make sure the most important things get taken care of first.

He is nice, and his shop is inviting. He's great.

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for auto repair shops that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Cruz Auto Repair, the best way to achieve and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction is to approach every job with a combination of quality and honesty. “In addition to our high level of workmanship, we pride ourselves on our ability to clearly communicate with our customers,” says Partner Agustin Cruz. “By explaining the full extent of their vehicle issues and suggesting long-term solutions, we’re able to help them make informed decisions on how to proceed, which they really appreciate.”

Cruz Auto Repair has been repairing and maintaining all types of vehicles at its Richmond facility since 2009. The company utilizes its extensive training and state-of-the-art equipment to handle all types of work, from routine oil changes and scheduled maintenance to transmission replacements, heating and air conditioning system services, and major engine repairs.

Unlike less experienced auto shops that lag behind the curve of industry innovation and rely on outdated equipment and repair methods, Cruz Auto Repair stays up-to-date with the latest techniques and technology so it can provide its customers with the best possible services. “For example, our top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment allows us to be extremely accurate with our diagnoses, and our technicians are consistently trained on how to utilize the latest tools and procedures,” explains Mr. Cruz. “We enjoy the process of applying our industry knowledge to figure out what’s wrong with our customers’ vehicles.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Cruz Auto Repair is the respectful manner in which it treats every customer’s car, regardless of the extent of the repairs it needs. “Our goal is to return vehicles in better condition than they were when we received them,” affirms Mr. Cruz. “We emphasize cleanliness every step of the way, from putting down mats inside the car to covering the steering wheel so it doesn’t get dirty.”

Industry Info

Regularly check your vehicle’s fluids to make sure it’s running at top performance. Even if your car is newer and running well, it’s still a good idea to check your fluids regularly. In particular, you should focus on the three most vital fluids in your vehicle: the transmission fluid, the coolant and the oil. The other fluids are important, too, but they won’t leave you stranded if you run out.

To check your oil, open the vehicle hood (make sure it’s cool) and locate the oil dipstick. Pull it out and wipe it off on a clean rag or paper towel. Insert the dipstick all the way back into the pipe and pull it out again. Note where the oil level reaches and if it’s clean or has debris in it. The oil level should reach above the “add” line but below the “full” line. The oil may be dark, but it shouldn’t have debris in it. Rub a little oil between your fingers—if it leaves a dirty mark, it may need to be changed.

You can check your transmission fluid by using a similar method. The dipstick will tell you if the fluid level is within the acceptable range. Transmission fluid needs to be changed much less often than motor oil (some manufacturers say you can go 100,000 miles between changes), but if you check your fluid and it appears dark, burned or grainy, call a mechanic.

If you want to check your coolant levels, make sure your vehicle’s engine is cool or you risk being sprayed with scalding water. You can usually view coolant levels through the side of the coolant compartment. If the liquid doesn’t reach the “full” line, add more antifreeze. Some coolants require you to add water while others are premixed, so read the directions carefully. Only add plain water to your radiator in an emergency, and never add coolant to a hot engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you give me an estimate over the phone?

A: We may be able to give you general pricing information, but in order to give you a precise quote, we’ll need to see the car in person and perform a diagnosis.

Q: What should I do if my “check engine” light comes on?

A: If your ‘check engine’ light comes on, schedule an appointment to bring in your car as soon as possible. We’ll run a diagnostic test to determine the problem.

Q: Do you charge a diagnostic fee?

A: Yes, but depending on the extent of the job, the fee can usually be credited to your final repair bill.

Q: Do you provide extended warranties for major services?

A: Yes, we provide a three-year parts and labor warranty for large jobs like engine and transmission replacements.

Q: What kinds of parts do you use?

A: We usually recommend using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, but we leave the choice up to the customer.

Q: Can you fix my car if it fails a smog test?

A: Yes, we often do repair work to fix smog-related issues.

Agustin Cruz: Cruisin’

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

RICHMOND — Like most kids, Agustin Cruz had lofty aspirations for his future career when he was growing up. And even though these aspirations faded with time, the reality turned out to be better than he could’ve imagined. “When I was young, I wanted to be an engineer, but when I realized how much school was involved, I decided it wasn’t very realistic,” he says. “I had some experience working on cars, so I decided to try a career in auto repair. I found that working in the automotive field satisfied my technical interest and also allowed me to work with my hands, so it was really a perfect fit.”

Today, as owner of Cruz Auto Repair, Agustin says he appreciates the personal rewards he gets from his daily occupation. “I really enjoy working on cars, but what’s even better is the opportunity to serve my community. I find it very rewarding to help people and make them feel safe on the road.”

Originally from Mexico, Agustin now resides in San Pablo with his wife, Alma, and their children, Isaac and Deborah. Outside of work, he likes spending time with his family and enjoying the sunny, scenic atmosphere of his Contra Costa County locale. “My family and I like being outside, so we go for walks at local parks and spend time at the beach,” he says. “I also like reading and going running.”

In regard to his professional career, Agustin espouses the importance of honesty. “Besides doing quality work, I think the most important thing in business is being honest with people,” he affirms. “Communication is key, so every time you work on someone’s vehicle, you have to keep them in the loop throughout the process and be upfront about what measures are needed.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Agustin says he’d take an extended holiday. “I’d probably take my family on a vacation and relax a little. However, after I got back, I’d have to find some way to keep myself busy. I’m not the kind of person who can just do nothing—I like to keep moving. Maybe I’d go after that engineering degree!”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: I’d go to China to see the Great Wall.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: Portumex in Richmond.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Hang out with my kids and watch a movie.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Thank you cards and gifts from happy customers.

  • Aiding the Diagnostic Process

RICHMOND — If you have a problem with your car, you’ll likely take it to a mechanic for diagnosis. However, you may not realize that you can personally assist with the diagnostic process. How? By communicating any details you can recall from when the problem took place.

Auto shops may have the tools and equipment to diagnose your vehicle, but they don’t have a personal recollection of the circumstances under which the problem occurred. For example, was your vehicle climbing or ascending a steep grade? Were you on the highway or a main road in town? Were there any immoderate weather conditions such as extreme heat or cold? Did you hear any strange noises or feel any unusual vibrations? Believe it or not, these kinds of details can aid the diagnostic process. The more information you can give your technician, the easier it will be to get to the bottom of things.
