Comparative Summary

Few locksmith companies earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality. Even fewer can also claim more than 50 years in the industry, but that’s exactly the case for Crown Hardware & Lock–the family-owned and operated company has been offering its services to San Francisco residents since 1957. “Our experience and industry knowledge make us uniquely qualified to help our clients with all types of lock- and security-related problems,” says co-owner Joe Schoepp. “We’re the store people are directed to when they need a complex issue solved or are trying to locate rare parts.”

Crown Hardware & Lock provides a wide range of residential and commercial locksmith services, including key duplication and replacement, lock picking and rekeying, and lock installation and repair. “We’re one of the few companies that still repairs locks,” says Office Manager Linda Shaw. “Compared to replacement, that’s often a less expensive option for our clients.” In addition to its general locksmith capabilities, the company installs and repairs high security key systems, access control systems, phone entry systems and intercoms, and closed-circuit TV/surveillance systems.

Unlike locksmith companies that limit their services to installations and repairs, Crown Hardware & Lock also sells a wide variety of locks, keys, safes and other security products at its Balboa Street storefront–a comprehensive business approach that allows the company to act as a one-stop shop for its customers. “People walk in here, look at our wall of products and are amazed at the vast amount of choices,” says Ms. Shaw. “Our knowledgeable sales staff is trained to identify the right product for each customer’s specific situation.”

Another distinguishing feature of Crown Hardware & Lock is its highly trained employees and technicians, all of whom have at least five years of industry experience and some of whom have been with the company for more than 18 years. “Our technicians do everything,” says Ms. Shaw. “Each has his own specialty, but they’re all cross-trained to be as versatile as possible. They can handle all types of installations, and they’re excellent at diagnosing and fixing problems.”

Industry Info

Do your research and consider your options before purchasing a deadbolt lock. Installing a deadbolt lock in your home can be a great way to increase security, but it’s important to remember that not all deadbolts are created equally—inferior design, low-quality materials and other defects can directly affect their efficiency. Choosing the right type of deadbolt lock might seem like an intimidating task, but with the right information, it’s possible to greatly improve your chances of purchasing a high-quality product. Consider the following tips before making a final decision:

Lock-picking vulnerability
To help prevent your lock from being picked, choose a deadbolt with a high-security cylinder. They’re a bit more expensive, but high-security locks often have special pins that can’t be picked with standard lock picking tools.

Length of the bolt
If a deadbolt lock has a fairly short bolt, the door can be easily opened with a crowbar or other prying tool. To prevent this, choose a deadbolt lock that has at least a one-inch extension into the doorframe. Though it may be more time consuming to install this type of deadbolt, it’s an effective method to increase home security.

Evaluate the material
Deadbolts made of certain materials can be vulnerable to burglary. For example, a lock made of a relatively soft metal like brass can be sawed through with a minimal amount of effort. Many burglars use tools such as hacksaws to infiltrate low-quality deadbolt locks. To prevent this, choose a lock that has a bolt constructed of steel.

Cylinder guards
With some types of deadbolts, the cylinder guard (the circular metal part where you insert your key) can be forcibly removed with a wrench. However, if you purchase a deadbolt with a tapered cylinder, it can’t be easily removed by using this method. For additional security, you may want to go with a “free-spinning” cylinder, which is also much harder to remove with a wrench.

Price
Some advanced security deadbolts can cost up to $200, so you should set a budget limit before you start looking at options. However, as with all home security purchases, you often have to make sacrifices in quality for a lower priced lock. A lock is an important part of your home’s level of security, so you should always carefully consider your purchase. While it may not seem practical to spend a large amount of money on a lock, it’s best if you first evaluate your specific security needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How fast is your response time for emergencies?

A: For lockouts, we try to have someone on location within 30 minutes of the initial call. We treat emergencies seriously, but our response time depends on the location of our trucks when the call comes in.

Q: Can you change the combination or replace the lock on my safe?

A: We can change the combination, but replacing the lock is dependent on the type of safe you have. If it’s a small safe, you can bring it in and we’ll service it in our shop, which saves you the cost of a service call. If it’s a big safe, we can come to your location.

Q: Do you handle automotive lockouts?

A: Yes. We just need to know the make, model and year of the car so we know what specific tools to use.

Q: Do you also install and maintain automatic door openers and closers?

A: Yes. We install ADA-compliant door openers/closers every week—we run the wiring, put in the operators, install the buttons and set up the remote controls.

Q: What’s the difference between a re-key and a lock change?

A: A re-key is where you retain the same lock and reset the pins so the old key won’t work anymore. Many people don’t know that’s possible, but it’s actually a lot less expensive than swapping out the entire old lock for a new one.
