Comparative Summary

Few flooring showrooms earn the prestigious Diamond Certified award, which means they’ve been independently rated Highest in Quality and Helpful Expertise. Even fewer can also claim 70 years of success in the industry, but that’s exactly the case for Conklin Bros of San Carlos Contract Division. “We’ve been operating since 1947, so thousands of customers can attest to the honest, reliable service we provide,” says owner Ed Hansen. “New flooring can be an expensive investment, so consumers want to work with a company they can trust. With our longevity and experience, we’ve been able to develop a loyal clientele base that knows we’re going to deliver on our promises.”

Conklin Bros of San Carlos Contract Division provides a variety of flooring products at its San Carlos facility, including carpet, hardwood, laminate, and ceramic and luxury vinyl tile made by industry-leading manufacturers. The company is also qualified to install flooring for residential and commercial clients in San Mateo County, and its mobile showroom helps customers see how different flooring samples look in their homes and businesses.

Unlike flooring showrooms that subcontract installation work to inexperienced technicians, Conklin Bros of San Carlos Contract Division uses its own team of expert installers on every project. “It takes real craftsmen to install carpeting and wood flooring, and we pride ourselves on having some of the best craftsmen in the industry,” says Mr. Hansen. “They’re on time, polite, honest, and they know how to do careful, high-quality work. It can be stressful for people to have flooring installed in their homes, but our technicians handle every step of the process so they can relax.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Conklin Bros of San Carlos Contract Division is its company-wide dedication to quality control, which Mr. Hansen says is a natural byproduct of its decades of experience. “We’ve learned that the best way to handle a problem is to call the manufacturer right away and take care of it, not wait until after it’s installed. In those cases, we offer customers a discount so they know we care about making things right as quickly as possible, which they really appreciate.”

Industry Info
If you’re thinking about installing new carpet in your home, consider a product that’s designed to be lived on.
It’s likely that the carpet in your home isn’t very conducive to your daily life. For one, it’s probably not as cleanable as you’d prefer. Stains, visible traffic patterns, soiling in heavy traffic areas, and other signs of wear and tear can make carpeting look shabby, which keeps your home from looking its best.

“Cleanability is one of the biggest advantages of the new types of carpet,” says Ed Hansen, owner of Conklin Bros of San Carlos Contract Division. “Whereas traditional carpeting absorbs liquid and has weave patterns that trap dirt, which causes staining and premature wear, new carpeting blends are specifically manufactured to prevent these problems. In fact, manufacturers are using different combinations of materials that resist dirt, prevent staining and are easier to clean when spills occur.”

However, even with these new products, Mr. Hansen says it’s still important for homeowners to keep their floors clean. “I recommend vacuuming two to three times a week, depending on the amount of foot traffic you get, and having your carpet professionally cleaned one or two times a year. Most people don’t do that, and they’re often disappointed when their carpet won’t clean up seven or eight years down the road. Once stains set in a carpet, it’s impossible to get it completely clean.”

Mr. Hansen says it’s important for homeowners to choose quality products that will last longer and look better than cheap flooring. “Many people don’t understand that the under-padding will cost the same no matter what they put on top of it, and installation costs will be the same regardless of the cost of the carpet. So, it doesn’t benefit you to find a cheap product that will fall apart or won’t clean well. Instead of making your decision on cost alone, I recommend finding a flooring showroom that offers quality products that are also budget-friendly.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long will it take to install my new flooring?
A: “It depends on the type of flooring and the size of your home. For example, hardwood flooring takes a lot of time to install because it’s a complicated process. It takes two to three days to install about 700 square feet of hardwood. On the other hand, carpet can be installed pretty quickly—usually in a day, unless it’s a specialty installation like a staircase.”

Q: Who will install my flooring?
A: “Our expert craftsmen will install your flooring. They’re on time, polite, honest, and they know what it takes to ensure a quality job. Our clients often tell us how happy they are with their flooring after the installations are complete. With some companies, you have no idea who’s coming to your house, but with us, you get the same professionals who’ve worked with us for years.”

Q: What does your “mobile showroom” consist of?
A: “Our mobile showroom is a Conklin Bros. vehicle that’s filled with samples. We’ll come to your home, measure the appropriate areas and show you how certain products look inside your house. The fact that we come to our clients is very convenient for them because when they start considering their options, they already know the exact amount they’ll need for the space.”

Q: Do I have to give you a deposit before you measure my home and provide me with a quote?
A: “No, that’s a big-box store trick. We offer measurements and price quotes completely free of charge.”
Q: Do you have products for all types of budgets?
A: “For the most part, yes. We don’t do low-end products because they’re not worth the effort. Many people don’t understand that the under-padding of a floor will cost the same no matter what’s on top of it, so there’s no benefit to installing a cheap piece of carpet that will fall apart or won’t clean well. We only offer quality products that meet our clients’ expectations and are still budget-friendly.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Ed Hansen

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Ed Hansen: A Lifelong Journey

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN CARLOS — At 72 years old, Ed Hansen looks back on the long professional journey he first embarked upon as a teenager. “Basically, I didn’t want to go to school anymore, so my dad found me a job working for his friend in the flooring industry,” he remembers. “At 15, working and making money appealed to me a lot more than going to school, so I was happy. I guess I could’ve been doing anything—it just happened to be flooring, and I stuck with it.”

After reaching his mid-20s, Ed left his home country of Denmark and came to the United States, where he continued working in the flooring industry. Following 10 years in Washington, D.C., he found an opportunity for advancement that brought him to the Bay Area. Eventually, Ed found himself at Conklin Brothers Contract Division of San Carlos, which he purchased in 1992.

Today, Ed says he’s grateful to still be at it after all these years. “I appreciate the ability to go to work every day—not a lot of people my age are able to do that. I enjoy interacting with people and solving business-related problems. It’s fun and it keeps me sharp.”

A resident of Redwood City, Ed likes to stay active even when he’s not working. “I like to play golf and I also do a lot of walking, just to keep the old motor going,” he says. “There’s a wonderful park in Redwood City where I like taking walks—it’s a nice, peaceful place.” Ed also likes spending time with his wife, Jocelyn, and their three children.

In his life and career, Ed espouses the value of being a proactive problem-solver. “Believe it or not, a problem is a great opportunity to become friends with people,” he says. “A lot of business owners run and hide from problems, but if you deal with problems and take care of customers, they’ll often come back and even recommend you. Either way, if you do everything in your power to please them, you’ll know you did your best, and that’s all you can hope for.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Ed says he’d see the world. “It has certainly crossed my mind to retire, but I’m still enjoying my career. When I do, I’ll probably travel. Besides taking my wife to Europe, I’d like to see Africa and Australia, which are the only two continents I haven’t been to.”

  • Renewable Resources for Carpeting

SAN CARLOS — These days, renewable resources are a major point of focus, especially when it comes to manufacturing. In the carpet industry, this has created an opportunity for innovation, with the application of Green practices and materials giving rise to an array of cutting-edge products. For example, you can now find carpet fibers made from corn, a renewable resource that provides a level of comfort equivalent to any conventional fiber. Even better, these new fibers are easier to clean, which is another improvement upon the past.

Regardless of whether you choose a Green or conventional style of carpet, you should have it professionally cleaned on a regular basis (at least once a year). This will keep your carpet looking new and extend its lifespan. If you neglect ongoing maintenance, it doesn’t matter how eco-friendly your carpet is, it won’t last to its full potential. Investing in annual cleanings is a small price to keep your carpet and home looking their best.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Ed Hansen: A nice surprise when you come into buy carpeting today is that we actually have carpet fibers that are made from corn, renewable green resource, and that’s comfortable that you are buying something that is also recyclable. And a lot of the new fibers that are out clean much, much easier than what you’re used to. But the most important thing is to have it cleaned at least once a year because that way, you keep your carpet fresh and new and not matted down, worn out, and threadbare.
