Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for landscape contractors that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Central Coast Landscape and Maintenance, Inc., the best way to keep customers happy is to utilize its high level of industry expertise to provide them with the best possible service. “We have a wealth of knowledge and experience at the management level, which really benefits our clients,” says Vice President Scott Long. “We also invest a lot into training our technicians, whom we believe are the most skilled in the area.”

Central Coast Landscape and Maintenance has been providing landscaping services for residential and commercial clients in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara Counties since 1982. The company has the training and equipment to handle everything from lawn maintenance and plantings to full-scale landscape construction projects, and it also offers water management services for the convenience of its customers.

Unlike less experienced landscape contractors that take a “one size fits all” approach to every project and tend to give inaccurate bids as a result, Central Coast Landscape and Maintenance focuses on providing precise estimates the first time. “We’re confident and upfront about our pricing,” affirms co-owner Jack Long. “When a landscaping company underbids a job, it often results in a failure of service in the future, which is why we get a lot of clients who come to us after initially choosing a cheaper company.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Central Coast Landscape and Maintenance is its rigorous approach to quality control. “We refer to current industry standards in everything we do so we can ensure quality and compliance,” explains Scott Long. “We also have a supervisor onsite throughout each project to keep an eye on things and guarantee quality every step of the way.”

Industry Info
If you need your landscape managed or maintained, make sure you’re aware of recent changes in the industry.
Whether in response to recent drought conditions or simply a greater environmental awareness, the standard practices of landscape management and maintenance are evolving. “The landscaping industry as a whole is changing, and a lot of that is being driven by drought, especially in California,” says Scott Long, vice president of Central Coast Landscape and Maintenance, Inc. in Capitola. “Even though we got plenty of rain in 2016, it won’t change the water conservation and efficiency standards that have been put in motion. Basically, water conservation used to be a recommendation, but now, it’s a mandate.”

Because of revamped water conservation standards, “water management” has become a greater focus throughout California, which naturally affects the landscaping industry. Mr. Long explains some of the aspects of water management as it pertains to landscape maintenance: “Water management involves determining how much water a property is consuming and finding ways to minimize that. A lot of property owners are now hiring water managers because of the increased water prices in California. The state has set up a tiered pricing structure that’s based on water usage, so if you’re using more than you should be, it’s going to cost you exponentially. Water managers can help property owners reduce their properties’ consumption and, subsequently, their costs.”

Mr. Long says that in addition to becoming more “water wise,” the landscaping industry is becoming more conscientious about the use of chemicals for things like pest control and fertilization. “A lot of companies are switching to organic products and incorporating methods like integrated pest management, which regards chemical pesticides as a last resort rather than a first course of action. I think this shift represents a growing awareness of the impact our use of chemicals has on the planet. After all, everything we put in the ground ends up in the ocean at some point. By changing the way we do things now, we can hopefully reduce our impact on the environment down the road.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How soon can you start my landscaping project?
A: “It depends on a few factors, including how busy we are and what kinds of permits are required for your job. We’ll always be upfront with you about when we can start, and once we give you a date, we’ll stick to it.”

Q: How much will it cost to complete my project?
A: “Every job is different, so in order to determine how much yours will cost, we’ll need to meet with you and look at the jobsite.”

Q: How many people will be maintaining my property and how often will they be there?
A: “It depends on the size and scope of your property. Typically, we’re on site at least once a week, but for larger properties, it may be two or three times a week. It’s the same thing with the size of the crew—for a large property like a subdivision, we may send as many as five workers, whereas for a smaller property we may only send two. “

Q: Can you help me minimize water consumption on my property?
A: “Absolutely. We’re one of the only landscaping companies in our area that’s certified to offer water management services.”

Q: Can you use organic pesticides and fertilizers?
A: “Yes. In addition to being a licensed qualified applicator for pest control, we’re one of the first companies in our area to make the switch to organic products.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Scott Long

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Scott Long: A Verdant Venture

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

CAPITOLA — Scott Long started his career in construction, but when his livelihood dried up (literally), he shifted toward an adjacent professional field. “My background is in home building,” he says. “Around 1980, there was a water moratorium in Santa Cruz and they weren’t issuing any building permits, which really put a halt to new construction. I wanted to continue working outside, so when landscaping came up as an option, I decided to dive in. My father, Jack, and I established Central Coast Landscape and Maintenance in 1982 and we’ve been at it ever since.”

Today, Scott says his favorite thing about landscape work is being able to augment the natural beauty of the sites he services. “We live in a beautiful spot, so I like the fact that instead of tearing things up to make room for buildings, we actually get to enhance existing landscapes and keep them beautiful.”

A longtime resident of Santa Cruz (where he lives with his wife, Susan), Scott expresses his appreciation for its characteristic diversity. “Santa Cruz has the best of everything. It has the beach, the mountains and a very diverse population, all of whom seem to get along quite well.”

Outside of work, Scott spends his time on a variety of active pastimes. “Besides being an avid golfer, I have a longtime interest in off-road racing,” he says. “I raced motocross professionally when I was younger, and I’m still involved with a San Clemente-based team called the Desert Assassins.” Additionally, Scott enjoys spending time with his and Susan’s two grown children, Cameron and Chanel.

In regard to his professional career, Scott espouses the importance of maintaining his reputation. “At Central Coast, we pride ourselves on doing what we say we’re going to do and performing at a high level,” he explains. “Our reputation is very important to us, and after 35 years, we’ve managed to keep it in high regard in our local area.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Scott says he’d see the world. “I don’t plan on retiring any time soon, but if I did, I’d probably do some traveling. There are a bunch of golf courses I’d like to play, both here and abroad, so maybe I’d do a world golfing tour.”

  • The Benefits of Aerating Your Lawn

CAPITOLA — When it comes to a home’s landscape, there are few things worse than a patchy, unsightly lawn. Preventing this condition often requires supplementary measures to watering, such as fertilization. Another simple and effective way to invigorate your lawn is by using an aerator.

A lawn aerator is a machine that basically punches a bunch of small holes into your lawn. While this may not sound like anything special, it has a useful function: It allows water to penetrate the root bases of the plant material and fertilizer, breaking up the hard pack to ensure the entirety of the lawn gets irrigated. The overall effect of aeration leaves a lawn much healthier and more likely to thrive during the hot summer months.

  • Video: The Aeration Advantage

    Complete Video Transcription:

CAPITOLA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re looking for ways to promote the health and vitality of your lawn, consider the beneficial effects of aeration. Today we’re in Capitola with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Scott Long of Central Coast Landscaping and Maintenance to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Scott Long: Our expert tip for the day as spring is here is called aeration where you actually take an aeration machine, and it punches holes into your lawn, and it pulls out plugs. This allows water, when you start irrigating, to get into the root bases of the plant material and fertilizer. And it breaks up the hard pack. This will allow your lawn to be much healthier and thrive through the summer months when it’s hot.
