Make sure your fence contractor takes proactive measures such as maximizing the depth of fence posts, properly crowning post concrete and framing by hand rather than with a nail gun.&nbsp;&nbsp;
3. Preventive maintenance Proactive measures like keeping fence posts out of contact with soil, adjusting the trajectory of irrigation sprinklers and applying a stain every two to three years can substantially prolong the life span of your fence.&nbsp;

Redwood is known for being one of the best natural wood fencing materials available. However, since redwood comes in varying grades of quality, it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting when you hire a fence builder.
When it comes to garden applications like decks and fences, redwood grades run from Construction Heart at the high end to Merchantable Common on the low end. Grades with the “heart” designation consist wholly of heartwood from the center of the tree, whereas “common” grades are an amalgam of heartwood and sapwood (exterior wood). In general, the higher the grade, the fewer/smaller knots the wood contains and the more consistent its color.
Beyond the garden grades of redwood, there are architectural grades such as Heart B and Clear All Heart, which offer superior beauty and stability. However, because of their high cost, these grades are typically used for smaller applications like paneling, trim and cabinetry.&nbsp;
Due to the complex variety of redwood grades, you should plan to discuss this with your fencing contractor and make sure the proposal specifies the products to be used. In addition to grade, ask about fence board thickness, which is another critical aspect of fence quality.&nbsp;

For many folks in the Bay Area, the busiest room in the house is…the backyard. Grilling, playing and socializing outdoors puts neighbors in closer contact with each other, and while that can certainly lead to friendships, <a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/walking-the-property-line-how-to-avoid-neighbor-conflicts-during-home-projects/" target="_self">it can also cause friction</a>. But you know what they say, good fences make good neighbors. This article covers why you might choose to invest in a high-quality fence and what options are best for your type of yard.
Keep in mind that many municipalities and homeowners’ associations have specific rules regarding the construction of new fences, so check with your local governing body before you start building.
<h3>Fences for Pets</h3>
Dogs and humans take very different approaches to marking their property boundaries. The best way for your pet to enjoy the sights and smells of the outdoors without getting into trouble is by installing a good fence. As a pet owner, it’s your responsibility to prevent your dog from impeding on neighbors’ yards. Fences also keep pets safer, as they’re less likely to run into traffic or become lost. But the type of fencing you choose will depend upon your dog’s temperament.
Is your dog a barker? If your dog is agitated by every passing jogger, squirrel or fellow canine, you’ll need to select a fencing option that limits visibility. A wooden or vinyl privacy fence would be a good option.
Is your dog a jumper? If so, you’ll need to build your fence at the maximum permissible height. For most areas, that’s six feet high, although the limit will depend on your location. Placing shrubs in front of your fence will make it more difficult for your pets to escape your yard.
Is your dog a digger? Your best strategy is to install a fence that goes at least six inches deep or has a base layer made of a durable material like concrete. With diggers, it’s important to inspect wooden fences, as animals can escape through loose boards or injure themselves on splinters.
<h3>Fences for Security</h3>
If you’re concerned about trespassers on your property, you’ll want to choose a fence that’s strong and can be built to considerable height. Wrought iron or chain-link fencing is a popular choice for security fencing. While wrought iron is generally considered the more aesthetically pleasing choice, it’s also significantly more expensive than chain-link fencing. Note that both of these materials provide visibility, which may deter would-be intruders from loitering outside your property. No matter which option you choose, any fence will make it more difficult for others to reach your home.
<h3>Fences for Privacy</h3>
Homes are tightly packed in many Bay Area neighborhoods. Enjoying your backyard without the entire neighborhood watching is difficult without a good privacy fence.
Wooden tongue-and-groove fencing is a popular option for homeowners looking for more privacy. Such fences occlude visibility and can be constructed to the maximum permissible height. While affording maximum privacy, <a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/diamond-certified-experts-wood-fence-replacement-maintenance/" target="_self">wood fences do need regular maintenance</a>, including new coats of paint or sealant, board replacement and other touch-ups. Some homeowners go with vinyl privacy fences—they’re more expensive, but they offer the same seclusion with less regular maintenance. For the lowest-cost option, privacy slats can be added to chain-link fences.
When considering a privacy fence, make sure to account for the slope of your property in relationship to adjacent houses. If you’re upslope, you may be able to get away with constructing a shorter fence; if you’re downslope, neighbors may still be able to see into your yard even if you build the fence at the maximum permissible height. In the latter scenario, planting fast-growing trees may be a better option.
<h3>Fences and Fauna</h3>
If you live close to undeveloped land, you may be worried about coyotes finding your pets or deer rummaging through your garden. Both of these animals are great jumpers, so the typical six-foot fence will do little to deter their incursion onto your property. However, there are alterations you can make to your fence to make it harder for them to get in.
Fence extenders: These come in a variety of materials and styles. Choose extenders that branch out from the top of the fence at a 45-degree angle to prevent coyotes, deer and other wildlife from climbing into your yard.
Coyote rollers: These rotating tubes are installed at the top of the fence and prevent coyotes and other animals from grabbing onto the upper ledge. As an added benefit, they can also prevent more athletically gifted pets from escaping your yard.
<h3>Pool Fences</h3>
If your pool or spa doesn’t have a secure cover, California law dictates it must be enclosed by a fence. Pool fences must meet specific requirements that make it harder for children to gain access to the pool unsupervised. Homeowners may choose from <a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/prolong-the-lifespan-of-your-fence-with-quality-materials/" target="_self">a variety of materials</a>—vinyl, wood, mesh—but the fences need to meet height requirements and have self-closing latches placed beyond the reach of small children. Regulations apply to in-ground and above-ground pools as well as hot tubs. Check with your local municipality to see if there are any additional regulations required for pools in your city.
<h3>Think of the Neighbors</h3>
Your neighbors should be part of the discussion when you’re building a fence. Ideally, you and your neighbors will hit upon a fencing solution that everyone likes and agree to split construction and maintenance costs. If you plan on going it alone, it’s still common courtesy to inform your neighbors of your plans. Make sure the fence is installed with the “inside” part (where the framing is visible) facing your property. In the end, you’ll find that good fences really do make good neighbors.

<a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/good-fence/" target="_self">A wood fence serves many functions</a>: it creates privacy, increases security, delineates property lines and adds aesthetic beauty to a property. However, even the best wood fences don’t last forever, which is why homeowners should learn about the basics of fence replacement and maintenance. We asked three Diamond Certified Expert Contributors in the fencing industry to share their insights on this topic.
<h2>Knowing When to Replace Your Fence</h2>
While it’s often possible to repair a failing fence, in some cases it makes more sense to just replace it. Leland Char of AMM Fencing says one potential indicator of the latter scenario is a proliferation of decay. “Cracks and holes in a fence’s wood are typically signs of decay or rot,” he explains. “If one or two boards on your existing fence begin to decompose, you can generally fix the problem with wood, putty and steam. But if the problem extends beyond just a couple of boards, a repair probably won’t make fiscal sense. Furthermore, if you notice rotting or decay on the posts (which bear the weight of the entire fence), a domino effect is more than likely, and soon the whole length of the fence will begin to sag and sway.”
Mr. Char says another indicator that your fence needs to be replaced is if it’s leaning. “There are potential safety hazards that come with a leaning fence, so replacement is always recommended in this situation. Loose fence posts can be dangerous. During periods of heavy wind, they can become fully dislodged and carry large pieces of fence out of the ground. If this happens, there’s a risk of damage not only to your fence but to neighboring properties.”
<h2>Choosing Wood Fence Materials</h2>

Buying cheap fence materials may save you money in the short term, but it could end up costing you more if your fence fails prematurely. That’s why it’s wise to choose lumber that’s designed to last. When it comes to wood fencing, redwood is far and away the most popular lumber choice, and for good reason—not only is it beautiful to look at, it naturally repels harmful insects and resists rot. However, few consumers realize that redwood lumber comes in a wide variety of grades. For this reason, it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting when choosing a redwood product for your new fence.
Julian Meza of <a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/report/mezas-fence/" target="_self">Meza’s Fence</a> breaks down the hierarchy of redwood grades into their most basic form. “Grades designated as ‘heart,’ such as Construction Heart, are sourced from heartwood, which is the inner part of the tree,” he explains. “Grades designated as ‘common,’ such as Construction Common, are sourced from sapwood, which is the living outer layer of the tree. In general, the higher redwood grades contain fewer and smaller knots, and they also tend to be more consistent in color.”
Due to the variety of redwood grades available, Mr. Meza recommends discussing them in detail with your fence contractor. He also advises verifying that your contractor’s proposal specifies the wood products to be used on your fencing project.
<h2>Fence Installation Tips</h2>
Choosing lumber is the first of many steps involved in installing a new wood fence. Mr. Meza offers a couple of additional recommendations for ensuring a quality final product.
<ol>
<li>Insist on a better fastener. When building a fence, some contractors use nails while others use staples. However, since staples are smooth and thin, they’re more likely to come loose, especially as the wood contracts and expands in season. In contrast, galvanized nails provide a better grip and maintain a stronger bond between the wood materials.</li>
<li>Make sure post concrete is above soil level. When pouring concrete for the fence posts, make sure it comes up above soil level. This will keep dirt off of the posts and protect them from erosion. Ideally, post concrete should be formed in the shape of a hill to ensure water runs off the concrete instead of pooling.&nbsp;</li>

<h2>Maintaining Your Wood Fence</h2>

The amount of maintenance a wood fence requires depends on a couple of factors, including the type of wood it’s made of and the homeowner’s aesthetic preferences. While woods like cedar need to be recurrently stained or painted to protect against moisture, Bob Easley of <a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/report/california-fencing/" target="_self">California Fencing</a> says this isn’t the case with redwood. “Homeowners often assume they need to stain their redwood fences, but this is purely an aesthetic choice—it doesn’t actually help preserve the wood. The natural tannin contained in redwood enables it to resist the effects of weather, moisture and insects without the aid of sealants. Unstained redwood will eventually fade to an attractive gray, but its structural integrity will remain long after this occurs.” For those who choose to <a href="https://www.diamondcertified.org/how-to-artificially-age-wood/" target="_self">stain their redwood fences for aesthetic reasons</a>, Mr. Easley recommends restaining every five years to maintain the desired coloration.
Mr. Easley has one final piece of advice for maintaining your wood fence. “If you have lawn sprinklers, make sure your fence isn’t in their line of fire,” he cautions. “Continuous exposure to sprinkler spray can cause fence boards to rot and fail prematurely, so adjust your sprinklers’ trajectory if needed.”
