Tony Enger: Bridging the Gap
By Julie Deacon, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter
When something goes wrong with an electrical system, most homeowners aren’t looking for technical explanations—they just want someone who can fix the problem and restore a sense of normalcy. For Tony Enger, that moment of uncertainty is where his work begins. “A lot of times, people call me when something is wrong and they don’t know what to do,” he says. “My job is to diagnose the issue, fix it and take care of them, just like a doctor would.”
That mindset has guided Tony’s career, even though his entry into the electrical industry was anything but planned. While attending college in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he picked up a part-time job with a local electrical company through a family acquaintance. What started as simple shop work—fueling trucks and organizing parts—quickly grew into something more. “I just kept taking on more responsibility,” he recalls. “I’d work summers, holidays…whenever I could.”
With a strong interest in computer science, Tony soon found himself bridging the gap between traditional electrical work and emerging technologies. When his company took on a complex hospital project involving nurse call and fire alarm systems, he stepped in. “They didn’t really understand that side of it, but I said, ‘This is basically computer science,’” he says. “Before long, I was running the project.”
After graduating, Tony continued working with the company before relocating with his wife, Gretchen, to pursue new opportunities. That move eventually led him to Harrison Electric Inc., where he steadily grew into a leadership role and, over time, ownership. “It wasn’t something I set out to do from the beginning,” he admits. “However, it evolved naturally as I gained experience and took on more responsibility.”
Today, Tony brings a methodical, problem-solving approach to every project, grounded in both technical expertise and a commitment to doing things the right way. He says his philosophy centers on humility and accountability. “We’re not perfect, but we aim to keep our promises and make sure each job is done correctly.”
That approach resonates not only with clients, but also within his own household. Tony and Gretchen have been married for nearly 30 years and raised two daughters, Bella and Lexi, in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis. Their home life is busy and driven, with one daughter already working as an EMT while completing multiple degrees and pursuing a future in medicine. “We’re always on the go,” he says. “There’s always something happening.”
Outside of work, much of Tony’s free time is dedicated to an ongoing home renovation project—a long-term effort that has become something of a personal endeavor. When he does find time to unwind, he prefers simple moments spent with family and friends, whether grabbing a meal together or planning the occasional trip.
At the end of the day, Tony’s work is driven by a straightforward goal: helping people navigate problems with clarity and confidence. “We’re here to figure things out,” he says. “Ultimately, it’s about making sure our customers feel cared for.”
