Jose Serrano: Seizing the Opportunity

The COVID-19 pandemic caused countless professionals to hit the pause button on their careers, but for Jose Serrano, it was the final push he needed to capitalize on his decades of industry experience. “I started working in construction when I was 21 years old,” he explains. “Originally, I worked for a contractor, but it wasn’t long before I started taking on small side projects like painting rooms. Over the years, those people kept in touch and started offering me more work, which kept me pretty busy. Then, when the pandemic hit in 2020, I found myself sitting at home wondering how I was going to get work. That’s when I decided to get my contractor’s license and open my own business.”

Today, as owner of J A Serrano Construction, Jose says his favorite part of his job is the diversity of the work. “Every day is different—one day we’ll be handling electrical tasks and the next day we’ll be focused on plumbing. I like the challenges and it feels great when our clients are happy with our work. When they give me a hug and tell me they’re going to recommend us to their friends and family, it makes me feel proud of my entire team.”

Originally from Mexico City, Jose spent some time in Texas before settling in Santa Rosa in 2008. He says his favorite part of life in the Bay Area is the versatility of his surroundings. “There’s not a lot of traffic where I live and the weather is really nice, so it’s a peaceful place to be.” Outside of work, Jose’s favorite pastimes are playing soccer and spending time with his wife, Magali, and their 11-year-old child.

When asked to describe his personal or professional philosophy, Jose recalls the wise words of a beloved family member. “My father always said that if you do right by others, you’re going to get it back in return,” he offers. “That’s how I live my life and run my business. If I focus on being a generous person and giving back to those around me, that positivity will come back my way.”

Q: What’s your favorite soccer team?
A: The LA Galaxy.

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: A dog person. We have a chihuahua named Max and a Pomeranian named Odie.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Barcelona.

Q: If you were a professional soccer player, what number would you wear on your jersey?
A: 16. That’s my birthday and my wife’s birthday, so it’s a special number.

Q: What’s the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
A: I got some really nice tequila one year.
