Replacing a light switch may seem straightforward, but it’s important to understand what kind of switch you have before you change it out.
• Single-pole switch: Controls a light from one location.
• Three-way switch: Controls a light from two locations.
• Four-way switch: Controls a light from three or more locations.
• Dimmer switch: May have specific wiring and compatibility requirements.
Before removing any light switch:
1. Turn off the correct circuit breaker and use an approved voltage tester to verify that the power is off.
2. Never assume a circuit is safe simply because the light doesn’t turn on. The wiring should be carefully identified and labeled so the incoming power, or “line,” isn’t confused with the “load” wire that carries power to the light fixture.
Always follow the new switch’s manufacturer instructions, since wire colors and terminal arrangements can vary. If you can’t confidently identify the wiring or you’re dealing with a complicated setup, hire a licensed electrician.
