Video: Upgrading Your Plumbing Pipes

with David Langdale of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing

Are you familiar with the type of water piping that is in your home? There's two variations that have been used for many years, uh, and most recently is copper piping, uh, which is the preferred method. But prior to 1970s, there was galvanized piping was being used for both your water and your drainage system. And while this was a good product at the time, it did have a shelf life of roughly 50 years and we're well past that.

Now, what eventually happens with galvanized piping is it creates a corrosion inside of the pipe. The mineral buildup will eventually close up on itself as well as it will cause leaks. Copper is the preferred method, uh, for today's standards and industry, uh, as far as building goes, and it, uh, will not corrode in the sense of closing up on itself. So if you're unsure, you should have a plumber out and take a look and do an inspection and figure out what type of piping you have.

Plumbing fails for three major reasons, and that's gonna be age, debris, and pressure, all of which can affect the type of piping you have in your home. If you have galvanized piping, it's gonna close up as mentioned, and you're gonna lose pressure. And so what I would suggest is based on the year your home was built, if it was prior to 1970, I would have a plumber come out and do an inspection of your home's plumbing system and verify what type of material you have and look at the benefits of replacing the galvanized piping over to copper with new standards.
