The Importance of Flushing Your Water Heater

By David Langdale

Flushing your water heater may not be high on your home maintenance list, but it plays a crucial role in preserving the efficiency and lifespan of your unit. Here’s what you need to know about the process:

Why does flushing matter?
Over time, minerals and sediment from your water supply settle at the bottom of your water heater’s tank. This is especially common in areas with hard water, which contains higher concentrations of calcium and magnesium. These deposits can create a layer of insulating material that forces your water heater to work harder, which reduces energy efficiency. Worse, the sediment can corrode the tank’s steel lining, accelerating rust and eventually leading to leaks or tank failure. Tankless water heaters aren’t immune either—they can accumulate scale inside the heat exchanger, which decreases heating efficiency and can lead to system errors or shutdowns.

How often should you flush?
The recommended flushing frequency depends on your local water quality. Once a year is the standard recommendation for most homes and water conditions—this keeps sediment from building up to damaging levels. Every six months is ideal if you live in a region with very hard water or notice signs of buildup like popping noises or reduced hot water output.

Professional or DIY?
You can flush your own water heater if you use the right tools and precautions, but many people prefer to schedule it as part of annual plumbing maintenance. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, the key is consistency.
