Quality Concrete Starts With Quality Materials

If you’re taking on a concrete or masonry project, keep in mind that its long-term strength and safety will rely on what’s underneath. Here are a few things to go over with a contractor before making a hiring decision:

Ask about the base. Any concrete surface needs a properly prepared and compacted base. If the soil or base material isn’t stable, the concrete may settle, shift or crack over time.

Confirm the reinforcement. When rebar is required, it must be the correct size and installed at the proper spacing and depth. Rebar helps reinforce the concrete and limit movement caused by weight, shifting soil, and seismic activity. Simply placing rebar somewhere inside the slab isn’t enough—the contractor should follow the project plans and applicable building requirements.

Discuss the concrete mix. Concrete should be selected and mixed according to the project’s intended use. The wrong mix or excess water can weaken the finished surface, making it more vulnerable to cracking and premature deterioration.

For stonework, your contractor should also use a mortar or masonry adhesive that’s designed for the specific stone and application. Using an unsuitable product or applying it incorrectly can cause stones to loosen and fall, creating a serious safety hazard.
