Keep Your Dog’s Crate a Safe Space

By David Weiss

Dogs naturally like having a protected space where they can settle down while still keeping an eye on what’s happening around them, so crate training is a great way to give your pet a comfortable place to relax. The key is to make the crate feel like a positive, welcoming retreat rather than a place your dog is forced to go.

The biggest mistake you can make is using the crate as punishment. If your dog starts connecting its crate with negative experiences, it won’t feel safe anymore, which can add to its anxiety. Also, when correcting your dog, avoid yelling or physical punishment. Dogs respond much better to positive reinforcement, so focus on encouraging and rewarding good behavior.
