3 Things to Know About Asbestos Abatement

If your home or building contains asbestos, professional abatement is critical for maintaining your health and safety. Here are three key things to understand about the process:

1. Proper containment
The first step in asbestos abatement is setting up a sealed environment to prevent fibers from spreading. Professionals use heavy plastic sheeting to enclose the area, seal vents and doorways, and install negative air machines to keep contaminated air from escaping.

2. The “wet method”
To safely remove asbestos, technicians apply water or a specialized wetting agent to the material. This reduces the chance of asbestos fibers becoming airborne during removal. The wet method is a critical part of the abatement process and should always be used by certified professionals.

3. Thorough cleanup
Once the asbestos is removed, the area must be meticulously cleaned. This includes using a HEPA vacuum on all surfaces, safely disposing of contaminated materials and performing air clearance tests. A proper cleanup ensures no hazardous fibers remain and the space is safe for reentry.
