Keeping pests out of your home often comes down to preventive maintenance. While infestations can develop for many reasons, two proactive steps can go a long way toward protecting your property:
1. Maintain your landscaping and outdoor areas. Fleas, ticks and other bugs can hitch a ride when your dog or cat goes outdoors, so if you’ve noticed your pets scratching excessively, it may be a sign that pests are making their way inside. The best way to prevent this is to make sure your landscaping is well maintained. Trim back bushes, keep your lawn tidy and remove piles of leaves or debris where insects can thrive.
2. Seal and protect your home’s exterior. Even the smallest gaps around windows, siding or eaves can create easy entry points for pests. To reduce this risk, make sure all windows and doors have intact caulking and weatherstripping. Also, don’t forget about your gutters—keeping them clean reduces moisture that can attract insects and fungus growth.
