Roy Nelson: All in the Family

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN JOSE – For Roy Nelson, installing hardwood flooring isn’t just a job—it’s a family tradition. “My family background consists of electricians, drywallers, framers and hardwood flooring installers, so I basically grew up around all those trades,” he explains. “Because of my roots, I consider my company a family business and continue to practice the same values and traditions that I was mentored with.” After 20 years, clients of Roy’s Woodcraft Flooring, Inc. continue to benefit from Roy’s combination of expert knowledge and old-school principles.

A native of the Bay Area, Roy lives in San Jose with his wife, Ai, and their four children. He says one of the things he appreciates most about the area is the melting pot mentality that characterizes it. “The Bay Area is a culturally rich and diverse place, but it also has a very inclusive mindset. There aren’t many areas in the country like it. New York might have a similar amount of diversity, but it doesn’t blend the way it does here.”

When he’s not finishing or installing hardwood flooring, Roy is likely to be found outdoors, whether hiking, biking or swimming. He also stays actively involved with his kids’ scout troops. “Between my four kids, I have Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, so I help out with a lot of their activities, from campouts to canned food drives and other charity events,” he says.

When asked the first thing he would do if he could retire tomorrow, Roy says he would head for the Big Island. “I love the island of Hawaii. It’s not that I’m much of a surfer, although I might be if the water wasn’t so cold here. I just really enjoy the laid-back vibe, plus there are a lot of great opportunities for hiking and swimming.”

Calvin Hoang: From High-Tech to Hardwood

By James Florence, Senior Writer

Calvin Hoang spent a long time aiming for a high-tech career, but he ultimately landed a more hands-on livelihood. “My father is a hardwood flooring professional, and I started working for him on the side while attending college,” he recounts. “After earning my degree in computer technology, I got a job in the high-tech industry but ended up being laid off. I returned to school, this time to pursue a degree in technical management, and also went back to working for my dad. After earning my second degree, I tried to get another high-tech job, but there was a lot of competition. One day I realized I had all this experience working with hardwood floors, so I decided to quit the high-tech hustle and start my own business.”

Today, as owner of C H Hardwood Floors, Calvin says his favorite part of his job is the freedom that comes with being his own boss. “I like being able to set my own schedule. Even though running a business is a lot of work, I find it less stressful than working in high-tech. Of course, I also enjoy the satisfaction of transforming old floors by making them look new again.”

Originally from Vietnam, Calvin resides today in San Jose with his wife and daughter. Outside of work, his two favorite pastimes are traveling and technology. “My family and I love to travel, and we’ve been everywhere from Mexico to Europe to Egypt,” he details. “I’m also very involved with technology—even though it’s no longer my job, it’s still my main hobby. I always have a new project going. For example, I recently built a solar generator, which I use to power the microwave in my work van.”

In regard to his professional career, Calvin espouses the importance of customer service. “When it comes to running a business, customer service and communication are just as important as the nuts and bolts of the job. It doesn’t matter how skilled or qualified you are—if you don’t know how to treat customers, they’re not going to be happy. That’s why I prioritize customer service and communication on every job.”

When asked what his life might look like if he were to retire tomorrow, Calvin says he’d split his time between travel and charity. “As I said before, I love traveling and there are still a lot of places I’d like to see. I’d also like to help in my community. My wife works for a nonprofit that provides food for the poor, so it’d be neat to be a part of that as well. Of course, I’d keep building computers and other gadgets just for fun.”

Gary Jones: A Hardwood Education

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

ANTIOCH — Gary Jones’ professional account is a model example of “do what you know,” which, in his case, was hardwood flooring. “In high school, I had a friend whose father owned a floor covering business and I started working for him during the summers,” he remembers. “After graduating, I didn’t have any set plans, so I decided to continue in the flooring trade. I trained for quite a few years and stuck with it. Eventually, after 25 years in the industry, I made the move to start my own business.”

Today, as owner of Jones Floor Designs, Gary says his favorite part of his job is seeing the final product. “I enjoy transforming a floor that’s in poor condition into something that looks great. It’s very fulfilling to see the results of my work and know the homeowner is going to love it as well.”

A lifelong resident of Northern California, Gary currently resides in Antioch with his wife, Heidi. “I moved to the Bay Area from Southern California when I was 15,” he remembers. “I spent my young adult years in Clayton, which was a nice, country setting. In general, I like this part of the Bay Area because it’s less urban than other areas.”

Outside of work, Gary likes to spend as much time as possible outside. “I’m an outdoors kind of person, and I enjoy dirt biking, boating and camping,” he affirms. “I’ve been riding dirt bikes since I was nine years old, and it’s still one of my favorite activities.” Additionally, Gary enjoys spending time with his five grown children. “The kids all have their own lives now, so we don’t see them as much as we’d like to, but we manage to get together fairly regularly.”

In regard to a professional philosophy, Gary espouses the importance of reliability. “I pride myself on being a man of my word,” he says. “When I say I’m going to be at the jobsite at a certain time, I’m there as promised. Ultimately, it’s about keeping customers happy, and following up my word with my actions is an important part of that.”

When asked the first thing he’d do if he were to retire tomorrow, Gary says he’d warm up the RV. “I would definitely travel—that’s something I haven’t had much time for since I started my business. Heidi and I bought an RV a few years back and we’ve been eager to put some mileage on it, so maybe we’d take a road trip across the country.”
