The company customizes its service packages to meet each client’s specific needs, and it offers complimentary consultations to those who need help assessing their financial situations.

Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services takes a detail-oriented approach to the tax process in order to get its clients the best possible returns. “That’s another benefit of developing relationships with my clients—I can use their input to get them the best tax benefits that are legally allowed,” says Ms. Passarell. “Ultimately, I want every client to feel like they’ve received a great value for the service I provided.”

Comparative Summary

Maintaining customer satisfaction is a crucial aspect of any business, but it’s even more important for tax preparation firms that have earned the prestigious Diamond Certified award. For Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services, the best way to keep clients happy is to look beyond the numbers. “I consider myself an advocate for my clients, so I actively look for ways to help them make the most of their tax returns,” says Principal Virginia Passarell. “They know they can rely on me year after year to provide accurate service and look out for their best interests, and they really appreciate that.”

Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services has been preparing and filing taxes, organizing bookkeeping and accounting systems, and providing various financial management services for individuals and small businesses in Sonoma County since 2011. The firm offers customized service packages to meet each client’s specific needs. Complimentary consultations are available to those who need help assessing their financial situations.

Unlike larger tax preparation firms that take a rigid approach to every job, Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services prioritizes its clients’ individual needs and adjusts its services accordingly. “Most ‘big box’ firms operate with a ‘one size fits all’ mentality,” explains Ms. Passarell. “In contrast, I serve every client on an individual basis so I can stay attuned to their particular circumstances and tailor my services accordingly.”

Another distinguishing attribute of Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services is its careful approach to quality control. “As a one-woman operation, I have to be extra proactive about accuracy,” says Ms. Passarell. “Whenever I finish a return, I put it aside and come back a couple of hours later to review it. I re-check every line and make sure everything is perfect, from the numbers to the spelling.”

Industry Info
If you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, there’s an alternative to waiting for your tax refund.
As of 2017, those who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) on their tax returns may have to wait longer than they anticipated to receive their refunds. “Under government mandate, the IRS will be holding refunds for those claiming EITC and ACTC until February 28,” explains Virginia Passarell, principal of Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services in Santa Rosa. “So, even if you filed on January 1, you won’t see your refund until at least early March, after the IRS begins distribution. While this rule change is intended to reduce tax fraud, it can put a strain on those who depend on their yearly refunds, especially low-income families.”

Fortunately, as Ms. Passarell explains, there’s an option that allows qualified tax filers to receive their tax credit refunds earlier. “If you’re an employee of a company and you qualify for EITC, you can apply for an advance on your refund,” she says. “The Advance EITC allows taxpayers with at least one qualifying child to receive their refunds in the form of reduced pay withholdings throughout the year. Basically, a portion of the refund will be included in each paycheck. When you file your tax return the following year, you simply declare that you already received your EITC.”

To apply for Advance EITC, you need to fill out a Form W-5 and give it to your employer. Keep in mind that if you receive advance EITC payments, you must file a Form 1040 or 1040A income tax return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I haven’t filed taxes in years. Can you help me?
A: “Yes. You’re not alone—a substantial portion of my clients come to me with back taxes that need to be filed. I can guide you in gathering the needed information and get your returns filed.”

Q: Will you be able to represent me if I get audited?
A: “Yes, I can represent any return that I’ve prepared, but I always try to avoid audits in the first place. I keep an eye out for irregularities that may trigger questions. If I see a potential red flag, I’ll contact the client for clarification.”

Q: Do you file returns electronically or by mail?
A: “The IRS now requires every tax preparer to file returns electronically. I review the tax return with each client and e-file after their review and authorization.”

DIAMOND CERTIFIED EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR ADVICE & TIPS FROM Virginia Passarell

Expert CONTRIBUTOR PROFILE

Virginia Passarell: Accounting for Success

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SANTA ROSA — After 15 years working in the dental industry, Virginia Passarell took a bold step to broaden her professional opportunities. “As the manager of a group dental practice, I sort of hit the ceiling in terms of upward mobility, so I decided to go into a new field,” she explains. “I went back to school, earned a degree in Management and Accounting, and got a job working at a corporate CPA firm. I loved the work, but I didn’t love being in a cubicle. Three years later I became a corporate controller, where I managed the accounting departments for several large corporations. This was much more to my liking, but when the economy turned and those corporations closed down, I found myself wondering what to do next. Ultimately, I opted to open my own tax preparation firm, which turned out to be a wonderful decision.”

Today, as owner of Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services, Virginia says that while she likes working with numbers (“They sit still and do what I tell them.”), her favorite part of her job is working with people. “I really enjoy helping my clients. Many of them come in feeling anxious about the process, so I like being able to sit down with them, walk them through the steps and put their minds at ease.”

A resident of Santa Rosa (where she lives with her husband, Jim), Virginia expresses her appreciation for life in Sonoma County. “After being here so long, I’ve developed a lot of close relationships with people, including many clients who have become good friends. I never want to move. I’d feel lost if I lived somewhere where I didn’t bump into familiar faces at the grocery store or on the street.”

Outside of work, Virginia fills her free time with a variety of active interests and pastimes. “I enjoy sewing, quilting, cooking and playing mahjong,” she says. “I actually belong to a group of ladies who get together monthly to play mahjong. I also love art—there are a lot of great artists in this area, so I enjoy meeting new artists and collecting artwork.” Additionally, Virginia likes spending time with Jim and their daughter, Andrea. “Andrea recently graduated from UCLA with a degree in linguistics. She speaks Spanish, French and Japanese. I joke that she dabbles in English, because a 25-year-old’s usage of the language is a bit different than mine.”

In regard to her professional career, Virginia espouses the value of professional equanimity. “I’m very calm and composed when working with clients and discussing their taxes,” she explains. “My goal is to remove all of their fear and anxiety regarding the process. It gives my clients peace of mind knowing they can come in and drop their problems in my lap.”

When asked the first thing she’d do if she were to retire tomorrow, Virginia says she’d recharge her batteries before filling her social calendar. “I’d probably lay in bed for a couple of days and then start scheduling activities and get-togethers with friends. Of course, I would certainly miss my clients, so I’d be proactive about maintaining those relationships as well.”

Ask Me Anything!

Q: Are you a dog person or a cat person?
A: A cat person. My current cat, Fumi, is a beautiful, bright-eyed Ragdoll.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
A: Cook with friends. Although, if it’s Sunday, it’s watching football—I’m a big football fan.

Q: What’s your favorite type of food?
A: Seafood.

Q: Do you collect anything?
A: Cookbooks—I have more than 300 of them! One of my goals is to thin out my collection, but I’m a bit of a hoarder, so it’s easier said than done.

  • Taking Advantage of Tax-Deductible Spaces

SANTA ROSA — Many sole proprietors shy away from taking the home office deduction because they think it’s a red flag for a tax audit. However, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be taking every legitimate deduction you’re entitled to. Additionally, there may be more tax-deductible opportunities available to you than you realize.

A home office isn’t the only instance where a part of your home is considered tax-deductible. The fact is, you can deduct any area that’s designated exclusively to work-related activities or supplies. This includes partial rooms (for example, if your home office is in your dining room) or even a closet that’s used to store work-related materials. Likewise, if you park your work truck in your garage or use part of your garage to store work-related equipment, this also counts as tax-deductible square footage.

Video: Taking Advantage of Tax Deductions

Complete Video Transcription:

SANTA ROSA — Host, Sarah Rutan: If you’re a business owner or independent contractor, make sure you’re taking advantage of every available deduction when filing your tax return. Today we’re in Santa Rosa with Diamond Certified Expert Contributor Virginia Passarell of Passarell Tax & Bookkeeping Services to learn more.

Diamond Certified Expert Contributor, Virginia Passarell: Many sole proprietors shy away from taking the home office deduction, believing that it’s a red flag for a tax audit. But you really should be taking every legitimate deduction that you’re entitled to. For example, the deduction of a room used exclusively for your home office – or even, for that matter, a portion of the room – is a legitimate deduction, and you should be taking it.
