A Simple Technique to Alleviate Eye Fatigue

Whether working at a computer, watching TV or texting on the phone, we spend a lot of our time these days peering into the radiant displays of electronic devices. The problem is the human eye isn’t suited to continuously stare at a glowing screen that’s two feet away. Whereas the eye is most relaxed when looking at distant objects, looking at things close up activates muscles that become tired after hours of sustained engagement, which can result in a condition known as “eye fatigue.”
While protective eyewear such as computer glasses can help alleviate the effects of eye fatigue, another important measure is to give your eyes short breaks throughout the day. To do this, practice the “20-20-20” rule: after every 20 minutes of screen time, look away and focus on something at least 20 feet away for a minimum of 20 seconds. Routinely refocusing your eyes in this manner will allow them to relax, leaving you more comfortable and less fatigued by the end of the day.
