William Giakoumatos: Born Builder

William Giakoumatos was introduced to construction long before he was old enough to consider it a career. “My dad would take my brother and I to jobsites on Saturday mornings when we wanted to stay home and watch cartoons,” he details. “We were basically born and raised with hammers in our hands.”

William officially entered the construction industry in the mid-1990s, while his younger brother, Demetri, followed suit in 2002 after earning his master’s degree from George Washington University. Today, the two proudly continue the legacy their parents established when they founded American Custom Contractors in 1972. “Following in our parents’ footsteps felt natural,” says William. “We’re both passionate about helping homeowners transform their properties and exceeding their expectations.”

The Giakoumatos family’s involvement in American Custom Contractors now spans three generations: William’s son, Alex, has worked for the company for several years and currently serves as a project manager. “Having three generations under one business name is pretty special,” he says.

A resident of Rockville, William says he appreciates the deep roots he has established in the Montgomery County area. “I grew up in Gaithersburg, so this has always felt like home. My family is here, I have a large network of friends and professional connections, and the office is close by. I feel very connected to the community.”

Outside of work, William and his wife, Flavia, lead an active life that includes spending time with family, participating in church and enjoying the outdoors. “Managing a sales team takes quite a bit of my time, but I try to play tennis, lift weights and go fishing when I can,” he details. “I also like cooking—it’s in my DNA as a Greek. I even make my own tzatziki.”

When it comes to a personal or professional philosophy, William believes character is demonstrated through pure intentions. “I always try to do the right thing, even when no one is looking,” he offers. “I’m just passionate about performing at a high level.”

Q: What’s the first thing you’d do if you could retire tomorrow?
A: I’d step into another facet of construction, like building a custom home or completing a major remodel.

Q: Have you ever read a book more than once?
A: I’ve read “Way of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman more than once. It touched my heart and resonated with me a lot.

Q: If you could immediately travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Brazil. My wife is from there and I’d like to meet her family.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: I’m a big Washington Commanders fan, but I also try to support the Washington Wizards, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Capitals.

Q: What’s your favorite local restaurant?
A: All the Kebabs.
