Miguel Garcia: Turning Experience Into Opportunity
By Julie Deacon, Diamond Certified Research Writer
For Miguel Garcia, a steady career in the termite industry grew out of an early opportunity and a willingness to make the most of it. “I was 19 years old, so it was either get a job or go to college,” he recalls. “I ended up working for a company that did construction and termite treatments, and that’s really how I got started back in 2005.”
What began as a straightforward decision quickly evolved into a career built on experience and confidence. Over time, Miguel developed a strong understanding of the pest control industry, learning the ins and outs of termite treatment while gaining hands-on knowledge in the field. It wasn’t long before he began to notice a shift. “I saw guys who I had trained starting their own companies,” he says. “I knew more than they did, so I thought, ‘If they can do it, I can do it, too.’”
That realization, along with conversations with his brother, ultimately pushed Miguel to take the leap into business ownership. Today, as owner of Horizon Termite Control, he draws on nearly two decades of experience to serve homeowners throughout the Bay Area. While the work can be demanding, he says one of the most rewarding aspects of his job is the sense of independence it offers. “We travel all over the Bay Area, so I get to see places I’ve never been before. I also have a lot of time to myself during the day, which I enjoy.”
Miguel has spent nearly 40 years in the Bay Area and currently lives in Newark. Staying rooted in his community has always been important to him. “I like being in the same area where I grew up,” he affirms. “It’s my hometown and everything I know is here.”
Family is at the center of Miguel’s life. He and his wife, Yuli, have three children—Isaiah, Daniel and Lily—with a fourth on the way. Outside of work, his focus is simple. “I like spending time with my family,” he says. “That’s the most important thing to me.”
As Horizon Termite Control continues to grow, Miguel approaches both his business and personal life with a clear guiding principle. “I always try to treat others the way I’d like to be treated,” he explains. “Whether it’s customers, employees, friends or family, that’s what matters most.”
