Buying a new or used car? Think you bought a lemon? Wondering about safety recalls? If you’ve ever owned a car or are about to, you’ve probably looked for some outside advice. Fortunately, there are many resources for consumers who are shopping for or own cars.

You might say that Consumer Reports online is one of the best references for objective ratings of new and used cars. The April edition is always the “auto issue” that highlights the best and worst cars, trucks, and SUVs. Their scores account for reader survey results as well as road test results. The best used vehicles are also ranked and model years are compared going back to 2018.

Another useful website for savvy car shoppers and owners is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This nonprofit conducts extensive testing of vehicles’ crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation. Ratings are made available to the public. IIHS also reports on topics such as distracted driving, seat belts, red light running and child safety. The organization has been conducting this research for 50 years. They even have a “Crash Science” curriculum for students and teachers.

The third group to know about is the Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit founded by Ralph Nader in the ’70s. The group focuses on car-related advocacy work. For example, they’ve come up with a much-needed Consumer Bill of Rights for autonomous vehicles. You can also search for active safety recalls, learn about “lemon laws” and find out about class action lawsuits for particular vehicles.

If you want to get into these car topics a little deeper, you might enjoy listening to the Center for Auto Safety’s podcast, “There Auto Be a Law.” It’s available on the website as well as on Apple, Spotify, Google and Amazon Music.

Use Diamond Certified Resource to find top rated companies

Local, Top Rated Diamond Certified Companies Related to Your Topic
San Mateo County Auto Repair Shops
Santa Clara County Auto Repair Shops
Contra Costa County Auto Repair Shops
Sonoma County Auto Repair Shops
San Francisco Auto Repair Shops

Related Articles
The Essential Guide to New and Used Car Buying
Get Expert Advice From Owners of Top Rated Local Companies
Become a Diamond Certified Preferred Member (Always Free)
