Industry Spotlight: National Roofing Contractors Association

NRCA logoThe National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is a nonprofit trade organization that has been advocating for roofing professionals since 1886. This big-tent organization represents not only roofing contractors but all professionals that play a part in the roofing industry, including engineers, consultants, material distributors and architects. Its members come from 53 countries and all 50 states. The NRCA’s primary goal is to advocate for those working in the roofing industry and help its members better serve their customers.

Technical Expertise and Education

The NRCA has created and organized a wealth of technical information on best roofing practices, all of which are available to roofing professionals and consumers. The NRCA has published numerous roofing manuals and provides information on building codes worldwide. Read more

“A lot of people will look at what their neighbors are doing and figure those must be the best roofing products, but that’s not necessarily true,” says Mr. Proctor. “This ‘follow the leader’ mentality is the reason more people install asphalt shingles today than 20 years ago. Asphalt may look nice and be easier to walk on, but it’s not a good insulator, and most homeowners fail to take that into account. Preparing Your Home for a (Potentially) Wet Winter

We originally posted this in 2015, when we had high hopes that El Niño would put an end to the drought. As it turned out, the winter of 2016-17 was the real drought-buster! We don’t know what’s in store for this winter, but needless to say, preparing for a wet winter is always a good idea.

California residents have spent the last four years enduring one of the worst droughts in state history. However, if recent forecasts are correct, we won’t be suffering for much longer. Citing a strong El Niño climate pattern developing in the Pacific Ocean, climatologists are predicting what could be the wettest winter California has seen in nearly two decades. Read more

Residential Solar Power: The Basics

With California experiencing one of the worst droughts in recorded history, it’s a great time to explore converting to solar. Not only can solar power help put the brakes on climate change, it’s also one of the least “thirsty” methods of generating electricity. According to Diamond Certified solar company Sungevity, coal-fired power plants require 100 to 1,000 gallons of water to generate one megawatt-hour of electricity. Solar, by comparison, requires zero gallons of water to produce the same amount of electricity (more details).
