Dr. Peter Panagotacos: True Growth

By James Florence, Diamond Certified Resource Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO – Dr. Peter Panagotacos has been performing hair transplants for more than 40 years, during which time he’s gained prominence as a leading authority in his field. Still, even with all his accomplishments, he continues to find fulfillment in the smallest of places. “I get great satisfaction from simple gestures of gratitude from my patients, whether it’s a Christmas card or an out-of-the-blue phone call,” he says. “I worked very hard to get to the top of my field, and I teach around the world, but the thing that keeps me going is the patient who says, ‘Thank you very much, you changed my life.’”

When Peter first entered medical school in the 1960s, the hair replacement industry was still in its infancy. “It was so new that there weren’t any formal training programs in place for dermatology students to learn how to do hair transplants,” he explains. “Fortunately, I had the advantage of working with a fellow who was one of the first people in the United States to perform a hair transplant in the late ’50s.” Following graduation, Peter set up his dermatology practice in San Francisco, where he decided to include hair transplantation as one of his services. It wasn’t long before he was doing more hair transplants than anybody else in San Francisco. Today, Dr. Panagotacos’ patients continue to benefit from his extensive expertise.

A lifetime resident of the City by the Bay, Peter is a San Franciscan in the fullest sense of the word. “This is my home town—I live on the same block I grew up on,” he says. “I was here when San Francisco was still a place where everybody knew each other. It was a completely different atmosphere.” While the setting has since changed, Peter continues to enjoy the things that make San Francisco one of the finest cities in the country. “San Francisco has all the benefits of a large small town, yet it’s still a world-class city. I travel all over the world, but I’m always happy to come home.”

Outside of his profession, Peter enjoys a variety of interests and pastimes, from showing his fleet of vintage Triumph Mayflower cars to retailing his own line of olive oil. One of his principal pursuits is traveling, to which he devotes an average of two months each year. “Some of my more memorable excursions have been a dinosaur dig in Mongolia, where I found a fossilized dinosaur egg, and a two-month trip that began in Uzbekistan and ended in China,” he says. “However, the most exciting place I’ve been by far is the Congo, where I spent some time living among a Pygmy tribe in the early ’70s.”

When asked the first thing he would do if he could retire tomorrow, Peter says he would continue to share the benefits of hair transplantation in one way or another. “I’m always being invited to teach at locations throughout the world, so even if I didn’t come to work in my office, I would probably be teaching and performing hair transplantation somewhere else.”

Know What You Want
Questions to Ask Yourself Before Selecting a Hair Transplant Company in Sonoma County

Many factors should be contemplated before selecting a hair replacement clinic in Sonoma County, including the larger cities Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor, and Healdsburg. Be sure to do your research carefully so that you can decide which physician will be able to accommodate your needs the most successfully. Because everyone is different, write down everything that you’re searching for before you begin your research:

  • Do I want a Diamond Certified company that is rated best in quality and backed by the Diamond Certified Guarantee?
  • Am I too young to have a hair transplant?
  • What are my financial options? The cost of hair transplantation can be expensive and is not covered by insurance.

  • How many grafts will I need? Depending on the severity, the procedure may need to be done in stages.

What To Ask In Person
Questions to ask Sonoma County Hair Transplant Doctors in Person

The next step is to interview hair transplantation physicians in the cities of Sonoma, Cloverdale, Sebastopol, Cotati, and Guerneville and other areas of Sonoma County.
If possible, don't go alone for this interview. Bring along a friend or family member for moral support. Two people will hear and remember more.
Questions you may want to ask are:

  • What types of procedures do you perform for hair transplantation?
  • In order to ensure the most success, what particular procedure do you recommend for me to have done?
  • What conferences and symposiums do you attend to stay current?
  • What contact information do you have on file for me? Do you need any other information in order to reach me with updates about my hair transplantation procedure?
  • Are there other physicians in this office with you? And if so, will I have the same physician from the beginning to the end of treatment?
  • What complications could I experience from the procedure?
  • How long did you train with other doctors before you began performing the procedures? (One year would be ideal.)

Following are questions to help guide you as you speak with hair transplant recipients and clinic references:

    1. What specific hair regrowth procedure did the physician use for your hair transplantation?
    2. Are you completely satisfied with the hair transplant results?
    3. What did you like the best about the physician that provided the hair transplant procedure?
    4. Would you return to the physician in the future for further hair transplantation procedures?

  • How To Work With
Hair Regrowth Treatments and Transplant Procedures in Sonoma County

When selecting a hair transplant company in Sonoma County, including the larger cities of Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor, and Healdsburg, cheaper is not necessarily better. If the clinic is more cost-friendly, you will want to take extra precautions to ensure that they are just as qualified as the more expensive clinic.

Be sure to check the credentials of both the clinic and the staff before going ahead with the surgery. Don't be afraid to ask how long they've been in business or how many transplants they have performed. Also, be sure to speak with former clients so that you can see their results. There are clinics available that specialize in affordable hair transplants in order to help those who cannot afford the more expensive clinics. But it's important to be sure you're not sacrificing quality and expertise for a cheaper price.

If you are bothered by hair loss and have been diagnosed as a candidate for hair transplantation surgery, yet you are worried regarding the price, there are a few factors to consider. What are your monthly and yearly costs of prescription or over the counter hair loss treatments? Over the course of a lifetime, they may equal more than the cost of a hair transplant procedure. Remember that a hair transplant procedure is permanent. Furthermore, no maintenance is required.

One way to lower the cost of your hair transplant procedure is to be realistic about your expectations. Though it would be nice to have a full head of hair again as you did in your late teens or early twenties, that might not be realistic. Discuss with your doctor how to achieve a more natural look rather than worry about thickness. This will lower your overall price yet still give you back some of the hair you've lost over the years.

Make Sure Your Sonoma County Hair Transplantation Quote Is Honest
There are a wide range of costs from one hair transplant clinic to another in Sonoma County. So before you quickly choose the cheapest clinic based on the initial quote they give you, make sure that their estimate is really accurate.

First of all, question the hair transplant company regarding the specific number of follicles they are estimating you will need transplanted. The number of follicles used determines the price you will pay.

Lower quotes mean few follicles will be transplanted. So if you are only looking for a minor improvement in the thickness of your hair overall, then a small amount of follicles will be enough. But if you want a noticeable difference, you may want to reconsider. A cheap hair transplant won't actually be a bargain if in the end you are disappointed with the results.

Last of all, you may want to think about whether or not the quote is accurate. Some hair transplant companies will purposefully quote you a much cheaper cost simply to get your business. Once you commit to the procedure, however, the physician may up the overall price by explaining to you how much happier you would be with more follicles.

The most effective course of action when you are looking for a hair transplant company is to discuss your particular goals with the physician and then determine which company will meet those goals for the best price.

The following list is a general overview of popular hair replacement procedures available:

Follicular Unit Grafting
This is the most modern, state-of-the-art hair transplant procedure. Hair grows in follicular units which are groupings of one to three and sometimes four hairs. A typical follicular unit grafting procedure lasts anywhere from three to six hours. (This process is also known as strip excursion.)

If you have an advanced degree of hair loss, a second procedure can follow the original procedure a minimum of five months afterwards.
Hair Loss Medications / Hair Regrowth Medication

Hair plugs and hair transplants are the only way to stop hair loss completely.

Laser Hair Transplants
This refers to a laser being used to make holes or slits for the grafts to be inserted into. The lasers create holes by simply vaporizing tissue. This process must be administered under local anesthesia.

FUE Grafting Procedure / Scarless Hair Grafting
This refers to a procedure of transplanting hairs that doesn’t require an incision. The drawback to this procedure are that in can’t be used with patients that have curly hair, fine hair, or hair of certain color. Secondly, due to a risk of surrounding hair loss, the total number of grafts that can be harvested are limited.

Nonsurgical Hair Replacement
This process if a non-surgical hair replacement technique that involves creating an undetectable matrix of crisscrossing real human hair into the spiraling crown area of your head in a way that makes it practically untraceable.

A: The cost of a hair transplant procedure varies from company to company or physician to physician. Typically the fee is based on a base price plus the number of required grafts, which can vary from patient to patient. Be sure to ask if there are any discount programs available.

Q: Why is there a four- to six-month wait for new hair growth after a transplant or pharmaceutical treatment?
A: Usually it takes an average of four to six months for new hair to grow. This is because the hair follicles have to shift from a resting stage to a growing stage. Also the new hairs have to grow enough to be noticeable.

Q: Are hair transplants permanent?
A: As long as the hair continues to grow in the area from which it was planted the hair transplant will last. Typically the hairs in the back and sides of your head will remain all of your life. But they do tend to thin some. The ideal treatment is to take a medication called Propecia or another similar product. This will help keep the thickness of your hair so that it does not thin out more after the transplant.

Q: Is there a way to prevent or stop hair loss?
A: There are a variety of medications that can prevent hair loss. One of the key methods for these medications to work is to use them consistently.

Q: Is there an alternative to Propecia for preventing hair loss?
A: Many physicians recommend Propecia as it is found to be effective. It is proven to be the best oral medication for hair loss. Like all prescription medications, there are some side effects so they must be taken under a physician’s care. However, the overall safety record of Propecia is very good.

Q: Is there a link between stress and hair loss?
